Henry ready for Gaels football

As soon as Blake Henry took a job as an assistant football coach at Loyola, he knew he wanted to be a head coach in the MIAA A Conference.

Henry played for the Dons and spent five years as a Dons assistant, but Friday he realized his dream. He was named head football coach at Mount St. Joseph.

“It’s familiar because it’s the conference I played in growing up, so I know the level of competition. In my opinion it’s the toughest league in the state. I enjoy the rivalries between all the schools, how well they know each other and for the A Conference, there are no playoffs so there’s so much emphasis on each regular-season game. There’s a championship mentality for every game you play in,” said Henry, 30.

Henry graduated from Loyola in 1998 and went to Northwestern on a football scholarship. He transferred to Wake Forest, where he was a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference offensive guard as a senior. He had a brief stint with the Atlanta Falcons after signing a free-agent contract and joined Loyola’s staff in 2003.

Gaels athletic director Paul Triplett said Henry was chosen from among 45 applicants for the job. Nine candidates were interviewed and he was the top choice of the selection committee.

“His background, obviously his familiarity with the A Conference and our league, I think that always helps,” Triplett said. “His football background and the success he’s had as he’s been working his way up through the ranks over at Loyola.”

Henry will continue to teach at Loyola the rest of this school year, but he will teach religion at St. Joe beginning in the fall.

Friday afternoon, Henry was introduced to the players, some of whom have come off a disappointing injury-riddled 2-8 varsity season.

“Last year was a tough year for them,” Henry said, “but the year before that, they were the second-best team in the league and the year before that they tied for the championship. I had a meeting with the players [Friday] and they definitely had a lot of guys that passed the eye test -- any football coach knows sometimes you can look at a guy and see he’s a football player as far as build. You’ve got 100 guys in the room today between grades 9 and 11. That’s a lot of football players. The interest is still very high at St. Joe, but the challenge is to getting a new offense and a new defense in in time for the first game.”

Henry will begin overseeing weight room workouts after spring break. He is about two weeks away from finalizing his staff, which will include some current St. Joe coaches and some new ones. On the field, he said, he likely will have a defensive coordinator but call the offensive plays himself.

It’s no surprise to him that expectations will be high. They are for all A Conference football programs, but his personal expectations are just as high.

“Every year my expectation is to be in the hunt for the championship. It’s a diverse school in a variety of different ways. There’s 1,100 boys. It’s a school that doesn’t have a lot of competition as far as other Catholic schools near it, especially in the A conference. It should be a challenge to win every year, but I expect to contend every year for it.

“The biggest challenge, I think, coaching in the A Conference is the head coaches are all the top level of high school coaches. We all know each other and our systems. Everyone has four or five or six games that they scouted on each team, so by the time you play a conference opponent, they know your offense and defense almost as well as you do. That’s the big challenge, to win those conference games consistently because we’re all so familiar with each other. It becomes like a chess match.”

Henry said he brings a philosophy based on accountability and he let the players know that right away.

“I told them [Friday] I’m going to hold them accountable in the classroom and on the field and in the weight room and the coaches are going to do the same, but most importantly they’re going to hold each other accountable, do the work together. I told them my hope for them was not to let each other slack, to be competing at all levels while they’re in high school.”

Barton featured on MaxPreps

Former Lake Clifton basketball standout Will Barton, who is now attending Brewster Academy in Massachusetts before moving on to Memphis in the college ranks next year, was featured late last week on MaxPreps.com.

The high school sports Web site is counting down the Top 10 newcomers who will make the biggest impact in next year's NCAA men's basketball tournament, and Barton ranks seventh.

After leading the Lakers to a 28-0 season and earning All-Metro Player of the Year honors last year, the 6-foot-6 guard/forward moved on to Brewster Academy in New Hampshire and averaged 20 points this season.

Local runners fare well at national track championships

Several local athletes found success at two national indoor track meets last week in Boston and New York.

First, at the Nike Indoor National Meet in Boston, Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland team champion McDonogh did very well. The group of Kristen Brown, Jessica Caldwell, Jasmine Robinson and Autumne Franklin combined to finish first in the hurdle relay to win an indoor national championship.

