No. 1 Spalding vs. No. 2 Seton Keough girls among prep games postponed

The lingering effects of Wednesday's snow storm have closed most area schools for a third straight day and postponed most athletics contests, including the girls basketball game between No. 1 Archbishop Spalding and No. 2 Seton Keough which will be made up on Sunday.

Schools were closed in Baltimore City and Baltimore, Carroll and Harford counties Friday postponing all events in those jurisdictions and in many private and parochial schools that follow their lead. Seton Keough is closed because it follows Baltimore County's lead.

Spalding will travel to Seton Keough Sunday at 3:30 p.m. for their second meeting of the season after their December game was decided in double overtime. The game is Seton Keough's Playing 4 The Cure breast cancer awareness fundraiser to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Schools in Anne Arundel and Howard counties opened late Friday, so games there will be played as scheduled.

Howard and Glenelg will make up their basketball games postponed from Wednesday on Feb. 7. The girls will play at Glenelg at 5:30 p.m. and the boys, at Howard at 5:30.

Catonsville's girls basketball team has two make-up games rescheduled: Perry Hall at Catonsville, Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and Kenwood at Catonsville, Monday at 5:15.

Gilman's Goodwin selected for USA vs. The World game

Gilman lineman Hunter Goodwin has been selected for the 2011 U.S. Under -19 National Team and will play in the second annual Team USA vs. The World game Wednesday in Austin, Texas.

Goodwin, a 6-foot-6, 285-pound tackle plowed holes for a Gilman offense that scored 311 points more than the opposition last fall as the Greyhounds finished No. 2. He has committed to Wake Forest and plans to sign his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday when the signing period for football opens.

Goodwin said he found out about his selection last night after helping his little brother build a snowman.

“When I came in, I had like three calls and a few texts, one from my coach saying, ‘You’re about to get a good call,’” Goodwin said. “I called one of the numbers back and it was the head of the game, Matt Ferrara. He told me that the Gonzaga (high school) coach had recommended me and they looked at my film and they really like it and basically to come on down.”

Goodwin, 17, is one of 46 players chosen from around the country. He knows only two of his teammates, Gonzaga quarterback Kevin Hogan and St. John’s-DC defensive tackle Kevin McReynolds.

This experience, he said, will build on the ones he took away from playing in the Crab Bowl and the Chesapeake Bowl.

“Both of the all-star games I was in gave me a glimpse of what college is going to be like because you’ve only got the top of the top [players]. Now I’m going to be going against the best and I think it’s really going to help me level out my game, because Gilman’s all running and in a lot of these all-star games, they do a lot more passing. It will give me a chance to work on everything.”

Although high school players are limited by the NCAA to two all-star games, an exemption is granted for the USA vs. The World game in which all of the USA players are high school seniors. The World team includes players from four continents and coaches from Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, France, Japan, Mexico and Sweden.

The game will be played in Austin Westlake Stadium and televised live on Fox College Sports Central. It also will be streamed live at www.HighSchoolSports.net at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Goodwin, who hopes to help the USA take a second victory after winning 17-0 last year, said he is looking forward to the entire experience.

“I’m looking forward to flying down to Austin. I know the quarterback from Gonzage and the D tackle from St. John’s are in it, so I’m looking forward to playing with them. I’ll be able to work with a lot of top guys in our nation and the world. and they’re doing a big signing day thing. We’ll sign in front of all the cameras, so it’s going to be pretty cool.”

Fitzkee, seniors have Bulls girls riding high at 11-1

When Ellen Fitzkee took over the Hereford girls’ basketball program this winter, she knew most of her players were more focused on other sports, but they were athletic and that fit right into the former Towson University coach’s style, emphasizing full-court defense and rebounding.

The combination has the Bulls off to one of the best starts in school history at 11-1.

“Basketball for most of them is not the first sport, but they’re athletes and so they understand competitiveness and they understand grittiness and I think they were always a scrappy-type team, so I’m just taking that and using it on the full court. You can bring defense and you can rebound every night with heart and hustle," Fitzkee said.

Having eight seniors, including seven who return, also has been key, said Fitzkee, who coached the Randallstown girls for three years and took them to the Baltimore County title game in 2007 and 2008.

