St. Mary's names new football coach
St. Mary's officials have named Russell Croteau football coach succeeding Brad Best, who resigned in November.
Croteau, a Michigan native who had been an assistant coach at Bladensburg, Oxon Hill and Cambridge-South Dorchester high schools, plans to meet with the Saints Tuesday.
A government and world history teacher at Bladensburg, he coached the team's running backs, but he has also coached wide receivers, quarterbacks and linebackers. He played wide receiver at Bay City Central High School and defensive back at Albion College. He is a graduate of American University.
"I am honored to be asked to lead the program at St.Mary’s, a school that has a long tradition of athletic and academic excellence,” Croteau said in a news release.
Although the Saints finished 3-7 in the MIAA B Conference last fall, they won four league championships under Best and were ranked No. 1 in 1996 after winning the MIAA A Conference title.
