Ravens add Rutgers RB Rice

With the 24th pick in the second round (No. 55 overall), the Ravens added Rutgers running back Ray Rice.

Rice, 5 feet 8 and 199 pounds, had 2,012 yards and 24 touchdowns as a junior last season. He was a true workhorse, piling up 380 carries, second-most in the nation. Rice had 335 carries as a sophomore in 2006. According to ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr., Rice runs a 4.42 40-yard dash.

Here's a YouTube clip of Rice

The Sun's breakdown of Rice:

2007 rushing statistics: 2,012 yards, 380 carries, 24 touchdowns.

Strengths: Excelled in big games. Got better each season. Durable.

Weaknesses: Size. He could take a beating, but if used right could provide a good 1-2 punch with Willis McGahee. Wasn't asked to catch the ball much out of the backfield. Had just 37 catches in three seasons.

Four points:

1) Did Ozzie get snookered ? Since Brohm & Henne were taken so late, could Flacco have been taken with our original 2nd rd pick ? Yes, i know that we'll never know for sure but it looks like we may have done those first round maneuvers for nothing and in the process given up a high 1st rd pick.

2) We didn't get back enough value for the 8th pick in the first rd.

3) I hate the trade with Seattle giving up a high 2nd rd pick & getting back a low 2nd & a low 3rd rd pick.

4) The Ray Rice pick may be the worst 2nd rd pick that i've seen. He's small & SLOWWWWWWW.

good job guys keep up the good work.now let's the young guys play thier ready.

Bad,Bad,BAD not good at all,

Dave,
Rice is a great pick. He will prove you wrong.

first of all we will never know about the flacco pick but put it this way we gotta great qb prospect and after the trade still had 1 more pick plus whatever we got for trading with seattle which is more then we started out with today...

ray rice was a great pick if you think hes slow tune in next year and youll be eating those words when him and mcgahee are one of the best pair in the nfl...

go ravens!

Why in the world did they draft a RB in the 2ND round when they need a CB? I hope they aren't counting on Cory Ivy and Frank Walker. Justin King was sitting right there for the friggin' taking. There were better players on the board that the Ravens should've taken. RB was not that BIG of a need. CB is. Hopefully, they'll address it in the next round.

Ray Rice isn't a terrible player. He is really good. Just didn't need to take in the second round of the draft. The Ravens could've gotten Kevin Smith in the latter rounds who is similar to Rice, but bigger. Rice isn't slow. He just doesn't have blazing speed or top-end speed. But he is fast and elusive. Will be a good back up. Too early of a RB selection, IMO.

It amazes me that after so many years of great drafting, folks still doubt this front office which only has two blemishes on their drafting resume over an entire decade(Boller, Travis Taylor).

What people seem to forget so easily is that we have young defensive backs. The problem was that we had a coach who did not believe in giving MOST young guys playing time unless he absolutely had to. Look at Pittman for example. Everyone was wondering when he would get time. He had a rough first game or so, because IT WAS HIS FIRST GAME. After that, he settled in and did well. Ronnie Prude has always had great ball instincts. Though he is more of a safety, he has the skill to make the move to CB. We have young guys there(Martin I refuse to count). Sure we could definitely use another, but look at our RB position.

We do not have anyone behind McGahee(Anderson was released and I forget what happened to Smith). We have an offensive line that has proven it can run block with the best of them and has yet to prove that it can pass block with the best of them. We are either going to have Boller, a second year quarterback, or a first year quarterback starting for us. Ray Rice, I saw this past year. He is a quality RB. We are going to need him if our QBs are going to spend most of the time on their backs otherwise. Everyone, just play it cool. Let us not forget Bart Scott and Adalius Thomas. This front office knows what it is doing when it comes to drafting.

Ray Rice "Has a lot of mileage on his tires" http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/rb/rayrice.html

Wheareas McFadden/Jones, as well as Dickerson/James, split duties.

He was rated the 75th rhttp://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/042508dnspodrafttop100.96c05034.html and we took him with the 55th pick.

I don't know. I am as big a supporter of Ozzie as anyone, believe me. Even I have to say, to see what transpired today makes me pause. It seems like we out-thunk ourselves, and I know I'm not the only one who feels that way. To come out of the first day of the draft without a CB, O-lineman or even a WR... I mean all that maneuvering to "snag" Flacco? I really think we could have had him later, and still come up with a top prospect to impact the defense. Ray Rice may be a decent back, but that could've been addressed tomorrow. If you're going to ignore the secondary, why not go after a playmaker like Sweed or Jackson at WR for your new QB to develop with?

I'll say this - after tomorrow, I'm supporting the moves 100% - In Oz I Trust, and I know DeCosta and the rest will find value tomorrow with all those picks. This just did not turn out the way I anticipated AT ALL.

We all need to show some patience. These are two solid picks- and we need serious help on offense. With 9 more picks tomorrow is going to be a VERY good day. I'm looking for a CB, WR, and I think they may take a flier on a Josh Johnson or even Dennis Dixon to energize the QB competition. Go Ravens- Beat Pittsburgh.

Doug,

Our offensive line can run-block w/the best of them? What games have you been watching? Our Oline is pathetic at run blocking. Hopefully that'll change since we got rid of that sorry excuse of an Oline coach Chris Foerster. But as long as we keep drafting "finesse" linemen like Adam Terry & Chris Chester, the problem will remain.

Question #1: Did we improve our 2008 squad with these two picks? I think the answer is a resouding "NO." We added a QB that may not play for a year or more, and depth at the RB spot. Rds 1&2 are for starters, rds 3-7 are for depth/prospects. Ozzie better find some starters today, or this draft is a mild bust.
Question #2: How much of our past draft success was due to Phil Savage?

Leave the drafting to the professionals. Newsome has done a great job overall.

Raymond Berry was 'too slow' also.

Jon S,

EXACTLY, kudos to you on both points.

This pick was a little shocking at first but it is a great pick. We needed someone behind McGahee and he was damn good in college, he is a very good complement back to
McGahee.

People are right that McGahee needs a backup. It didn't need to be filled with the only 2nd rd pick they had when had 3 picks in the 3rd rd.

Dave,

Rice was listed as high as the #2 RB on some boards, and quite a few listed him as a 1st Round Talent. I've seen him myself, and the knocks on him don't stick. I was actually upset Baltimore got him because he deserves to be a starting RB in the NFL, not a 3rd down back.
