Amid titles, Falcons' Emily Lloyd outswims the guys

Severna Park's Emily Lloyd brought home her usual cache of gold from Saturday's state Class 4A-3A swimming championships, but lost among the medals were a couple of swims that would have beaten the boys.

Her split in the 400-yard freestyle relay -- 48.9 seconds -- was faster than the winning time in either of the boys 100 freestyle races -- Class 4A-3A (49.02) or Class 3A-2A-1A (49.26).

The senior wasn't too happy with that relay in which she swam the anchor leg only to see Urbana touch just ahead of her. The Falcons finished in 3:40.93 to Urbana's 3:40.69. She felt better when she heard her split time after the race.

"That's pretty crazy," she said. "I was a little disppointed because I didn't catch the team next to us. I didn't think I was going that fast. I was pretty happy when I heard that."

If you don't think that counts because it was a split time. How about this? Her time in the 200 freestyle (1:52.69) would have won the boys Class 4A-3A race. Just barely ahead of the guys' winning time of 1:52.70, but ahead of it.

Those unique moments closed out a stellar high school career in which Lloyd won the maximum of eight individual gold medals. She also contributed to six relay titles and holds individual meet records in the 50, 100, 200 and 500 freestyle as well as the 200 free and 200 medley relays. In her four years, she helped the Falcons to three state Class 4A-3A team titles.

Saturday, she brought home two individual golds -- the 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle, both in meet record and All-America times -- one meet-record relay gold, one relay silver, two times that would have beaten the guys and she contributed to another team title.

Not a bad day --or career -- in the pool for Lloyd, who will swim next season at Virginia.

Digital Harbor's McClure featured in SI

Be sure to check out Digital Harbor senior track standout Alyssa McClure in this week's edition of Sports Illustrated.

McClure was among the 'Faces in the Crowd' segment for her strong performance at the Baltimore City Championships earlier this month. She won three events -- the 55 meters, 300 and 500 -- as the Rams snapped Western's 18-year strangehold on the team title.

McClure went on to win a Class 2A state title in the 55 this week.

Carroll indoor track, freshmen sports appear safe for year

Indoor track and freshmen sports programs in Carroll County appear to have escaped the budget ax — at least for now.

The county’s board of education, which originally had included both among the cuts in its proposed fiscal 2011 budget, amended the budget on Wednesday to tentatively spare the programs for another year. The decision, however, might be revisited if further cuts are required this spring.

“We survived the first round of cuts, and it’s pretty much a done deal,” South Carroll track coach Rob Pennington said. “We had our county meeting [Tuesday] night, and a couple of coaches and our supervisor were saying that pretty much unless something major comes up between now and [the official budget vote], it looks pretty good for us.”

To cover the costs, the county plans to raise participation fees for athletes from $80 to $100.
The initial decision to cut the programs, which would save approximately $123,000, sparked outcry from scores of athletes, coaches and parents, who launched online petitions and a Facebook group with more than 1,900 members.

Track athletes have been particularly vocal, packing board of education meetings and dawning black and white “Save Carroll County Indoor Track & Field” T-shirts.

“I think we made an impact— we showed them that we actually care,” said Jake Baugher, a Westminster High senior who helped lead the effort to save indoor track.

BCL luncheon stirs up memories of rich tradition

The Baltimore Catholic League’s high level of play will speak for itself when the 39th edition of the boys basketball tournament takes place this weekend at Loyola University’s Reitz Arena.

As for its rich tradition, it was oozing at the league’s annual awards luncheon Tuesday afternoon at Snyder’s Willow Grove Restaurant in Linthicum Heights.

Every corner of the banquet room had a wealth of basketball knowledge and talent. Legendary former coaches Jerry Savage (Loyola), Mark Amatucci (Calvert Hall), Cokey Robertson (St. Maria Goretti) and William Wells (St. Frances) were on hand along with the current players and coaches for all seven teams.

Host Keith Mills provided a reminder of the large number of talented players who have come through the BCL — the likes of Carmelo Anthony (Towson Catholic), Juan Dixon (Calvert Hall), Rudy Gay (Archbishop Spalding), Quintin Dailey (Cardinal Gibbons), Mark Karcher (St. Frances) — and on and on. Guest speaker Jimmy Patsos, Loyola University’s head coach, urged the current players to take pride in the fact they have the opportunity to play in the league and take full advantage both on and off the court. Earlier in the season, there was preliminary talk that the league might fold largely because school administrators felt there was no need to have a second tournament with the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs completed over the weekend. While modifications will be made for the coming seasons, BCL commissioner Jack Degele said the league isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

“The BCL has a great tradition of history and excellence in high school basketball, both what it represents on the court and off the court. I’ve always been very proud and feel fortunate to be a part of the Baltimore Catholic League,” said 18-year Mount St. Joseph coach Pat Clatchey, who was named the BCL’s Coach of the Year for the eighth time.

The opening round of this weekend’s tournament is set for Saturday with games at 5 p.m., 6:45 and 8:30. The semifinals are set for Sunday at 6:45 p.m. and 8:30 with the championship game slated for 7 p.m. Monday. The tournament seedings will be announced after Thursday night’s completion of the regular season. Mount St. Joseph, already declared regular-season champion, has earned a bye for Saturday’s opening round.

