Motocross event is a mix of entertainment and athleticism

If you have never been to a motocross race before, you need to go.

I traveled down to Budds Creek Saturday to see a stop on the Lucas Oil American Motorcycle Association Pro Motocross Championship and left a fan of a sport that I never had much interest in.

Sure, I’ve taken short looks at races on TV before. But there’s a big difference between watching one of these races on TV and witnessing the excitement in person, feeling the motor’s roar and sharing in the thrill that is motocross racing.

For those who are unaware, motocross is nothing like NASCAR, where the riders go in a loop for hours on end. On motocross tracks, you have to turn both left and right, and races last 30 minutes. Jumps are also laced throughout the course, increasing the chances of wrecks and giving a thrill to viewers as they see their favorite riders soar through the air.

In the weeks leading up to the event, I’d been told how the view of the course was second-to-none. My trip to Mechanicsville confirmed that. I walked around the whole track and couldn’t find a bad spot to watch the race. There were a few blind spots, but the racers were only out of sight for a few seconds before they sped around the corner into the next jump.

Track owner and race promoter Jonathan Beasley was ecstatic during the races. At the beginning of the second race of the day, the 250cc, he leaned over to me and said “I’ve been working my whole life for these 30 minutes. I’m going to enjoy it.” And enjoy it he did, along with the thousands of fans that covered the grass surrounding the track.

Racers came from all over the world, some as young as 16, and show they are world-class athletes. The temperature was in the low 90s, and driving on bikes under the hot sun is no joke. Unfortunately, I had to leave before the final race (can’t skip out on the Stevens’ Father’s Day party), but I only had to see a few races to be pulled in.

Oh yeah, and the race-day models were there in full force, making every minute of the one-and-a-half hour drive worth it.

Loyola's Lardo to play in Tournament of Stars

Lardo, a rising senior at Loyola, will be the lone Marylander to participate in this week's USA Baseball Tournament of Stars, an annual event showcasing 128 of the nation's top players under the age of 18. The tournament, sponsored by Major League Baseball, is used to select the U-18 national team, representing the U.S. in international competition.

Lardo, a fleet outfielder, batted .438 with seven doubles, five triples, three homers and 32 stolen bases for the Dons this season. He will suit up for the American Legion team, which features players from more than a dozen states.

The tournament runs Wednesday through Sunday in Cary, N.C.

Broadneck grad Salvarola makes U.S. junior softball team

Recent Broadneck grad Kourtney Salvarola, who led the No. 1 Bruins to their second straight Class 4A state softball title, has been selected for the 2010-11 USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team.

The team will compete later this year at the III Pan American Softball Championship (18-and-under), Aug. 6-15, in Bogota, Colombia, which serves as a qualifier for the International Softball Federation (ISF) IX Jr. Women's World Championship (19-and-under), Dec. 6-17, 2011, in Cape Town, South Africa.

Salvarola, who will play at South Florida, was a four-time first-team All-Metro pitcher, earning Player of the Year honors in her junior season. She batted .514 and went 14-2 on the mound this season to close out her stellar four-year career. Ranked the No. 5 recruit by ESPNU, Salvarola will likely play an infield position at South Florida.

Gilman's Poggi disappointed football merger off the table

Gilman football coach Biff Poggi said Thursday he was disappointed that the possibility of a football merger between the MIAA and Washington Catholic Athletic Conference is off the table.

Poggi said Gilman supported the merger, which had been in an exploratory phase since December. However, talks with the WCAC will not be continued after the merger failed to receive unanimous support from A Conference programs at this week's annual MIAA athletic directors' workshop, according to Rick Diggs, MIAA executive director.

For Poggi, whose team already has WCAC powers Good Counsel and DeMatha on its non-league schedule for fall, adding more competitive teams to the six-team A Conference was the big draw.

"We're just never going to get to a critical mass in the A Conference with the schools we have now and this was a really good reason to get it done," Poggi said. " I'm disappointed that whatever administrative or structural or political things that needed to be taken care of couldn't be taken care of. I don't know any of the facts. I don't know who said what, but I know at Gilman, we were a big supporter of it. It's too bad because I think it would have been one of the great high school football leagues in the country."

Scheduling is a difficulty the A Conference has struggled with because it is so small. Teams have to go outside the conference to fill half of their 10-game schedules.

"For Gilman, we're already playing the WCAC's top teams and for us it's a good fit," Poggi said. "The football is competitive and our record against DeMatha is 4-5 over the last nine years. And it's so hard to get games. I think it would be neat to have the leagues together and have a North Division and a South Division and have a playoff and a championship game. That's what I was hoping we were going to do."