McDonogh coach Jeff Sanborn said that the Eagles' winning time of 33.42 seconds ranks in the Top 10 of times ever run and gave them a victory margin of 1.24 seconds over a team from New Rochelle, N.Y.

An hour later, Brown and Robinson combined with Jordyn Glaser and Madeline Dulac to finish in seventh place in the sprint medley. They ended up .24 of a second out of sixth place -- which would have earned them All-American status.

Caldwell also finished third in the triple jump, and Brown took sixth in the 60-meter high hurdles while Justin Gross was third in the long jump. Each got All-American honors.

Tommy Butler of Francis Scott Key also had a big weekend. The Class 2A state champion in the high jump got a personal best of 6 feet, 8.25 inches, earning him third place and All-American honors.

He actually tied Tanner Anderson for second place. But since Anderson cleared it on his first jump and Butler did it on his last, the tie-breaker for second went to Anderson.

Archbishop Curley freshman Kyle Hunt won his heat of the freshman 400 in 54.08 and finished sixth overall to also get All-American status.

Kikanae Punyua of Wilde Lake continued his storybook season by running a personal best at the National Scholastic Indoor championships in New York. The Kenyan, who just took up running six months ago, ran 9:16 to earn All-American status there.

That was 20 seconds better than Punyua had ever run before.

The Next Level - men's hoops roundup for March 15

Men’s basketball has wrapped up conference tournament play, and that means the end of the season for some of our local players. For those fortunate enough to continue their seasons, it’s on to the Big Dance (or one of the other three national postseason tournaments).

This week’s top five features many of the usual suspects. Massachusetts’ Ricky Harris (Calvert Hall) averaged 21.5 points and 3.5 rebounds over two games. Morgan State’s Reggie Holmes (St. Frances) and Kevin Thompson (Walbrook) both scored 15.0 points per game over three contests. Holmes added averages of 5.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists¸ and Thompson also contributed 11.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocks. New Mexico State’s Jahmar Young (Du Bois) averaged 17.0 points and 4.7 assists in three games. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Kevin Palmer (Parkville) put up 20.5 points per game, 7.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists in a pair of contests.

Holmes, Thompson and Young deserve special recognition for helping to lead their teams to conference tournament championships and NCAA tournament berths.

Young was particularly impressive, scoring in the lane with 3.8 seconds remaining to put the Aggies on the top in their Western Athletic Conference semifinal meeting with Nevada, and then making back-to-back baskets to spark a late 14-4 run in the final, lifting New Mexico State to a come-from-behind victory over Utah State, which had won its past 17 games. Young was named Most Valuable Player of the WAC tournament.

Thompson garnered Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament MVP honors.

The rest of the roundup follows.

Fallston win keeps Hannahs' title streak alive

When Fallston's girls basketball team won its state semifinal game Friday night, it kept a unique streak alive for one of its players.

The last three teams that senior McKenzie Hannahs has played -- and started on -- have won state championships: Basketball, lacrosse and soccer. In more than 20 years of covering high school sports in the Baltimore area, I have never heard of a streak like that.

Although it probably happens in cross country and track, it has to be extremely rare in three different team-only sports. Most high school athletes are fortunate to win one state title in their four years, much less three in three seasons. Think of how many never even get to a state tournament.

"I am spoiled, really spoiled," said Hannahs, with a laugh after the unranked Cougars upset No. 3 Digital Harbor, 42-31, in Friday's state Class 2A semifinal.

"I'm just honored to have all these titles and, hopefully, another title [Saturday]. I'm blessed with so many good athletes that go to my school. It's just awesome. I'm going to look back on it all the time and tell my kids. I'm just blessed.

"We have some great coaches who support us and all the girls, we have a great time. Every team I play with, we all have fun and then [late coach Vern] Brown was a big part of it, so we love to do it for him all the time," said Hannahs, referring to the former Cougars soccer and basketball coach who died in November.

"It's been fun. I love all my teammates and I love all my sports," said Hannahs, who played every minute of Friday's game and had four points, six rebounds, two steals and a block in a strong team effort.

Arundel girls: No 'boo-boo faces' wanted

For the last two years, the season ended earlier in the state tournament than the Arundel girls basketball team would have liked. That made for some emotional press conferences after the games, especially last season when the Wildcats lost in the semifinal.

