Weather could affect indoor track regionals
This weekend’s possible snowstorm could have a big effect on the remaining indoor track regional meets.
There are 12 regional meets that were scheduled to take place from Jan. 30 to Feb. 10, with eight now set for Friday or later. Jill Masterman of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association said the weather has already affected each region in different ways.
One meet is set for Friday, with two meets scheduled to run Saturday (Class 1A West and Class 2A West), one on Monday, and two each on Tuesday and Wednesday. A storm that could wipe out Saturday’s meets and close schools for days afterward would cause problems with the rest of the regional schedule as well as the coming state meets.
The state meets are scheduled for Feb. 15 and 16 at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex. If the regional meets get pushed back, rescheduling the state meets could be required, something that has happened a few times in recent winters.
“You do everything you can not to move the state meet dates. You try to hold firm to them,” Masterman said.
School officials could make a decision about the weekend’s meets Friday. A good source of information is mpssaa.org, a Web site with the official schedules for all sports.