Although the Bulls fell to Catonsville, 54-43, in the third game of the season, they have beaten some of their toughest rivals in the county’s Class 4A-3A Division, including tight wins over Dulaney, 31-30, and Milford Mill, 50-46 in the last two weeks. Before that, they edged Maryvale, 54-52.

Four seniors start – Marieke Oosterwijk (9.9 points per game), Rebecca Silver (7.2 points), Megan Bell and Michelle Oosterwijk. Their top scorer is a junior, Julia McLaughlin, a 5-foot-11 forward playing center with 12.7 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.7 blocks a game.

The bench also gets a good share of playing time, adding 10.9 points, 9.4 rebounds and 4.8 steals a game.

The statistic that really stands out on the team, however, is steals. The Bulls average 25. Marieke Oosterwijk leads the way, averaging 4.9 while Bell has 4.4 per game. Fitzkee also keeps track of the tips and deflections that lead to steals.

With that swarming defense, Fitzkee said, “the idea is regardless of our shooting percentage – if we just shoot OK – we should win most of the games and that’s really been what’s driven the team.”

The chair of the guidance department at Hereford, Fitzkee moved from Randallstown to Hereford in 2009 but didn’t take over the Bulls program until former coach Dave Schreiner decided not to coach this winter. She coached the last of her 13 seasons at Towson in the winter of 2000-2001, having been named all-conference Coach of the Year twice.

Now, she is preparing the Bulls for a second half that includes a game against No. 12 Woodlawn as well as a rematch with Catonsville.

“We’ll hopefully have more in terms of systems in -- in terms of offense and defense -- toward the end of the year,” Fitzkee said. “Hopefully, players will have developed fundamentally and that’s the other thing we’re working on, getting these players developed fundamentally from top to bottom so that we get better as a team.”

The Bulls next play host to Patapsco on Friday night at 7 p.m. for their annual Think Pink breast cancer awareness and fundraiser night. The teams will wear commemorative shirts and pink shoelaces. Gate receipts will be donated to breast cancer research.

“When I said I was going to be coach back in the fall," Fitzkee said, "the kids came to me and said, ‘This a real important event for us. We’ve done something but it’s not been organized,’ and so Marieke is kind of the organizer with the rest of the seniors. They went out and got sponsors, so we have some corporate sponsors. It’s something the kids really, really wanted to do and they’ve done all the work on it.”

Bel Air joins town rivals Harford Tech and John Carroll at Mount Mat Madness

Harford Tech has been bringing its wrestling team to the Mount Mat Madness tournament even before it was the Mount Mat Madness tournament.

“It used to be the Hammond Tournament, and we came to that,” said Harford Tech coach Gary Siler, who saw his 171-pounder Dillon Brush advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals. “Then it became Mount Mat Madness and we kept coming.”

Crosstown rival John Carroll started to come to the tournament a few years ago, and this year, Bel Air has joined in.

“I think it is exciting for our community to have three teams here,” Bel Air coach Craig Reddish said. “I bet we have more teams here from our little town than any other area.”

Yesterday, the three teams combined to advance seven wrestlers to Saturday’s quarterfinal round, and John Carroll scored well enough to go into today’s matches in eighth place among the 29 competing teams, with Scott Strappelli (119), George Weber (130) and Mathew Miller (171) still in the main draw.

“I’ve heard about this tournament for years,” said Bel Air senior Tom Kuegler (189), who advanced with teammates Steve Cross (140) and Jeff Taylor (112). “A couple of my friends have won it. It’s such a big deal because every match is hard, with tough guys wrestling throughout.”

Reddish said he decided to bring his team because it has had success the past three or four years, including winning a state championship. This season, his team is younger, with three freshmen and four sophomores in the lineup.

“But it doesn’t hurt us to come, and they were excited about it when I suggested it,” Reddish said. “I know being here with nearly 30 teams, all of them top competitors, it could be overwhelming. But it exposes them to be stronger competition, and I think will make them better.”

Kuegler said he and his teammates are young but that they are all hoping “that we can bring home something.”

