Severna Park coach Shelton stokes fire

No. 3 Glenelg (14-1) did what no other team outside of Anne Arundel County had done in six years Monday night when it upset No. 1 Severna Park, 2-1.

After the game Glenelg players voiced the expected excitement over the victory. And Severna Park players, who had completed the regular season without a loss and now go into the postseason with a 13-1-1 record, voiced admiration for the strength of the Glenelg effort.

But Severna Park coach Lil Shelton sounded disdainful in her remarks to reporter Mike Peters of the Annapolis Capital, and may have given the Glenelg Gladiators bulletin board material for the post season. Or did she?

"This is just a tune-up for the states," Falcons coach Lil Shelton said. "That's what I just emphasized. I said, 'This is just an insignificant game. It's nice to win: Whoopee. We're better than Howard County.' But that's all it's good for, really, and another feather in our hat. But who needs feathers? I told the girls, 'We don't have room for that trophy in our trophy case anyway.'"

When the MPSSAA playoffs begin today, Severna Park will be going for its sixth straight Class 4A state title. Shelton might have felt safe in saying what she did. She may have just wanted to charge up her own team, given the Falcons won't see Glenelg in the postseason. The Gladiators play in Class 2A. But they may be a little more inspired anyway.
