Even now, City's Taft OK with snowy Syracuse
A year from now, City’s LaShay Taft may be looking at just as much snow out her window, but she won’t be staying home from school. That will be just fine with her. She’d rather be playing basketball.
The senior guard with the longest-range jump shot around, signed with Syracuse in November. A Big East fan, she’s happy to be playing in the conference.
“When I went up there to visit I really liked it,” Taft said. “It was so nice up there. The apartment we were staying in was like brand new. The coaches were real cool and the players were. It’s also the Big East and I’m guaranteed playing time.”
That all sounded good in November, but now after all this snow ... No, seriously, she’s still happy with her choice no matter how much snow Syracuse gets.
Taft chose the Orange over James Madison, Providence and Georgetown (all of which can get a good bit of snow).
“I just really like the Big East, because it’s got a lot of competition,” said Taft, who follows IND graduate Chandrea Jones to Syracuse.
Big East schools have become increasingly popular with some of the area’s best players. Last spring, St. Frances’ Angel McCoughtry led Louisville to the national final. Among the local players currently in the conference: McDonogh’s Brittany Mallory (Notre Dame), St. Frances’ Mi-Khida Hankins (Providence); Seton Keough’s Asya Bussie (West Virginia) and Western’s Akeema Richards (West Virginia).
Taft said she was relieved to get the decision over with and especially to make the calls to the three coaches whose scholarship offers she turned down.
As for this week in the snow, except for getting out a while Tuesday, Taft has been stuck inside, relying on her phone, Facebook and homework to keep her busy. She doesn’t like the snow but knows she’ll likely see a lot more of it in Syracuse.
“That’s what a lot of people say. I’d better get ready for this kind of weather, but I guess they’re more used to it than we are. I hope they’re more prepared,” she said.