Mount St. Joseph and defending BCL tournament champ St. Frances, which captured last weekend’s MIAA championship, already have received invitations to the prestigious Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament, which will celebrate its 50th year. Degele said Calvert Hall also has a chance to receive an invitation. The tournament is set for March 18-20 at Frostburg University.

Federation rules get tough on football concussions

The National Federation of State High School Associations football rules committee has toughened its rules for players who sustain concussions or appear to sustain concussions.

Beginning this fall, players showing signs of a concussion have to leave the game and cannot return to action until they are cleared by a medical professional. Previous rules required players to be removed from action only if they are rendered unconscious, but many players who sustain concussions do not lose consciousness.

Following is the complete excerpt from the NFSH news release pertaining to the new concussion rule:

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (February 23, 2010) — Effective with the 2010 high school football season, any player who shows signs, symptoms or behaviors associated with a concussion must be removed from the game and shall not return to play until cleared by an appropriate health-care professional.

The concussion rule was one of 12 changes approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Football Rules Committee at its meeting last month in Indianapolis. The rule changes subsequently were approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

The previous rule directed officials to remove an athlete from play if “unconscious or apparently unconscious.” The previous rule also allowed for return to play based on written authorization by a medical doctor. Now, officials are charged with removing any player who shows signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion, such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion or balance problems, and shall not return to play until cleared by an appropriate health-care professional.

“Given that the vast majority of concussions do not include a loss of consciousness, but that athletes often show obvious evidence of concussion, the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) strongly believes that officials must continue to be empowered to remove these athletes from play, thus protecting them from further injury,” said Dr. Michael Koester, chair of the SMAC. “Continued participation in any sport following a concussion can lead to worsening concussion symptoms, as well as increased risk for further injury to the brain and even death.

“The safety of the athlete is of paramount concern during any athletic contest. Officials, coaches and administrators are being asked to make all efforts at ensuring that concussed athletes do not continue to participate. Thus, coaches, players and administrators should also be looking for signs of concussion in all athletes and should immediately remove any suspected concussed athlete from play.”

In addition to football, the new concussion language is being placed in all NFHS rules books for the 2010-11 season, as well as the “NFHS Suggested Guidelines for Management of Concussion.”

Atkins repeats as BCL Player of the Year

Mount St. Joseph senior point guard Eric Atkins, a four-year starter who has led the No. 2 Gaels to a 28-3 season, was named the Baltimore Catholic League's Player of the Year for a second straight season at the league's 39th annual luncheon Tuesday afternoon at Snyder's Restaurant in Linthicum Heights.

Atkins, who is set to play at Notre Dame, is averaging 15 points, four assists, four rebounds and two steals this season.

"It just feels great to be mentioned with all the great players of the past from the BCL. ... There's so many players, it's an honor to be included," Atkins said. "The BCL is the best league in the country to me. I didn't play in any other league, but from what I hear, this is the best league and every game is a tough game."

Mount St. Joseph coach Pat Clatchey was selected as the BCL Coach of the Year for the eighth time. The 18-year coach, who has 427 career wins at Mount St. Joseph, guided the Gaels to their sixth regular-season championship since 2003. The team takes an 11-0 mark into tonight's game against No. 4 Calvert Hall and has already assured itself the top seed in this weekend's BCL playoffs. The Gaels have won three BCL tournament championships under Clatchey.

"It's nice to be recognized, but I didn't play one second in any of the games, so I consider this a team award -- your staff contributes greatly and your players," Clatchey said. "I've always felt very proud and fortunate to feel part of the BCL. I grew up watching the league, and an opportunity to coach in the BCL has been a great experience."

Calvert Hall senior forward Donya Jackson has long been known for his hard work containing opposing teams' top scoring threats and he was chosen the BCL's Defensive Player of the Year for a second straight season.

The Next Level - men's hoops roundup for Feb. 22

Welcome back to another week of The Next Level, and quite the week it was for men’s players from the Baltimore area. In fact, it was the strongest week of the season in terms of overall performances by former local standouts.

Because of that, we’re going to depart from the norm today. There were so many notable performances that naming only a top five list would leave out some very deserving players. So, without further delay, here’s a top 10, in alphabetical order by college team.

To start things off, congratulations are in order for Bryant guard Raphael Jordan (John Carroll), who helped the Bulldogs beat Wagner on Thursday, their first victory of the season, bringing a little excitement to what has to have been a very trying year. For the week, Bryant averaged 13.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals over two games. Devin Brown (City) of Holy Cross also had a strong week, scoring 19.5 points per game and making 13 of 14 free throws in two contests.

La Salle’s Steve Weingarten (Catonsville) had easily his best week since The Next Level made its basketball debut. The junior forward averaged 12.5 points and an impressive 13.5 rebounds, including 7.0 offensive boards, over two games. Longwood’s Kevin Swecker (Mount St. Joseph) is another newcomer to the list; in two games, he put up averages of 16.5 points and 3.5 assists.

