Girls hoops regionals set

The draw for the girls regional basketball tournament was held Sunday and seven Baltimore-area teams earned No. 1 seeds: Meade, River Hill, Catonsville, Digital Harbor, Liberty, Joppatowne and Dunbar.

As usual, the draw sets up some interesting potential matchups in the finals. If the games play out according to seeding, two 2009 state champions could meet in the Class 2A North title game -- Digital Harbor, which won in Class 1A last season, and City, the defending 2A champ.

A third 2009 state champion, Fallston, which won in Class 3A, is also in Class 2A now and the fourth-seeded Cougars could face fellow UCBAC team Elkton in the semifinals.

The top two teams in Anne Arundel County -- Arundel and Meade -- could play for the Class 4A East title. Meade, which is looking for its first trip to states since 1999, earned the No. 1 seed over the Wildcats, who won the last two regional titles and seven since 2000.

Liberty, the top Carroll County team, earned the top-seeded spot in Class 2A West with North Carroll second, but fourth-seeded South Carroll and defending regional champ North Hagerstown could have a say in the outcome. The last one of those three Carroll teams to make it to states was Liberty in 1983. North Carroll has never been.

Class 3A North appears to be one of the most competitive regions with top-seeded Catonsville facing a potential semifinal game with Western while Poly, which just upset City, and second-seeded Aberdeen could battle it out in the other half othe bracket.
