Ravens rumors: Pennington, Henne and Flacco
Let me first preface this post by saying you should take everything you hear the rest of the week with a grain of salt.
Teams are intentionally leaking material to reporters and providing misinformation. It's all part of the process.
That being said, we are all football fans, so usually it's fun to chase the rumors even if they're unlikely to be true.
Which brings us to JetsConfidential.com, a site that is part of the scout.com network. Dan Leberfeld is reporting that the Ravens could be interested in trading for Chad Pennington if the Jets select Matt Ryan with the No. 6 pick:
If the Jets pick Ryan, according to the rumor, which can't be substantiated, the Jets would then trade Pennington to the Ravens. What the Jets would get in return from the Ravens is unclear. Perhaps a second round.
This seems about as far-fetched a rumor as you're going to see. I'm not sure what acquiring Pennington would accomplish for the Ravens, especially given his injury history. And for a second-round pick? I don't see it.
Meanwhile, SI.com's Peter King seems convinced that the Ravens are going to end up with Michigan quarterback Chad Henne, and that he'd be a good fit:
My feeling on Henne is that no other quarterback in this draft is as prepared to step into a situation like Baltimore's. The Ravens still have the pieces to make a playoff run, just 16 months after a 13-3, playoff-bye season. All that's missing is quarterback competency. In the wake of Steve McNair's retirement last week --and there was no guarantee he'd have started this year anyway -- Baltimore is left with Kyle Boller and Troy Smith at quarterback. Neither is the organization's preferred long-term starter. Whoever is drafted would be expected to come into camp this year with a chance to play, and perhaps start.
And finally, ESPN draft analysts Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr. were asked earlier today where Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco is going to end up. Guess what they said? That's right. Both said the Ravens. McShay added that he's been told that some within the Ravens' organization like Flacco better than Ryan.
So there are the latest rumors. Good thing we only have a few more days until the actual draft.

Comments
I may be in the minority here, but I do not want the team to draft Matt Ryan. I would much rather see the team take a corner with the first pick and then use the second pick on who ever is left of Brohm, Flacco, or Henne.
If we took Ryan with the first pick, the second round corners do not seem ready to step right in and play significant minutes.

I do like Henne in round 2 a whole lot more than Ryan at 8.
I first remeber thinking Chad would be a great NFL QB when he played Quinn and ND and waxed them. He threw 2 of the sweetest deep passes to Manningham I ever saw a college guy throw, and Quinn was just running for his life most of the day.
I came to find out the M Defense was so much better than ND, that sort of tipped the scales, but Henne was just a Jr and Quinn was the heisman poster boy.
I still think we are in great shape at the QB position. We have 2 potential starters, or at least decent back ups at cheap back up money, and a lot of draftable prospects.
There is also the Cullpepper option after the draft. I know he and Cam have had some issues, but he has at least looked at the playbook and been to a few practices before Cam kicked him off his sinking ship.
His knee seems to be healed, and if he can put points up for the Raiders, he can do it here if we need him.

Culpepper? nah, I don't see, or WANT that to happen. to many problems with it.

I'd rather see them draft Lebron James and try developing him as an NFL player than waste a 2nd round pick on Pennington. I know this is only a rumor so I'm going to hope this is the last I hear about this. Ever.

I have been saying this since Jan. Henne is our guy. I don't believe in the hype that is Matt Ryan, and he may turn out to be a great qb but there is just to much of a risk to take. So we should take Henne either 2nd round or trade back into the 1st round and draft Henne later in the 1st round.

There is no way we are getting Henne or Flacco if we stay where we are at #2. We are going to have to trade up from our #2 spot, or trade back from #1. It just aint gonna happen.

Inasmuch as it's a total crapshoot anyway, I'd rather we pass on Ryan (think he's overhyped), take a corner with our first pick, and - like Jimmy said - pick up Flacco or Henne with our #2.
Not a huge Brohm believer, maybe it's because I live in West Virginia now and I've seen too many Mountaineer/Louisville games where an underwhelming Mountaineer d-line made him look foolish.
However, when it's all said and done, history makes me trust Ozzie.

I'm not thrilled with Matt Ryan either. I watched him play a lot in college. He forces the ball too much. If he tries that in the NFL they will end up as a pick 6.
I like either Brohm or Flacco in the second round and either McKeldin or Clady in the first round.

I was skeptical at first but I am convinced now the Ravens should take Henne as our QB. I can possibly see the Ravens trade there #8 pick to Dallas for there 2 first round picks.

Saturday really can't get here fast enough. LOL.

For starters, Kyle Boller is a better QB than Chad Pennington. That's not knocking Mr. Pennington...it's just the truth. Pennington probably needs a fresh start with another team...just not the Ravens. We don't need to be wasting draft picks on more trades for washed up players, no Pennington, no Culpepper. Sorry.
We can go ahead and spend a second round pick on another QB in this draft, if nothing else to provide depth at that position, but fact of the matter is, whoever is drafted WILL NOT be starting for the Ravens, unless Boller AND Smith go down during the season. Harbaugh said that any rookie coming in is going to have a tough time beating Boller and Smith for the starting job, and he's right. Boller is now in his sixth year in the NFL, that makes him a veteran, and whether some people want to recognize it or not, he's a pretty talented veteran who has come a long way in a weak offensive system. Now that he has a (hopefully) much more wide open system to work within, he will no doubt wind up looking a LOT better on the field, provided we can get our o-line in order.
And then there's Troy Smith, the hot shot rookie we JUST GOT last year, who we are STILL in the process of developing...and I think it would be a waste, not to mention a slap in the face to him personally, to bring in ANOTHER rookie that we expect to pass over him to be our starter. No....we're just fine with Boller and Smith, and if we play our cards right on offense (for once), either one of those guys could take us to the playoffs.

Ryan is the only franchise pick of the QB's in this draft. The Ravens need to step up and make it happen this time! So far they have not proved they can draft a star QB, regardless of the excuses. Boller did not do it on the field in competition with a low completion percentage in college and they wasted a number one draft pick to trade up for him.

Chad Pennington!!!!????.......lost it....everyone has lost it........thats insane!!.....he was done 3 years ago............why would we pick him up if the lowly jets don't even want him.........???

Jets want our 2nd round pick for Chad Pennington? Im not even sure if i would take him if he was free agent.
Thanks but no thanks
Ryan is a franchise QB? I dont think so . Ryan looks like 2nd round QB to me , let the other team roll the dice on him. He is not worth the risk and cost . We got too many needs to waste our precious picks on Ryan. Ryan just happen to benefit from weak QB class . If Henne , Brohm , Flacco available at our 2nd round , that would be safer risk.