Thursday night after the Wildcats defeated Urbana, 52-42, in a state Class 4A semifinal, it was easy to joke about those disappointing moments.

"It is a lot different sitting at this table," senior guard Talen Watson said. "What they call it is the boo-boo face and my tears were rolling down here and I had to keep composure, but it feels so much different. To make it to this point past that point from what we did last year is a great thing. We'll celebrate tonight but then on Friday we have practice and we'll go in and we'll be be focused. We don't want to have the boo-boo faces again."

Wildcats coach Lee Rogers said assistant coach Paul Moore got copies of pictures from the past two press conferences, including 2008 when they lost in the championship game, and showed them to the girls earlier this week.

"That showed those guys when they had those tears and they didn't like that feeling," said Rogers while sitting with seniors Watson, Sheronne Vails and Ariel Ross at the press conference after Thursday's game.

"We put [those photos] in the locker room. We discussed about the pressure and [how] we don't want this. These are things that you guys have experienced that those younger guys haven't, so in order to not have those (feelings) we've got to stay focused and work hard and you can't give up and we talked about how they won't quit."

The No. 5 Wildcats (22-4) aren't about to let down now. They have one opponent to get past in Saturday's 3 p.m. title game at UMBC's RAC Arena -- and it's not an easy one.

Gaithersburg (23-3) upset Wise, the No. 2 team behind Riverdale Baptist in The Washington Post rankings whose only previous loss had been to Riverdale. Gaithersburg prevailed 46-44 in overtime despite trailing by 16 in the second quarter, turning the ball over 31 times and having two of their three ball handlers foul out in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats know how tough Wise is -- they played the Pumas in a holiday tournament in December and they gave them a battle before falling 63-59, so they know they will have to work awfully hard to hold off those boo-boo faces.

Seton Keough 40, Elizabeth Seton 36
Spalding 61, St. John's-DC 45

Hereford's unusual Gload gives up cell phone for Lent

Hereford wrestler Taylor Gload, who earned Baltimore Sun Boys Athlete of the Week honors yesterday for his performance at the Maryland Public Secondary Schools state wrestling tournament last weekend, is different in ways you'd never expect.

Gload, who wrestles at around 198 pounds, won the heavyweight (285-pound) class.

Unusual enough. He was undefeated in that weight class for two full seasons (42-0), which is very unusual. His only loss came in the 215-pound class, which should be his normal weight class. Distinctive.

And the senior has unusual determination to stay with difficult things. To get stronger for wrestling and football -- he's a defensive end for the Bulls -- he goes to the gym and lifts weights relentlessly. He bench presses 280 pounds, squat lifts 450, power cleans 270 and dead lifts nearly three-times his weight -- 530 pounds.

But perhaps the most unusual thing about him is not his strength, but his strength of character. Wrestlers as a group are strong-willed. But when a teenager says he is going to give up his cell phone -- and that means the texting that goes with it -- for Lent and then does it, well, that might go beyond unusual.

Lent is a 40-day period from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. In 40 days, my stepson could send and receive nearly 20,000 messages, and he's not unusual among his friends. He would be if he gave up his cell, which isn't going to happen.

Why did Gload decide to do it?

"One of my friends on the wrestling team who had been having a really good season gave up soda for Lent," Gload said. "But at the regional tournament, he forgot and drank a soda. Then he failed to qualify for states. Seeing that, I just decided I should give up something and stick with it."

So far, the results have been great. He pinned his state final opponent in 3:11 to win the one and only state crown of his career.

"It was a big deal," Gload said of winning the title (not giving up the cell). "It was like the culmination. It meant I ended my high school heavyweight career undefeated, set the school record for wins in a season [41] and reached the goal of winning a championship.

"I didn't show much emotion when I won during the season because I was always thinking about the next match. But I was emotional after the championship win because it was the last one. There was nothing more to think about."

St. Frances, SK and Spalding headed to Bishop Walsh

The area's top three Catholic school girls basketball teams are headed to Cumberland for the 16th Annual Bishop Walsh Girls Invitational Tournament, which begins Thursday.