For Kuegler, that would be a podium finish -- top six among 29 competing teams. He’s a senior with a 16-0 record this season and is hoping that seeing the strong competition at this meet will help him next month at the state tournament, where he finished fourth a year ago.

“Our team won state’s last year,” said Kuegler, who plans to study film in college. “But I’ve had a little chip on my shoulder because I was unhappy with fourth place.

“This year the pressure is off. Why? Mostly because I’ve accepted the idea that if I lose, it’s fine -- as long as I do my very best. My expectations here are that I want to get to the finals, but I’m not going to load myself down with expectations. I’m wrestling one match at a time.”

St. Mary's names new football coach

St. Mary's officials have named Russell Croteau football coach succeeding Brad Best, who resigned in November.

Croteau, a Michigan native who had been an assistant coach at Bladensburg, Oxon Hill and Cambridge-South Dorchester high schools, plans to meet with the Saints Tuesday.

A government and world history teacher at Bladensburg, he coached the team's running backs, but he has also coached wide receivers, quarterbacks and linebackers. He played wide receiver at Bay City Central High School and defensive back at Albion College. He is a graduate of American University.

"I am honored to be asked to lead the program at St.Mary’s, a school that has a long tradition of athletic and academic excellence,” Croteau said in a news release.

Although the Saints finished 3-7 in the MIAA B Conference last fall, they won four league championships under Best and were ranked No. 1 in 1996 after winning the MIAA A Conference title.

The Franklin Indians wrestling team is ready to welcome 16 teams to tomorrow's Invitational Tournament in Reisterstown. And, said coach Mike Slaughter, they're also ready to compete against them better this year than in the past five years.

Centennial's Kraisser, Spalding's Lynch among nationally ranked wrestlers

Moving in to the New Year, Centennial's Nathan Kraisser leads a very short list of local state wrestlers in the national rankings set fourth by InterMatwrestling.com and theopenmat.com

Kraisser, a junior, is ranked No. 15 in the 125-pound class by InterMat and No. 8 by theopenmat. Meanwhile, Charlie Lynch, who wrestles at 145 for No. 1 Archbishop Spalding, is at No. 16 on the InterMat site and No. 13 on theopenmat.

For Kraisser, it has been business as usual. The junior went into this season with a 75-3 record and two state titles, and now has 10 more wins and no additional losses. Of those 10 wins, nine of them have come on pins. The one that wasn't was a 1-0 decision in the championship match at the War On the Shore.

All of this season's achievements have come despite moving up two weight classes to 125. Centennial coach Dave Roogow said Kraisser is likely to stay at the higher weight most of the season, though he could wrestle at 119 next weekend at the Mount Mat Madness tournament held at Catonsville Community College.

Out of the local area, Lex Ozias of Southern Garrett is nationally ranked at No. 6 at 145 by InterMat and No. 7 by theopenmat, while Good Counsel's Kyle Snyder is InterMat's No. 15 wrestler at the 215-pound class, and theopenmat's No. 14 wrestler.

St. Frances boys hoops rested and ready

While most of the top boys basketball teams were traveling to the various holiday tournaments, No. 1 St. Frances (7-0) took a low-key approach the past two weeks.

Since an 81-66 win over D.C.-based Friendship Academy on Dec. 20, the Panthers only time with the basketball has been among themselves at practice.

Talking with senior standouts Greg Lewis and R.J. Williams late last week, the team is chomping at the bit to get back on the floor. Coach Mark Karcher planned it that way.

"I want them rested and hungry," he said, looking ahead to the rest of the demanding season competing in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference and the Baltimore Catholic League.

The Panthers and their No. 1 ranking will be tested immediately this week. On Tuesday, they travel to No. 3 Mount St. Joseph (12-3) for a 7 p.m. start before visiting No. 6 John Carroll (16-1) at 7:15 Friday night.

The Gaels, led by Trey Clinton, David Windsor and Brian Morton, went 2-1 in Virginia last week at the Benedictine Capital City Classic.

John Carroll traveled to New York last week and went 2-1 at the Stop DWI Holiday Classic. The Patriots, who have been led by guards Malcolm McMillan and Ronald Scott, came away with two wins before losing their first game of the season, 49-48, to New York's Thomas Jefferson on Thursday.
