Local teams announced for I-95 Kickoff Classic

Officials of the Second Annual I-95 Kickoff Classic have announced the local teams that will participate in the Labor Day weekend event: Calvert Hall, Gilman, Loyola, Dunbar, Franklin, Patterson, Archbishop Curley and Mount St. Joseph.

The Classic, which runs the Thursday, Friday and Saturday before Labor Day, will open with Mount St. Joseph facing Friendship Collegiate Sept. 1 at 5:30 p.m. at Bowie State.

That game will be followed by the first game ever played under the lights at Bowie State -- Calvert Hall, The Sun's 2010 No. 1 football team and the defending MIAA A Conference champion, taking on St. John's from Washington 7:30 p.m.

The Classic will continue on Sept. 2 and 3 at Morgan State with games featuring the local Baltimore-area programs playing teams mostly from the Washington area.

On Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m., Gilman will play Oscar Smith, a perennial national power from Virginia Beach. Before that, Franklin, the state Class 3A runner up last fall, will take on Wise, the state Class 4A runner up, at 5 p.m.

On Sept. 3, Patterson will play Archbishop Curley to get things started at 10:45 a.m.