Seton Keough won the tournament last season, 55-43, over Elizabeth Seton, its first-round opponent this time. St. Frances took the consolation game.

Games begin with Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference champ and No. 1 St. Frances (22-3) taking on the host school, Bishop Walsh (5-17) at 3:15 p.m. No. 6 Seton Keough (14-10) and Elizabeth Seton, the Washington area's top team in the tournament, meet at 4:45. The Roadrunners (22-6) are the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference champions and are ranked No. 6 in The Washington Post.

The other half of the bracket features No. 2 Spalding (21-5) taking on St. John's (23-6), the No. 7-ranked team in The Post at 6:15. Bishop McNamara (16-14), The Post's No. 12 team, plays first-time participant Springside, of Philadelphia, (14-11) at 8 p.m.

Games begin at 2:45 on Friday with the championship game tipping off at 6:15 Saturday night.

Record-setting feat for Western hoops

When Western's girls basketball team won its regional championship Friday, the Doves earned their 14th trip to the state tournament -- a new state record.

The Doves had shared the top spot at 13 with Southern-AA and Paint Branch, but neither of those teams were able to get out of their regions this time.

That accomplishment by the Western program is even more remarkable considering that the Doves have made all 14 appearances since 1993, the first year the Baltimore City schools played for state titles. Southern and Paint Branch qualified for states for the first time in 1979 -- a 15-year head start.

Now, the Doves will get to work trying to catch up to those two in number of state championships. Southern has five and Paint Branch, four. The state record is seven held by Mount Hebron and DuVal.

The Doves will be going for state title No. 3 and their first since 1995 when they meet Centennial in the semifinals Thursday at 9 p.m. at UMBC's RAC Arena.

AACS, Key School raise $12,000 for breast cancer research

Annapolis Area Christian School and The Key School, two of the area's smallest schools, joined forced earlier this year to raise money for breast cancer research and their "Pink Out" event brought in more than $12,000.

Here is the news release sent out Tuesday by the schools:

Officials at Annapolis Area Christian School (AACS) and The Key School announced today that their recent joint fundraising effort raised $12,189 for the fight against breast cancer. The schools joined forces in a competitive basketball tournament, themed “Pink Out”, to celebrate breast cancer survivors and to donate funds to further research for a cure.

Both boys’ and girls’ junior varsity and varsity teams participated in the tournament and in gaining support for the January 29 event at the Kilby Athletic Center on the AACS Upper School campus. The fundraising effort was driven by three major components: Selling tickets to the Pink Out games, selling Pink Out t-shirts, and raising money via free-throw sponsorships. Fans in the bleachers showed team spirit and support for breast cancer awareness by wearing Pink Out t-shirts designed by team captains from each school and pre-sold through the school communities.

“This event truly demonstrated the hearts of our community. For two schools to come together, drawn by an idea created by an AACS alum Grace Mercer, t-shirts that were designed by current team captains, and bleachers filled to capacity by students, parents and faculty, it is a remarkable statement and a blessing for all,” said AACS basketball coach and event organizer Mr. Jim Domoracki. “We are thrilled that our community could make such an impact on this great cause and we are honored to have the AAMC here in Annapolis to lead efforts for a cure,” he added.

At halftime during the girls’ varsity game, more than ten breast cancer survivors stood to be recognized and autographed the tournament’s pink basketball. Dr. Barry R. Meisenberg, director of the DeCesaris Cancer Institute at Anne Arundel Medical Center, also addressed the crowd.

“We at the DeCesaris are truly grateful for the outpouring of support displayed by the AACS and Key School community,” Dr. Meisenberg said. “The support is gratifying to the men and women who work in the Cancer Center to care for your neighbors. I am particularly impressed by the ability of these young people to look beyond their own needs and to consider that there are others in the community who are in great need. The money donated from this effort will go directly to our 'area of special needs' to cover services such as transportation, and treatments for those who cannot afford them.”

“This event exceeded all of our expectations and our original goal of $10,000,” said Key School Athletic Director Brian Boyd. “It was amazing to see not only the teams get so involved, but both communities in their entirety embrace the cause and show incredible enthusiasm. Seeing the crowd of pink, white and black t-shirts was inspiring for all of us.”