Massachusetts received strong weeks from two local players, Ricky Harris (Calvert Hall) and Terrell Vinson (St. Frances). Harris recorded 16.5 points per game and 4.5 assists over two contests. Vinson averaged 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds (3.5 offensive) and 2.0 steals.

Morgan State’s Reggie Holmes (St. Frances) continued to score in bunches, averaging 18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds, as well as shooting a combined 22-for-25 from the foul line, over three games. New Mexico State’s Jahmar Young (Du Bois) scored 20.0 points and added 5.0 assists in a pair of games.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Kevin Palmer (Parkville) turned in a nice all-around performance, averaging 14.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists over two contests. Towson Catholic alum Malcolm Delaney of Virginia Tech put up 25.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in two games, playing an average of 37.5 minutes.

Here’s the rest of the roundup:

Scorpions finish regular season with streak

If there were any questions about whether Oakland Mills' girls basketball team would be ready for the playoffs, the Scorpions erased them in the last week of the regular season.

The Scorpions defeated three teams ahead of them in the Howard County race and rose to the No. 4 seed in the Class 2A South regional draw. Wins over Atholton, 52-44; Mount Hebron, 46-44; and Glenelg, 45-37; boosted the Scorpions' record to 11-9.

Coach Seth Willingham said he was concerned about how the Scorpions would react after their long break for the snowstorms. Before the break, they had just missed beating Howard County champ River Hill, falling 37-35 after going 6-for-16 from the free throw line.

"I was a little worried, because we had three tough games," said Scorpions coach Seth Willingham. "I wasn't too worried about the Ws and Ls, because playing good teams is only going to help us going into the playoffs."

The Scorpions got together to practice on their own during the break, so they were ready when they got back on the court.

The Hill sisters -- senior Nicole and sophomore Jasmine -- led the way in all three games.

Nicole Hill has 31 points, 25 rebounds, 11 assists and 11 steals while also playing terrific defense, holding the oppositions best players well below their averages. Jasmine contributed 43 points, 17 rebounds and 16 steals and her performance at the line, 8-for-10, was a key to edging Mount Hebron.

Patrice Jones helped the Scorpions in the paint with a physical game from the 5-foot-7 sophomore who averages about six points and nine rebounds. Kara Hight had a 20-point game against Atholton despite being in foul trouble. The team also shot well from the free-throw line, hitting 19 of 23 vs. Mount Hebron and 20 of 29 vs. Glenelg.

Willingham said starting four sophomores made for a tough early going, especially against Glenelg and Atholton in the first meetings.

"We made a lot of young mistakes," he said. "At the beginning of the year, they had a lot thrown at them and they got overwhelmed a little. I know they wanted to pay back Glenelg and Atholton. That was a great motivator and they knew they had to win two of the three to get a seed for the playoffs."

The Scorpions have a bye in Friday's first round of the playoffs and they will host the winner of the McDonough/Marriotts Ridge game on Monday.

Girls hoops regionals set

The draw for the girls regional basketball tournament was held Sunday and seven Baltimore-area teams earned No. 1 seeds: Meade, River Hill, Catonsville, Digital Harbor, Liberty, Joppatowne and Dunbar.

As usual, the draw sets up some interesting potential matchups in the finals. If the games play out according to seeding, two 2009 state champions could meet in the Class 2A North title game -- Digital Harbor, which won in Class 1A last season, and City, the defending 2A champ.

A third 2009 state champion, Fallston, which won in Class 3A, is also in Class 2A now and the fourth-seeded Cougars could face fellow UCBAC team Elkton in the semifinals.

The top two teams in Anne Arundel County -- Arundel and Meade -- could play for the Class 4A East title. Meade, which is looking for its first trip to states since 1999, earned the No. 1 seed over the Wildcats, who won the last two regional titles and seven since 2000.

Liberty, the top Carroll County team, earned the top-seeded spot in Class 2A West with North Carroll second, but fourth-seeded South Carroll and defending regional champ North Hagerstown could have a say in the outcome. The last one of those three Carroll teams to make it to states was Liberty in 1983. North Carroll has never been.

Class 3A North appears to be one of the most competitive regions with top-seeded Catonsville facing a potential semifinal game with Western while Poly, which just upset City, and second-seeded Aberdeen could battle it out in the other half othe bracket.

More changes to track regionals

The weather problems that have closed schools Tuesday have once again affected the indoor track region meets.

The Class 2A Central and Class 3A West meets both were postponed. Now, the Class 3A West Region meet is set for Wednesday at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex at 4. The Class 3A West meet was pushed back to Friday at the Fifth Regiment Armory at 4 p.m.

Also, the summary of changes in the region meets last Friday left out the fact that the Class 1A Central meet will go Thursday at the Armory at 4 p.m.

The state meets remain scheduled for Monday and Tuesday of next week. That won't change as long as all of the region meets get completed by Friday. The state meets were already moved back a week because of the delays.

Fallston's Harlee gets back in the game

Jess Harlee raced into girls basketball practice Monday morning at Fallston feeling better than she had in a long time.

