Chesapeake Charge ready to roll (updated)
The Chesapeake Charge will begin its inaugural season in the Women's Premier Soccer League when it hosts the Jersey Select at 7 p.m. May 22 at Arundel High's Carroll Field
The Charge, coached by Albert Oni, will play a 10-game regular season competing in the Eastern Conference's Southern Division. The team had been set to open the season Saturday on the road against the Philadelphia Independence, but the game was postponed because of a personal issue with the Philadelphia team.
The Charge has an impressive collection of former area high school standouts who are in the midst of or have completed stellar college careers as well. Included on the roster are former All-Metro standouts Kelly Hammond (St. Mary's), Erica Page (Archbishop Spalding), Jen Biscoe (John Carroll), Jessica Knight (Perry Hall), Annesia Faulkner (St. Vincent Pallotti), Gigi Mangione (McDonogh), Ashly Kennedy (St. Mary's) and Brittany Tegeler (McDonogh).
The WPSL, which features 56 teams and was founded in 1998, is an independent national league whose main focus is the development of highly competitive amateur women's soccer.