Milford Mill's McCray a go for states

Milford Mill standout junior forward Isaiah McCray, who left the Millers' Class 3A North championship win with a back injury on Saturday, is expected to play when the team takes on Stephen Decatur in Thursday's 5 p.m. state semifinal at the Comcast Center.

McCray, the team's leading scorer, suffered back spasms when he collided with Parkville's James Milton in the third quarter of the Millers' 73-64 win.

The Millers (23-3) will be making their first trip to the state tournament in 13 years in a bid to capture the program's fourth state title.

Changes coming to football Scholar Athlete Award

Wednesday’s Scholar Athlete Awards Dinner, which features scholarships presented to area high school football players, will have a slightly different format this year. Instead of five regional awards and one larger overall award, only regional awards will be presented.

“Basically, we’re trying to spread out more money to the kids more equally,” said Ken Mills, dinner chairman. “We found generally that it is tough picking one grand-prize winner. We’ve had ties in the past, but it was just the feeling that it would be a better idea to spread the money around a little wider, more equitably. Tough economic times and all of that.”

This is the 47th year the Greater Baltimore Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame has sponsored the dinner at Martin’s West. Football players from Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Harford and Howard counties will be honored. The five winners, chosen from 88 nominees will share in $20,000 worth of scholarship money.

In addition to the scholarships, each of the state championship high school teams will be presented the Ben Eaton Sr. Championship Award, which honors the late Dunbar football coach. The area had all four state champs last fall: Old Mill in Class 4A, Frederick in Class 3A, Eastern Tech in Class 2A and Catoctin in Class 1A. Old Mill will be recognized with the A. Paul Menton Award as the highest ranked team in the chapter’s area.

For the first time a Courage Award will be presented to a player who has overcome substantial odds to continue his stellar academic success as well as his high school football career.

“The last few years, it’s come to our attention that there is usually at least one scholar athlete that has had a story of compassion, emotion if you will, just an example of a kid overcoming obstacles off the field typically that bear out recognizing because it’s remarkable that they’ve been able to continue on their path and do so well in spite of what they’ve had to deal with,” Mills said.

Johns Hopkins’ football team, which reached the NCAA Division III quarterfinals last fall, also will be honored.

Tickets are $60 per person and are available at 410-668-6901.

Stay tuned for a list of the nominees.

The Next Level - men's hoops roundup for March 8

As the regular season ended this weekend, we closed the book on the season for some our Baltimore-area basketball players, while others moved on to their conference tournaments. For those who have played their last game this year, we offer congratulations, and we bid adieu to the seniors who have taken the court for the last time on the college level. And to those for whom the season continues, we wish the best of luck.

This week’s top five men’s performers are a group of gentlemen who have produced consistently all season, all of them being recognized here at The Next Level multiple times.

Massachusetts senior guard Ricky Harris (Calvert Hall) had two of the best games of his season in leading the Minutemen to a berth in the Atlantic 10 tournament. In two games, Harris averaged 29.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals.

Senior guard Reggie Holmes helped Morgan State close out a nearly flawless Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference season with a pair of victories. In the two contests, Holmes recorded 34.0 points per game, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals, shooting a combined 23-for-39 from the field, including an impressive 15-for-24 from beyond the 3-point arc.

New Mexico State’s Jahmar Young (Du Bois) averaged 19.5 points and 8.0 assists over two games. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Kevin Palmer (Parkville) put up averages of 27.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals in two contests. Wrestling returning to Severn

Eighty years ago, Severn was a major player in wrestling. Wrestling was the first sport to be played at the school in 1920, and the team went undefeated.

The enthusiasm lasted for a number of decades but began to fade, and 17 years ago the sport was no longer part of the school’s extracurricular offerings.

That will change next year.

Athletic director Julian Domenech, a Severn grad and in his second year at the school, has been hearing from parents, teachers and youth leaders that wrestling is growing in popularity and he has decided to bring it back.

“I have three young kids in youth sports, and I’ve been hearing about the resurgence of the sport at the youth level,” he said. “All we have at Severn is basketball and swimming in the winter, and I thought wrestling might be a way to broaden what we offer our kids.