After rehabilitating the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee, which she tore in August, Harlee was cleared to go full-tilt in practice. For a girl whose full-tilt is about three gears higher than most people can manage, sitting out the first 2 1/2 months of her senior basketball season has been excruciating. She expects to play her first game this week.

“I can’t wait,” she said after rushing from physical therapy to the doctor to practice Monday morning. “I just ran into practice. I was so excited to be going all-out scrimmaging.”

Harlee, a 6-foot forward, had an exceptional All-Metro junior season, leading the Cougars to a 28-0 record and the state Class 3A championship. In the title game, a 65-62 win over highly favored Paint Branch, she had 28 points, including 19 in the fourth quarter, when she went 10-for-12 from the free-throw line and hit two clutch foul shots with 3.3 seconds to go.

She would have been a front-runner for Player of the Year this winter, but she tore the ACL while playing with her Fairfax Stars Amateur Athletic Union team at the Nike Nationals in Georgia.

Three weeks ago, she was able to return to the Cougars’ practices, doing everything except scrimmaging.

She has worked on strengthening her hips and quadriceps to help prevent a recurrence of the injury, but reeling in her aggressive, all-out play probably won’t happen.

“I’m going to try to stay on the floor when I come back, but I can’t make any promises,” said Harlee, who has been known to crash into the stands while chasing a loose ball.

“I feel I just need to go out and play. I have to be aware of it, don’t go for a right-handed layup if someone’s going to undercut me, but I can’t not be aggressive. That’s not who I am.”

In November, Harlee signed a letter of intent to play at West Virginia, so she made sure to check with the Mountaineers’ coaching staff before returning to the court. She said coach Mike Carey gave her his blessing.

“I checked in with Coach Carey and asked him what he thought,” Harlee said. “This year has been extremely hard. I’ve had a lot of stuff going on personally, and I really need to play. I was very happy with his answer. He’s not holding me back, and he fully understands. That makes me even happier that I’m going there.”

The Next Level - men's hoops roundup for Feb. 15

We’re back with another installment of The Next Level, and this week there are some changes to the starting lineup.

That is to say this week’s list of the top five men’s performers looks a little different than usual. Making his debut is UMBC guard Chauncey Gilliam (Hammond), who averaged 17.0 points and 5.3 rebounds over three games in a busy week for the Retrievers. Jimmy Conyers of Akron makes his second appearance, and his first since the inaugural top five. The Baltimore native scored 15.5 points per game and grabbed 9.5 rebounds in two contests. After a two-week absence, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Kevin Palmer (Parkville) also returns after averaging 23.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 36 minutes over two games.

Massachusetts’ Ricky Harris took up his usual residence in the top five as he continued to fill up the hoop at an impressive clip. The Calvert Hall alum scored 28.0 points, going a combined 14-for-17 from the free-throw line, and added 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in two contests. New Mexico State’s Jahmar Young rounds it out; the former Du Bois standout averaged 17.0 points over two games.

There was also a bit of unsavory news about one of our local players this past week. Oklahoma’s Andrew Fitzgerald, who attended St. Frances, Towson Catholic and Owings Mills, was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting at a Norman, Okla., mall the night of Feb. 7 along with teammate Steven Pledger. The two were suspended for Tuesday’s loss to Texas Tech and returned to action Saturday against Oklahoma State.

Updated region, state indoor track schedule released

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association released a new schedule for the remaining region and state indoor track meets on Friday morning.

The state meets have been moved back a week after the area was hit by two powerful snowstorms and will now take place Monday, Feb. 22 (Class 1A and 2A) and Tuesday, Feb. 23 (Class 3A and 4A). Both meets are at 4 p.m. at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex.

This allows for completion of the remaining eight regional meets and gives the athletes at least five days before having to turn around and compete in the state meets.

The new region schedule starts Monday at 11 a.m. when the Class 3A East and Central combine with the Class 2A East schools that haven’t competed yet at the Sports and Learning Complex at 11 a.m.

After that, the Class 3A West (Sports and Learning Complex) and Class 2A Central (Fifth Regiment Armory) will go on Tuesday. Both meets will start at 4 p.m.

The Class 1A West Region meet is set for noon on Wednesday at the Hagerstown Community College – with the Class 2A West meet following it there at 4 p.m.

Later that day comes the last region meet, the Class 4A West. That’s set for the Baltimore Armory at 4 p.m.

Regional track meets postponed

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association now hopes to have an updated version of its schedule for region and then state meets on Friday.

Eight of the 12 region meets still haven't been run -- and they were supposed to have been finished by Feb. 10. In addition, the state meets were scheduled to run for all four classes on Monday and Tuesday. But now they're going to have to come up with a schedule to fit in the region meets and give the athletes a chance to get themselves re-set for a state meet.

They already had some early plans to do region and state meets on both Monday and Tuesday. But unclear plans remained for some of the regions and two of the classes, and how all of the region and state meets will fit together. The state meets are scheduled to take place at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover.

We'll have more updated information on Friday. In addition, those details will be on the state's web site, mpssaa.org. Stay tuned, folks. This will be interesting.

