NHL waiver wire

With most fantasy hockey playoffs starting now -- or soon -- it's time to start winding this puppy down. For animal activists, no puppies were hurt in the making of this article -- it's just a saying.

Tom Poti, D (WAS): Seven points in seven games will get you noticed as a defenseman, which is why Tom Poti has been one of the most added players this week. Poti can be an offensive defenseman -- or was last year when he notched the second-highest point total in his career (44) -- but had only 17 points for the entire season prior to this hot streak. He doesn't help out much in other categories outside of pure points.

Craig Anderson, G (FLA): It's the year of the backup goalie in the NHL as many of them are crawling out of the woodwork to show that they are not quite finished. Craig Anderson, who never really had life to begin with, has been showing some moxie recently and is getting added. He's on a four-game winning streak, allowing only three goals in that span (two shutouts). At this point, why wouldn't you add him if you are in a bind in net? The Panthers have Tomas Vokoun and are showing faith in him -- you should too.

Eric Ersberg, G (LA): Eric Ersberg has been another hot add after the undrafted Swedish rookie shut out the Ottawa Senators last week. Ersberg, who doesn't have a player profile page at Yahoo or ESPN, is now the only real option in Los Angeles now that Jason LaBarbera is out for the season. Realistically, you aren't going to get wins from him but his goals against average and save percentage have presented value.

Alex Burrows, F (VAN): The Vancouver Canucks don't score often but one guy who has been putting the biscuit in the basket has been Alex Burrows. In four games in March, Burrows already has 14 penalty minutes. That's expected from him -- what isn't expected is the five points and +4 rating. He's even thrown in a short-handed goal. Go get this guy -- at worst he'll help you with PIMs but there's moderate upside across the board.

Dustin Byfuglien, D (CHI): Dustin Byfuglien -- gesundheit -- has been the latest streaking Chicago Blackhawks defenseman, which means he's worth glancing at. Byfuglien has four points in March (three on the power play) with six penalty minutes. Don't go overboard but if you have a D-man who's holding your team back, click away.

Andrew Ladd, F (CAR): Would I be doing something stupid if I recommended Andrew Ladd? If you looked at his stats from the first three months of the season, then you'd think so. But in the last two months, Ladd has been solid. Over the last 18 games he has 16 points (three on the power play) and is a +11. That's not bad. Left wing is one of the weakest positions in fantasy sports, so Ladd is already worth a look. In deeper leagues, he should be owned.
