A look ahead at football polls
The Baltimore Sun's Varsity fall-season preview comes out Wednesday, Sept. 2, featuring players to watch, polls and more for football, boys and girls soccer, field hockey, volleyball, and boys and girls cross country.
But while you wait, high school sports Web site MDVarsity.com released its state football preseason media poll Tuesday. Powerhouse DeMatha heads up the Top 25, garnering 11 of 12 first-place votes from reporters state-wide. Local schools in the top 10 include Gilman (No. 4), Arundel (No. 5) and Loyola (No. 10), the defending Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champion.
Two of last year's state champions, River Hill (Class 2A) and Dunbar (Class 1A), follow at Nos. 11 and 12, respectively. Old Mill, Mount St. Joseph and Hereford are 18th, 19th and 20th. Class 2A state runner-up Eastern Tech is ranked 23rd.

As I look at these "State High School" polls, I always ask, "Where are the schools from the Eastern Shore?" Are they that bad?? But they can't be because there were some very good schools and players (besides the 1 that played in that so called "Crab Bowl" or whatever its called).
So what's with the Eastern Shore bias Baltimore Sun?? The Eastern Shore is very part much of Maryland and has some outstanding teams as well as talent. Is it because of the Bay Bridge traffic that you folks can't get off of your duffs and go and check out football on the E. Shore?
And you wonder why Pennsylvainia now plays the Big 33 against Ohio

Response from Steve Gould:
Walt, as stated in the blog post, this poll is not a Baltimore Sun poll. MDVarsity.com presents the poll, as voted on by reporters state-wide. Sun reporters do not take part in the voting.
As for the Baltimore Sun's poll (the initial one for the season comes out Wednesday, Sept. 2), only teams from Baltimore City and Baltimore, Howard, Anne Arundel, Harford and Carroll counties are considered. It is not meant to be a state-wide poll.

The Eastern Shore does have good teams but just doesnt have the amount of students that Central Maryland has. And, last time I checked, the best sports school on the Eastern Shore, Stephen Decatur, was beaten by a Harford County upstart in Fallston in last year's playoffs.