Former Long Reach hoops standout Webb highlighted

Former Long Reach basketball star Darryl Webb is doing his thing at Indiana University of Pennsylvania these days, and he also found his way on SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays on Wednesday night -- twice.

The 6-foot-6 junior forward earned the No. 8 play with a jaw-dropping baseline jam and then managed to upstage himself with the No. 5 selection, taking a teammate's pass off the backboard and jamming it home.

Webb, who led Long Reach to its only state title in 2006, is having a standout junior season in the college ranks. He's averaging 17.3 points and 10.8 rebounds for IUP (18-2) with 12 double-doubles on the season. The Crimson Hawks are ranked 11th in the NABC Division II Coaches poll and have a share of first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's West Division with a 7-1 mark.

Webb, who earlier in the season became the program's 25th player to surpass the 1,000-point plateau, has been selected the PSAC West Player of the Week five times this season.

In his senior year at Long Reach, Webb averaged 16.5 points and 11.5 rebounds to earn Howard County Player of the Year and second-team All-Metro honors.

Even now, City's Taft OK with snowy Syracuse

A year from now, City’s LaShay Taft may be looking at just as much snow out her window, but she won’t be staying home from school. That will be just fine with her. She’d rather be playing basketball.

The senior guard with the longest-range jump shot around, signed with Syracuse in November. A Big East fan, she’s happy to be playing in the conference.

“When I went up there to visit I really liked it,” Taft said. “It was so nice up there. The apartment we were staying in was like brand new. The coaches were real cool and the players were. It’s also the Big East and I’m guaranteed playing time.”

That all sounded good in November, but now after all this snow ... No, seriously, she’s still happy with her choice no matter how much snow Syracuse gets.

Taft chose the Orange over James Madison, Providence and Georgetown (all of which can get a good bit of snow).

“I just really like the Big East, because it’s got a lot of competition,” said Taft, who follows IND graduate Chandrea Jones to Syracuse.

Big East schools have become increasingly popular with some of the area’s best players. Last spring, St. Frances’ Angel McCoughtry led Louisville to the national final. Among the local players currently in the conference: McDonogh’s Brittany Mallory (Notre Dame), St. Frances’ Mi-Khida Hankins (Providence); Seton Keough’s Asya Bussie (West Virginia) and Western’s Akeema Richards (West Virginia).

Taft said she was relieved to get the decision over with and especially to make the calls to the three coaches whose scholarship offers she turned down.

As for this week in the snow, except for getting out a while Tuesday, Taft has been stuck inside, relying on her phone, Facebook and homework to keep her busy. She doesn’t like the snow but knows she’ll likely see a lot more of it in Syracuse.

“That’s what a lot of people say. I’d better get ready for this kind of weather, but I guess they’re more used to it than we are. I hope they’re more prepared,” she said.

Regional track meets rescheduled

The regional indoor track meets were rescheduled again today as the weather problems continue.

Wednesday's meets now also are postponed. The new tentative schedule will have the Class 1A Central Region meet set for Thursday at the Fifth Regiment Armory, including those schools from the East Region who had yet to compete. Then on Friday will be Class 1A and 2A West, both at Hagerstown Community College, at noon and 4 p.m., respectively. Class 4A West is then set for the Armory at 4 p.m.

Bigger changes will come on Monday. The Class 1A state meet is going to be at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex at 11 a.m. But the MPSSAA also will run the Class 2A Central Region meet there at the same time – along with the East Region teams who need to compete there.

The Class 4A state meet is set for Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the same location, but one of the Class 3A Region meets will take place at the same time, although the MPSSAA hasn’t made a final decision on which one.

Final decisions still must be made on all three of the Class 3A Region meets plus the Class 2A and 3A state meets. Check mpssaa.org each day for more updates.

The Next Level -- men's hoops roundup for Feb. 8

Welcome back to The Next Level. I hope you were able to dig yourselves out of the snow this past weekend and are nice and toasty today. Speaking of staying warm, some of our Baltimore-area men’s players certainly haven’t let their shots cool off.

Four of our top five performers might look familiar to you, as Massachusetts’ Ricky Harris (Calvert Hall), Morgan State’s Reggie Holmes (St. Frances), New Mexico State’s Jahmar Young (Du Bois) and Malcolm Delaney (Towson Catholic) of Virginia Tech experienced no drop-off in their lofty scoring numbers. On the season, Holmes (sixth, 22.8 points per game), Young (tied for 17th, 21.4 ppg) and Delaney (25th, 20.3 ppg) all rank in the top 25 in Division I in scoring average.

For the week, Holmes averaged 25.5 points over two games, shooting a combined 8-for-17 from 3-point range and 9-for-11 from the free-throw line. In one game, Young scored 25 points and added five assists. Delaney largely did his damage from the foul line, going a combined 27-for-30 from there in two games while averaging 25.5 points and 4.0 assists. Harris’ week was nothing to sneeze at, as he actually recorded the highest scoring average of the four, putting up 28.0 points per game in two contests while shooting 21-for-37 from the field.