“After doing some research, I found there are middle school wrestling programs and that youth wrestling has been on the upswing for the last four or five years.”

Domenech said that besides being something else for kids to do at the school, he believes it will also strengthen the character of those who compete.

“The more I’ve learned about it, the more I see it is a time-consuming sport for which you have to be passionate and dedicated,” he said. “There is a lot of growing up involved in it.”

Domenech hired a new soccer coach last week: Mike McCarthy, who has been teaching and running camps for Coerver Soccer and has a semipro background. Now, the AD said, he is concentrating on finding a wrestling coach.

“We’ve gotten some inquiries about the position,” he said. “We’re looking for someone who will be the best fit for Severn. Someone who will build the program correctly and teach on and off the mat. We’re doing our due diligence.”

Domenech said he hopes to have the wrestling coach in place within a month.

“We’re excited about this,” he said. “Wrestling was here before and very successful. It [went] by the wayside, but now it’s coming back.”

Class 2A North semifinal showcase slated for Coppin State

As expected, the Class 2A North region semifinal menu is overwhelmingly appetizing and Baltimore City boys basketball fans will be able to find it at one stop on Thursday with Coppin State serving as the host.

In a doubleheader, No. 3 Edmondson takes on No. 9 Digital Harbor at 5 p.m., followed by No. 5 City vs. No. 8 Lake Clifton. Each team brings an impressive resume and talented players to the showdown.

Edmondson won its first Baltimore City championship last week with an upset win over Lake Clifton, edging Digital Harbor in the final game of the regular season to get into the title game. Digital Harbor is last year's Class 1A state champ; City is the defending 2A champ and the top seed in the region; and Lake Clifton is last year's 3A champ.

Edmondson features Stanton Kidd and Rodney Pratcher. Digital Harbor brings Davon Usher and Justin Jackson. City comes with Jordan Latham and Nick Faust. And Lake Clifton is led by Josh Selby and Durand Johnson.

The winners will meet in Saturday's region final game for the right to play in the state semifinals at Comcast Center in College Park.

Athlete of the Week is a real contest this week

What a week of outstanding achievement in high school athletics among boy athletes.

When it came time to pick The Sun's boys Athlete of the Week, there were more possible winners than we sometimes have in a month.

Donya Jackson, a Calvert Hall basketball player and two-time Baltimore Catholic League defensive player of the year, had a breakout offensive week, scoring 27 points against Archbishop Spalding in the BCL quarterfinals and 29 points against then-No. 1 St. Frances in the semifinals.

When fellow Sun sportswriter Ken Murray heard those numbers he said, "And you have options better than that?"

This week we had a real competition.

Robbie Creese, a junior at Glenelg, won the 1,600 (4:22), 3,200 (9:56) and 800-meter races (1:58.11) at the 2A indoor state track meet. He won the 800 with the best time in the Baltimore area this year and broke a 26-year-old record in the process.

Mark Colabucci, a Reservoir junior, won the 145-pound East regional wrestling championship to lead his team to the regional title and improve his own record to 40-0.

Charlie Melesh, a senior at Annapolis, set state swim meet records in the 100 butterfly (53.03) and the 200 individual medley (1:57.41). He also swam on the team's first place 200 medley relay team (1:46.08.)

Three other nominees, Sam Pellerito of Carver A&T and Adikola Oliganju and Elton Joe, both of Digital Harbor, each won 2A North regional wrestling titles. In each case, the regional titles were the first in their respective schools' history.

So who took the honor?

Bobby Bowman, a senior wrestler at Mount St. Joseph.

He went into the National Prep Wrestling Tournament at Lehigh University last weekend as the No. 6 seed. Over two days of competition, he beat the No. 3 seed, Scott Patrick of McDonogh, the Maryland Independent Schools champion, and the No. 2 seed, James Wieller of Wyoming Seminary (Pa.).

Bowman lost 5-4 in the championship match to No. 1 seed Tanner Eitel of Bishop Lynch (Texas), who was at one point warned for stalling after Bowman had escaped to close within 5-4 and aggressively sought to get a take down. The Gael senior got it, but the match official judged Bowman's take down at the edge of the mat that came as the buzzer sounded, coming an instant too late.

