Chesapeake's Rice wrestles to "greatest moment"
In my zeal to get every local wrestler a mention in yesterday’s blog, I evidently blinked and missed Chesapeake-AA’s Alex Rice, who won the 135-pound class in the 4A/3A competition. I want to thank reader Jeff Eveleth for pointing that out to me.
Rice, a junior, won with a pin in 5:34 and upset No. 1 seed Jordan Tolbert of Magruder.
A brief conversation with Rice after his victory said all that was necessary about how he felt about his victory.
"This is the greatest moment of my life," he said. "I worked so hard."
Rice finished second his freshman year and then had knee surgery. Saturday's night title was the payback for all his work to get back to the top.
He is also Chesapeake's first champ since 2002.
Rice wrapped up his season with a 36-5 record.