There is one player who’s making his debut in the top five: Missouri’s Kim English. The Randallstown alum averaged 18 points (6-for-10 from beyond the arc, 10-for-11 from the charity stripe), five rebounds and three assists over two games.

The full roundup is below. Check back tonight for the women’s roundup.

Baltimore County pushes back basketball title games

In the ongoing snow shuffle, the Baltimore County's girls and boys basketball championship games have been moved to Feb. 23 instead of Feb. 19. The JV finals will be Feb. 24.

That will allow teams to continue making up games until Feb. 19, which is now the final play date in Baltimore County.

Ron Belinko, coordinator of athletics for the Baltimore County public schools, said that as of today, most county teams should have just one game to make up if they have followed the policy of playing on the next available date. However, should more snow arrive Tuesday and Wednesday as predicted, and schools remain closed the rest of the week, that could put teams three games behind with only five days left to play.

The state playoff schedule for basketball has not changed. The draw is scheduled for Feb. 21 and regionals begin on Feb. 26 for girls and Feb. 27 for boys.

IAAM adjusts to snow closings

The big snow arrived at just the wrong time for the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland -- at tournament time. Sunday night, IAAM officials announced changes to the schedules for basketball and swimming. Indoor soccer tournament details will come later.

In basketball, the B and C conferences will play their first round games Wednesday. The quarterfinals in the A, B and C conferences will go Thursday with the semifinals Saturday. The title games, originally scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 14 at Stevenson University, will be moved to Monday, Feb. 15 at a site yet to be determined. Officials will make every effort to put all three games at the same site.

The swimming championships have been rescheduled for Sunday, Feb. 14 at UMBC at 9 a.m. That meet was originally scheduled for Super Bowl Sunday and then moved to Tuesday.

One of the reasons these events were moved so far ahead was to give athletes time to practice before they have to compete again. All public schools in the Baltimore area will be closed on Monday. Additional changes likely will be necessary with more snow predicted for Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Stay tuned.

What local athletes did on their snow day

High school athletes enjoyed a rare Saturday off from practice amid this huge snowstorm, but that didn't necessarily mean they weren't getting a workout.

North Carroll's Caitlin Bach figured she worked out plenty helping to shovel the driveway of her Carroll County home and those of some of her neighbors. She likes the snow and said it might not be a bad thing to have a few days off from basketball practice.

"I think sometimes with the whole mental aspect of it, it's a good thing to have a little bit of a break," Bach said. "With staying in shape, a couple days shouldn't hurt too much, especially with shoveling show the whole time. That's quite a workout."

It's also a chore that might last a while.

"I like snow, but I don't know about all the wind. We probably have two feet by now.
Right when you shovel it, you look and it's already covered again. it's very frustrating," said Bach, who recently set the all-time Carroll County girls basketball scoring record.

Her family, including sister Sarah who is a freshman basketball player at Manchester Valley, had been looking at pictures to see when they last had this much snow. The 17-year-old said it was when she was 5, but she thinks this one will drop more snow before it ends.

More snow means more money for Atholton's Matt Robinson, who was watching the Georgetown-Villanova basketball game in the late morning but planned to get out in the neighborhood in the afternoon or evening.

"Once the show stops, I'm going to go out and make some money on my street with my shovel. I think depending on how many houses I can do, I can get up to around $200 on a day like today. The one we had in December I did pretty well," said the senior football and basketball player who will play football in the fall at Maryland.

Robinson and Bach said they tried sledding for a while, but that it was too cold to continue. For Robinson, the shoveling likely will be followed by video games at a friends' house.

City football player Adrian Coxson said he also had indoor plans, spending his day on Facebook. He won't get his workouts in, but he said he just won't eat too much, so a few days out of the weight room shouldn't hurt.

He is not a fan of snow, so watching it pile up outside his window makes him happy to think about next winter when he will be playing football at Florida.

"I'm just going to stay in the house," Coxson said. "[Next year] I know it is going to be warm all the time and I won't have to worry about walking around out there."

Digital Harbor's Asia Logan and Arundel's Talen Watson planned to stay inside on their day off from basketball practice.

Logan said she caught up on some sleep and was cleaning her room. Saturday afternoon, she planned to watch some basketball games and get on the computer.

"I was a snowbunny when I was younger, but as I grow up, I just like staying in the house," said Logan, who would have been at practice between 8 and 10:30 Saturday morning if not for the snow.

Watson, who would have practiced from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., said she was watching basketball games on television with her mother. A big fan of the Big East men and women, she was also catching the Georgetown-Villanova men's game.

"I do like snow," Watson said. "I was born in Hawaii and we never really experienced snow there, but when I came to Maryland, I experienced snow a lot. I don't like being out in the snow, but sitting there drinking hot chocolate, watching a cool movie while the snow is falling, it's enjoyable."

Logan and Watson won't be escaping the snow next year in college as Coxson will. Logan has signed with Pitt and Watson with Massachusetts.

As for when these athletes might actually get back to class and court?

Coxson has the most faith in the public works departments guessing Tuesday. Robinson agreed, but said it might take until Wednesday. Bach and Watson agree on Wednesday. Logan heard there might be more snow on Tuesday or Wednesday, so she's guessing Thursday or Friday.

