Atholton's Schmitt named Ravens Coach of the Week

For guiding Atholton to a stunning upset of No. 3 River Hill on Friday, Raiders coach Kyle Schmitt has been named the Ravens High School Coach of the Week.

Atholton's 10-0 win snapped a 49-game winning streak for River Hill in Howard County play. The victory for the Raiders broke a 13-game losing streak to the Hawks, including a loss in last year's regional championship game.

“It was a tremendous win,” Schmitt said, “not only because of who we beat or the streaks we broke, but because of where we were in the season. It puts us right back in the middle of it.”

Atholton was 2-2 heading into Friday's matchup with River Hill, fresh off a loss to Howard. The Raiders jumped out to a 7-0 lead when quarterback Bryan McMahon scrambled for a 6-yard score. Brett Hass extended Atholton's lead to 10-0 with his 25-yard field with 15 seconds remaining in the first half. The Atholton defense stood strong by forcing three turnovers.

“Our defensive coordinator Jared Albert put together an incredible game plan,” Schmitt said. “Our kids tackled extremely well. River Hill is very sound schematically, so you have to make tackles and make plays when you have the opportunity, and that’s what they did.”

Schmitt, who was named the Ravens High School Coach of the Week last year after Atholton's 34-30 win over Wilde Lake in Week 3, will be honored along with this season's other winners during the Ravens-Saints game at M&T Bank Stadium on Dec. 19. Previous honorees this season are Hereford's Steve Turnbaugh, Gilman's Biff Poggi and the Howard coaching staff.
