Gilman, Southern coaches nominated for positive coaching awards

Gilman football coach Biff Poggi and Southern cross country coach Douglas Ellmore are among 50 nominees for the Positive Coaching Alliance’s Double-Goal Coach Awards.

Coaches from 43 states were nominated to be one of 20 winners announced later this month. Winners will receive $250 and recognition as positive coaching role models.

The Positive Coaching Alliance is a non-profit organization based at Stanford University in California, which aims “to transform the culture of youth sports to give all young athletes the opportunity for a positive, character-building experience,” according to its web site.

Poggi and Ellmore are among five nominees from Maryland. Also nominated: Jack McGuiness, basketball coach at Little Flower School in Bethesda, Josh Menditch, Calverton Patriots soccer coach, and Kerry Uyak, Damascus Soccer Club coach.