I didn't ask them when they thought the snow might stop ...

Weather could affect indoor track regionals

This weekend’s possible snowstorm could have a big effect on the remaining indoor track regional meets.

There are 12 regional meets that were scheduled to take place from Jan. 30 to Feb. 10, with eight now set for Friday or later. Jill Masterman of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association said the weather has already affected each region in different ways.

One meet is set for Friday, with two meets scheduled to run Saturday (Class 1A West and Class 2A West), one on Monday, and two each on Tuesday and Wednesday. A storm that could wipe out Saturday’s meets and close schools for days afterward would cause problems with the rest of the regional schedule as well as the coming state meets.

The state meets are scheduled for Feb. 15 and 16 at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex. If the regional meets get pushed back, rescheduling the state meets could be required, something that has happened a few times in recent winters.

“You do everything you can not to move the state meet dates. You try to hold firm to them,” Masterman said.

School officials could make a decision about the weekend’s meets Friday. A good source of information is mpssaa.org, a Web site with the official schedules for all sports.

Caringi III to play for Caringi Jr.

Calvert Hall soccer standout Pete Caringi III considered a couple of other schools, but when it came down to it, there was no question where he would be playing his college ball: UMBC under 19-year coach Pete Caringi Jr.

"It's kind of what I've wanted for a while," the younger Caringi said. "I play my best when I'm in comfortable surroundings, and I've been on the sidelines there since I was 6. It's a good fit for me."

Caringi, who scored 14 goals and added six assists in his senior year at Calvert Hall, has never been coached by his father, aside from a rare occasion when the latter filled in for a club coach during a practice or game.

The Retrievers return nearly everybody from last year's team that qualified for the NCAA tournament. Caringi III is familiar with the returning players and is looking forward to just fitting in.

"I expect it to be hard, and I've already been training. I just want to play the best I possibly can for him," said Caringi III.

Football: MIAA-WCAC showdowns set

The Baltimore-Washington area's two strongest high school football leagues, the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference are in the early stages of discussing a possible merger by fall 2011. In the meantime, the possibilities of such a merger will be showcased at the inaugural I-95 Classic on Sept. 4 at Towson University’s Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Although the lineup is still tentative, the Classic is set to finish off the day with a meeting between defending MIAA A Conference champion Gilman and WCAC champ Good Counsel. The two played in September with Good Counsel taking a 49-37 victory.

The tentative slate of games: Mount St. Joseph vs. Bishop McNamara at 11 a.m.; Loyola vs. DeMatha at 2 p.m.; Calvert Hall vs. Archbishop Spalding at 5 p.m.; and Gilman vs. Good Counsel at 8 p.m.

“We wanted to put something out there to highlight the power that we have as high school football in the state,” said Tony Kennedy, who is organizing the event through his nonprofit organization Extra Point.

“Most states are gauged on their high school football by their college teams. In California, you have USC; in Florida, you look at Miami; in Texas, you look at Texas, and so on, but that’s a little deceptive because two-thirds of our athletes don’t go to the University of Maryland. It’s unfortunate that all our kids don’t go to one school. Then you could really gauge our high school football,” Kennedy said.

“In setting up this, we wanted to flex our muscles to the rest of the country. The teams that are in this Classic are some of the best teams on the East Coast.”

St. Frances, Spalding girls set for Thursday

The girls basketball game between No. 1 St. Frances and No. 3 Archbishop Spalding has been rescheduled for Thursday at 5:15 p.m. at St. Frances.

The day will feature a triple-header between the two schools with the JV boys playing at 3:30 p.m and the varsity boys tipping off at 7. The girls JV game will be held at Spalding.

The girls games were postponed from Wednesday, because Spalding was closed along with the Anne Arundel County public schools after Tuesday night's snowfall.

Closings postpone Anne Arundel games, swim finals

Schools were closed in Anne Arundel County on Wednesday, postponing athletics events for a second straight day. All other local public school systems were open with games to be played as scheduled.

County basketball games will be made up on Thursday if teams do not have non-league games already scheduled. Severna Park and Old Mill will move their boys and girls games to Monday. The showdown between the No. 5 Arundel girls and undefeated and No. 6 Meade will be Thursday at 6:45 p.m. at Arundel.

In swimming, Meade, Southern, North County and Glen Burnie will have their meet Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the Annapolis Swim Club. Old Mill, Annapolis, Chesapeake and Northeast will follow at 6 p.m.

The county swimming championships have been moved to Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. at the Annapolis Swim Club. Originally scheduled for Friday, the meet was moved so teams do not have to swim on back-to-back days, said Greg LeGrand, coordinator of athletics for the Anne Arundel County public schools.

Archbishop Spalding was also closed for the day, postponing the girls basketball game between No. 1 St. Frances and No. 3 Archbishop Spalding. Plans for a makeup game were not finalized as of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Fallston alum Morlock named Wesley baseball team captain

The Wesley College baseball team has named senior third baseman Grant Morlock (Fallston) its captain for the 2010 season.