"We watched the film four or five times," said Mount St. Joseph coach Paul Triplett. "It was a pretty dramatic finish and it could have gone either way. As the referee conferred with the assistant referee everyone in the building was chanting 'Two! Two!'

"It was a very, very close call. But I guess we needed an extra half second. Bobby wrestled really well."

Bowman's second-place finish allowed his team to finish fifth in the tournament in which 114 teams competed. He was also the highest finishing competitor from Maryland.

Any one of the aforementioned boys could have been Athlete of the Week. For those who wonder, the final choice was determined based on the fact that Bowman performed on the national stage against the best in the country.

A look at Calvert Hall vs. Mount St. Joseph for BCL title

Tonight's Baltimore Catholic League boys basketball championship game -- Mount St. Joseph vs. Calvert Hall set for 7 p.m. at Loyola University's Reitz Arena -- promises to be an intriguing matchup bolstered by the developments that transpired in Sunday's semifinal round.

The top-seeded and regular-season champion Gaels (30-3) didn't come close to resembling the team that went undefeated in league play during the regular season, allowing Cardinal Gibbons to stay close throughout before advancing with a sluggish 53-45 win.

Mount St. Joseph coach Pat Clatchey described his team's performance as 'blase'; senior forward Ryley Beaumont said the team played uncharacteristically selfish at the offensive end; and senior guard Matt Miller added the team will have to pick it up significantly if a title is to be had.

Calvert Hall, on the other hand, goes into tonight's game oozing with confidence. Cardinals coach John Bauersfeld said his team had high expectations going into the season with seniors Jonathan Graham, Damion Lee and Donya Jackson primed to finally get over the hump.

The Cardinals (20-7) had no luck getting past either Mount St. Joe and St. Frances during the regular season and then the Panthers got the better of them in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference semifinals on their way to defending that league crown.

So finally, last night, the Cardinals were playing to their full potential and built a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter against St. Frances, only to see the Panthers rally and send the game into overtime. It would have been easy for for Calvert Hall to fold, almost understandable considering the track record, but the Cardinals -- behind 29 points from Jackson -- showed resolve and found a way to overcome. Which brings both teams to tonight's championship game.

Can Mount St. Joseph quickly right the ship and play the kind of team basketball that it has in winning 30 games this season? Will the Cardinals have enough energy and intensity left to maintain the level of play it showed in getting past St. Frances?

The Next Level -- men's hoops roundup for March 1

We’re hitting the home stretch at The Next Level, as some teams concluded regular-season play this past week. Of course, there are still conference and postseason tournaments, and we plan to keep on rolling until every player from the Baltimore area has played his or her last minute of the season.

This week’s men’s top five features three new faces and has a distinctly local flavor – even more so than usual – as those three are all from schools in Maryland. Here’s the list, in no particular order:

Loyola’s Jamal Barney (Southwestern) makes his debut in the top five this week. The junior guard averaged 22.0 points and 8.5 rebounds (including 4.0 offensive boards) over two games. Also making his first appearance is Towson sophomore guard Troy Franklin (Mount Carmel), who posted averages of 20.5 points, 5.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds in two contests. Completing the trio of state college players is Morgan State sophomore forward Kevin Thompson (Walbrook), who scored 20.5 points and pulled down 12.0 rebounds (6.0 offensive) over a pair of games.

The last two members of the top five will be familiar to you if you’ve been reading all season, as they are mainstays. New Mexico State’s Jahmar Young (Du Bois) averaged 21.5 points and shot a combined 5-for-9 from 3-point range over two contests. Virginia Tech’s Malcolm Delaney recorded averages of 24.0 points and 5.0 assists in two games.

An honorable mention goes to Maryland’s Sean Mosley (St. Frances), who shook off a recent shooting slump to average 18.5 points on 12-for-16 shooting from the field and 10-for-11 shooting from the foul line in two games. Mosley added 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists.

AKRON

74-68 victory at Bowling Green on Saturday: 5-for-8 FG, 0-for-2 3P, 2-for-2 FT, 12 points, five rebounds (three offensive), three assists, four turnovers, three fouls in 27 minutes

BRYANT