Instead, the Greyhounds will play non-league games against Good Counsel, DeMatha, Archbishop Spalding, Malvern Prep from Philadelphia and Don Bosco Prep from New Jersey — last season's No. 1 team in USA Today as well as MaxPreps and Rivals Top 100 — in a game to be played at Morgan State.

No other team has so ambitious a schedule and Poggi said he isn't sure everyone wants one.

"Quite frankly, I think a lot of the coaches, they don't want to play DeMatha and Good Counsel and I think that we need to be playing them," Poggi said.

Without the merger, Poggi said teams will have to continue to travel to get such high-caliber competition. In recent years, the Greyhounds have traveled to northern New Jersey, New York City and Philadelphia to play strong opponents.

"Travel is becoming more a part of it now and it makes it a lot harder," Poggi said. "A 40-minute trip down the highway to WCAC land is a lot better than what we've had to do."

MIAA says no to football merger with WCAC

Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association officials have opted not to pursue a merger with the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference that would have created an exceptionally strong football conference including the top private and parochial school programs in the Baltimore-Washington area.

Rick Diggs, executive director of the MIAA, said Thursday morning that the decision was made during the annual MIAA athletic directors' three-day workshop.

"We just decided at our meeting yesterday that we're not going to pursue the merger any longer," Diggs said. "No particular reasons other than we didn't have full support from all the A Conference schools. We decided if we had full support from all of our schools that we would pursue it, but there were some questions."

In December, MIAA officials met with WCAC officials to pursue the possibility of a merger for football only. Such a merger would bring Gilman, Loyola, McDonogh, Calvert Hall, Mount St. Joseph and Georgetown Prep into one league with such programs as Good Counsel, DeMatha, Gonzaga, St. John's and Bishop McNamara. Plans called for a league championship game which the MIAA A Conference currently does not have as it crowns its regular-season champion.

Crossover between the two leagues would have been nothing new. Defending MIAA champion Gilman and DeMatha have a long-standing rivalry and the Greyhounds also played WCAC champ Good Counsel last season as did Mount St. Joseph. Calvert Hall played St. John's last fall.

Diggs did not elaborate on the specifics of the sticking points in voting down the possibility of a merger other than scheduling and maintaining the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Bowl between Calvert Hall and Loyola.

"There would have been some difficulties to overcome like scheduling, how we would have split the divisions. There's always other things not worth talking about," Diggs said.

As for the Calvert Hall-Loyola game, plans for a conference championship would have made that game difficult to continue, because it is so late in November. Diggs said in January that some heads of MIAA schools did not want to continue playing football into December, because many athletes play two sports and playing that late would overlap basketball practice by six weeks.

With only six teams in the A Conference, scheduling has been an issue and Diggs said perhaps one or more teams would eventually move up from the B Conference. Last fall, B Conference champion Archbishop Spalding defeated Calvert Hall during the regular season.

No changes can be made for this fall, however, because the MIAA sets its conferences for two years and 2010-11 is the second year of that cycle. Any changes would have to wait until the 2011-12 school year.

"We know we have to strengthen our schedule and that's going to be up to our competition committee to look at it after next year and see how we can strengthen the A Conference," Diggs said. "We have to look at whether one or two schools need to go up and play in the A Conference. Any change would be for the 11-12 season. That would be up to the principals and athletic directors, They have to take a look at it and see what's best."

Spalding seeks a new boys lacrosse coach

Archbishop Spalding High School is accepting applications for the position of head boy's varsity lacrosse coach.

The new coach will replace Zack Burke, who recently stepped down after three seasons. Burke is moving to California with his family.

All interested candidates should submit a cover letter and resume of experience to Archbishop Spalding athletic director Lee Dove at dovel@archbishopspalding.org, or via fax to 410-969-2795 or mailed to Archbishop Spalding High School, 8080 New Cut Road, Severn, Maryland 21144.

A minimum of high school coaching experience is required for consideration.

Burke led the Cavaliers to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference playoffs in two of the three years he was coach. He earned All-Metro Coach of the Year honors in 2008 when he giuded the team to their first playoff appearance since the program joined the A Conference in 2003.

McDonogh's Meurer wins Kelly Award

McDonogh senior defenseman Joe Meurer was the recipient of the C. Markland Kelly Award, which recognizes the top boys lacrosse player in the state.

Meurer, who is set to play at Ohio State next year, was a dominating presence on defense for the Eagles, who advanced to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference semifinals. He finished the season with 104 ground balls and also contributed five goals and two assists.