Morlock, a three-year starter, had a standout season as a junior, finishing in the Capital Athletic Conference’s top 10 in seven offensive categories, including second in walks (33) and third in on-base percentage (.492). He led the Wolverines in both of those categories and tied for the team lead in home runs (six) and extra-base hits (20).

“Grant has been a big part of Wesley baseball these last three years, and I am proud to have him” as captain, coach Tripp Keister said. “He has been a leader both on and off the field since he arrived at Wesley, and he will play an integral role in our upcoming season.”

Morlock has batted .334 over his college career, with a .494 slugging percentage and a .448 on-base percentage.

Past Oriole stars give Gilman Clinic panache

The list of guest speakers is an Orioles Who's Who from the 1980s and 1990s: Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr; 1981 All-Star pitcher Scott McGregor, who threw a shutout in Game 5 to clinch the 1983 World Series for the Orioles; B.J. Surhoff, a 1999 All-Star selection, who did everything but pitch.

And that's just the beginning of the cast that will take part in the Gilman Baseball Coaching Clinic on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the school's Redmond C.S. Finney Athletic Center beginning at 8:30 a.m..

Also speaking will be Billy Ripken, a 12-year major league veteran whose fielding percentage at second base was .982; and Tim Bishop, the Orioles strength and conditioning coach for 14 years.

And Larry Sheets, the Orioles' 1987 Most Valuable Player and the current Gilman baseball coach.

Athletic director Timothy Holley says all are welcome and part of the money raised from the clinic will be used to fund the Gilman baseball team's spring trip. The deadline for early entry is Saturday, Feb. 6.

"This will be Larry's first year coaching for us," said Holley. "We were 3-16 last year and couldn't wait to fire the last coach. As soon as the last out of last season was called I turned to myself and said, 'You're fired!' And then we hired Larry, who was already assisting with the program."

Holley said the Gilman squad should be very good this season, having started four freshmen, a sophomore and four juniors last year.

"We were young, but we also had a lot of talent," Holley said. "We hope to be a lot better and competitive. I think it will be a very exciting season. Calvert Hall, St. Joe and Spalding are always strong, but we might surprise some people."

With Sheets, Gilman also gets a physical education teacher and an assistant strength coach, not to mention a well-connected former professional player.

"It should be a very interesting clinic," said Holley. "And any adult interested in baseball is welcome."

So if you love baseball and old Orioles, this just might be the place to be Feb. 13.

To register, mail your name, address, organization, phone number and e-mail address to Gilman Baseball, 5407 Roland Ave., Baltimore, Md., 21210, and include a check for $70 payable to Larry Sheets Baseball Inc.

Entry can also be had at the door on the day of the clinic for $80.

The Next Level -- men's basketball roundup for Feb. 1

Another week of college basketball is behind us, and the calendar now reads “February.” That, of course, means that March – the best month of the year if you’re a college hoops fan – is almost upon us. From the looks of things, there are some players from the Baltimore area who are warming up for when the Madness starts.

This past week’s top five men’s performers include some of the usual suspects, as Massachusetts’ Ricky Harris (Calvert Hall), Morgan State’s Reggie Holmes (St. Frances), New Mexico State’s Jahmar Young (Du Bois) and Virginia Tech’s Malcolm Delaney (Towson Catholic) repeated their tendency to score in bunches.

Harris scored 24.0 points per game, grabbed 6.0 rebounds per game and recorded 2.0 steals per game over two contests. Holmes averaged 22.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals, as well as going a combined 13-for-18 from the foul line, over a pair of games. Young went for 19 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals in his only game of the week. Delaney went for averages of 21.5 points and 4.0 assists in 39.0 minutes over two contests.

Holmes’ Bears teammate Troy Smith (Douglass) makes his debut in The Next Level’s weekly top five. He averaged 16.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals in two games.

Mount St. Joseph's Clatchey will take regular-season crowns any day

When Mount St. Joseph boys basketball coach Pat Clatchey was asked what the difference was in the final key minutes of his No. 1 Gaels' 69-68 win at No. 2 St. Frances on Sunday, he didn't hesitate with a reply.

"What was at stake, to be honest," he said.

With the win, the Gaels (26-2) clinched the Baltimore Catholic League regular-season title with an 11-0 mark, and they have a stranglehold on the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference at 12-0.

No. 3 Calvert Hall and No. 2 St. Frances both have two MIAA losses.

"I tell our guys all the time, I think the regular-season championship is the true championship," Clatchey added. "The playoffs, those are nice and we're going to try to win those, but you look at the regular season and you have to protect your home court and go on the road and win -- it's over a duration of games. In the playoffs, somebody gets in foul trouble or somebody gets hot and anything can happen."

Once the playoffs do arrive, the Gaels have firmly established themselves as the team to beat in what originally appeared to be a dead-even, three-team race with Calvert Hall and St. Frances as the other viable candidates.

Strong senior leadership from point guard Eric Atkins and forward Ryley Beaumont -- both have been a model of consistency all season -- and a talented group around them that plays well together have given the Gaels a slight edge from the other teams.
