The Next Level -- men's hoops roundup for Feb. 8

Welcome back to The Next Level. I hope you were able to dig yourselves out of the snow this past weekend and are nice and toasty today. Speaking of staying warm, some of our Baltimore-area men’s players certainly haven’t let their shots cool off.

Four of our top five performers might look familiar to you, as Massachusetts’ Ricky Harris (Calvert Hall), Morgan State’s Reggie Holmes (St. Frances), New Mexico State’s Jahmar Young (Du Bois) and Malcolm Delaney (Towson Catholic) of Virginia Tech experienced no drop-off in their lofty scoring numbers. On the season, Holmes (sixth, 22.8 points per game), Young (tied for 17th, 21.4 ppg) and Delaney (25th, 20.3 ppg) all rank in the top 25 in Division I in scoring average.

For the week, Holmes averaged 25.5 points over two games, shooting a combined 8-for-17 from 3-point range and 9-for-11 from the free-throw line. In one game, Young scored 25 points and added five assists. Delaney largely did his damage from the foul line, going a combined 27-for-30 from there in two games while averaging 25.5 points and 4.0 assists. Harris’ week was nothing to sneeze at, as he actually recorded the highest scoring average of the four, putting up 28.0 points per game in two contests while shooting 21-for-37 from the field.

There is one player who’s making his debut in the top five: Missouri’s Kim English. The Randallstown alum averaged 18 points (6-for-10 from beyond the arc, 10-for-11 from the charity stripe), five rebounds and three assists over two games.

The full roundup is below. Check back tonight for the women’s roundup.