Meurer also has been named to the All-Tewaaraton Team and is an Under Armour and U.S. Lacrosse All-American.

"He's just worked extremely hard in the weight room and with his stick skills to become a dynamic lacrosse player. He always impacts the game and is highly respected not only in our league, but the entire country," McDonogh coach Andy Hilgartner said.

Meurer was named the Kelly Award winner at the annual dinner Sunday night in Annapolis.

Remembering Western's Dave Lang

Everyone who knew Dave Lang, the Western athletic director who died suddenly over Memorial Day weekend, certainly feels a sense of shock and loss this week.

Many will gather at the Ruck Funeral Home in Towson to visit his wife Sharon and son Jonathan and to remember Dave from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. His funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Cockeysville.

I didn’t know Lang that well, just from doing my job. That's how my colleague Mike Frainie knew him, too, and we want to share a few of our own memories about one of the true nice guys in our high school sports universe. Mike's thoughts follow mine.

The media covering high school sports can be a handful sometimes, especially because high school athletics departments are not set up to deal with the media as college programs are. A lot falls on the athletic director and Dave always seemed happy to help out.

And he had to help out reporters around here quite often. Western had a lot of good teams during the 10 years he spent there. The basketball and track teams were regular regional and state-title contenders. Those two and every other team had their share — some would say more than their share — of city championships.

Whenever I called him, he always had an answer for me or he knew where I could get one. Sitting in his office with him while writing a basketball story after a tournamnt — as people came, asked questions, got answers and left, Dave always had a few funny lines. He just always seemed upbeat — harried sometimes but still smiling.

That’s not easy because an athletic director's job is something like juggling 10 balls while riding a unicycle as fast as you can through an obstacle course. You’ve got to balance things at top speed and deal with the hourly crises that pop up in your path. He did those things and more.

Bob Wade, Dave's boss as coordinator of athletics for the Baltimore City Public Schools, told me Wednesday he had been talking with Western principal Eleanor Matthews on Tuesday when she suddenly said she had to get going. She had to cover Dave’s cafeteria duty.

Dave Lang was one of those people you relied on more than you realized. He was someone you looked forward to seeing more than you realized. He was just a nice guy in a world that seems to have fewer and fewer nice guys all the time. I will miss him every minute I spend at Western High School.

From Mike Frainie:
In my job as a freelance reporter, I often get assignments on very short notice. I could be in Harford County covering a wrestling match one day, and in Baltimore City covering a basketball game the next.

As much as I try to find information on the teams I cover, sometimes it’s not easy. Dave was always a great source of information, and a great help. Half the battle when I do a high school preview capsule is getting information. It can be a real challenge. He was always reachable, which is very important when you’re on a deadline. He would either get me the information I was asking for, or give me a source that would help me.

He always seemed very interested in me as a person, and my job as a freelancer. I found this interesting because he was such a trailblazer. It took a special person to be a male athletic director at a public all-girls school. I always thought he handled it with such grace and class.

Teachers and Administrators, in my opinion, are supposed to serve as good examples for young kids. The Dave I knew never fell short in that category. He will be missed.

Jacobs, Tabor share honor at Havre de Grace

Havre de Grace seniors David Jacobs and Zack Tabor, team captains on the baseball team and three-sport athletes, will share the honor of class valedictorian after each finished their academic careers with identical 4.31 grade-point averages.

Jacobs entered the final quarter with a 4.25 GPA, while Tabor was just behind with a 4.23. Jacobs is set to attend Arcadia with hopes of playing soccer and baseball, while Tabor moves on to play football at Penn. Graduation at Havre de Grace is set for today.

"It almost seems fitting that they tied. It's really the perfect way to honor and conclude the high school careers of two student-athletes I'm privileged to have simply met, let alone coached," Havre de Grace baseball coach Sean Welsh said.

Hammond's Clark named Maryland's Gatorade Player of the Year

Gatorade on Wednesday named Hammond senior Travis Clark its 2010 Maryland Baseball Player of the Year.

The third baseman had a monster year for the No. 3 Bears (21-3), batting .456 with eight home runs, 35 RBIs and an .897 slugging percentage. He reached base via a hit or walk in every game this season.

Clark, who will continue his career at the University of South Carolina-Aiken, also was a top pitcher, posting a 5-0 record with one save, and a 1.98 ERA. He struck out 32 in 28.1 innings.
He maintains a weighted 3.07 GPA and volunteers locally as a summer youth baseball coach.

The award recognizes not only athletic achievement, but also academics and character on and off the field. Clark is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year award, to be announced later this month.
