Sterling Gibbs makes his decision
Sterling Gibbs will play his college basketball in the Big 12.
The former Maryland point guard signee, who was released from his letter of intent Thursday, revealed his new college destination on Twitter Monday night.
University of Texas Longhorns.. I'm ready baby!!
Gibbs took an official visit to Austin over the weekend. After reopening his recruitment, the three-star prospect from Seton Hall Prep (N.J.) also received interest from Connecticut, Louisville, Notre Dame, Providence, Seton Hall, Texas Tech and Xavier.
New Maryland coach Mark Turgeon landed a point guard commitment Saturday when Fredericksburg (Va.) Christian junior Seth Allen committed to the Terps.

I don't think anyone is going to lose any sleep over this one. Much, much more important that we keep Faust and Breunig in the fold.

I find the silence from Faust a little disconcerting, especially when we kept his lead recruiter, Ranson. Do we have any indication on what he is thinking?
Also, I noticed that Joseph Uchebo reopened his recruitment last month. a 6'10, 240 pound center sure would be nice. Any chance we could get in on him?
Andrew: We should know something on Faust this week. The silence is probably a good thing for Maryland. Not sure on Uchebo. -- Matt

This guy knew he wouldn't play with Stoglin and Howard there. Good riddance Mr. Three Star. Go sit on the bench in Texas. Take Mike Jones (I mean Nick Faust) with you.

What's with the nastiness, terpfan? Sterling was a class act through the whole process and made a decision that he thought was best for him. Can't blame him.
And we definitely don't want him taking Faust with him ... we need Nick big-time. He's going to be a player.

People get "stupid" when it comes to players asking out of their LOI when there is a change.
Sure, it proves that the school itself had NOTHING to do with the pledge in the 1st place, but, these kids, especially out of high school, all think they are going pro.
However, to say "take faust with you" is so stupid.
The kid hasn't said anything yet. Gibbs wasn't going to play, and I don't think Turgeon really cared if he stayed or not. He would rather have those extra scholarships in 2012.
I have criticized MD as hard as anyone. I want EVERY top 50 recruit we can get. Faust is just that.
We want Faust. Trust me. The more shooters you have, the better. In the current college game.

You guys have NO idea who's going to be a player. Gibbs could turn out to be a really good player and Faust a bust...or vice verca. Perhaps they both stink. Mosely and Parker were top 50 players. Are they any good? We know Mosely stinks and Parker couldn't get off the bench as a Freshman. Perhaps you should say "it would seem that Faust has the potential to be a good player based on the limited footage I've seen and what I've read" Does he work hard? Do you know his mental make up? Faust couldn't even win the state title this year. That's concerning for a top 50 player. It's not like they played Montrose for the championship.

terpfan & matt--
you are way off base. the team definitely needs faust. both as a contributing player and as a statement to the baltimore/dc community. he's a top 50-75 player. comparison's between city and montrose? a large number of the kids at montrose are getting looks and offers from D1 schools. city is not.
gibbs changed his mind and while we would prefer to have them all as terps you have to respect his decision.

good ones ... good callout by dave to terpfan. terpfan sounds bitter more then anything. dopey comments from terpfan (r u really). matt is spot on...noone knows who will do what, top 50, bottom 50 yada yada yada. gary w made a great living putting teams together with his choices. might be a harder way too earn a living, but it can workout. i really dont put much trust in the "experts" picks. who knows!!! i'll let the coaches figure that out and i'll show up for the games.

I'm not surprised at all by the negative comments coming from the so called fan base.
The Sun rarely gives the teams decent coverage.
The fans don't show up to support the teams and then the comments from the fans are without exception negative 99% of the time.
It is rare to see the people in the state of MD get behind the Terps.
Typical fairweather MD area fans. Pick your sport they only support you when the teams are winning. If any of the teams struggle they throw them under the bus and then stomp on their neck.
All John Harbaugh and Joe Flacco have done is go to the playoffs their first three years in their respective positions and people in B'More rip them on a regualr basis, even when they win.
Worst fans in America.
Philadelphia may be full of punks but they show up and support their teams.

WOW. The amount of negativism is amazing. Some of you need to get a more relaxing hobby.
Everything I heard or read about Sterling was always very positive - nice young man with a solid game. With only eight scholarship players returning and Stogs & Howard not expected to play every minute of every game as our 1-2, maybe we could have used Gibbs.
His decision to ask for his release was OK with me. He was recruited by a coach who retired. He wanted to look at his options again. All bets off - contract null and void. Just like the real world.
No way to know if MT was interested in keeping Sterling or not. We'll likely never know. Is his first recruit an indication? Maybe.
But for anyone, any "fan" to spew negative comments about a 17 yr old kid they dont even know - how cowardly and ridiculous. Good luck at Texas Sterling, play well. Sorry things didnt work out here.
IMHO Faust is likely the one recruit MT wants to keep. Highly rated talent where we have a need - perimeter shooting. Like Parker however, there are no guarantees that Faust is ready to step right in and play now. Hopefully MT can keep him and he's as good as rated.
And hopefully MT can develop Parker as well.
As far as the negative comments tossed at Sean Mosely by Matt - who is the one who evidently doesnt know what he is talking about.
While Sean may not be the scorer you expected him to be, he's as dedicated and hard working a player as we've had. He's been asked for three years to play out of position and defend against taller faster competition. He never stops hustling and giving everything he has every minute of every game. Couldnt be prouder to call him a Terp and look forward to him having an outstanding senior year.

The bottom line is the assistant who recruited Gibbs is gone so that was like saying to Gibbs, get your things packed and find some place else to play. Good luck but we need to make room for the next round coming up in spring. The most noticeable thing Turge has done is reach out to the local talent. He's already planning for the future by building a foundation.

This post is full of Chicken Littles. Turgeon has been on the job a week. When your retiring coach is Gary Williams, it's understandable that the recruit may want to re-evaluate. It's clear that Turgeon has taken big steps on the local scene ALREADY to be sure we can keep our top kids here.
As for Gibbs and Faust, I think we always wanted Faust more. NJ is in Big East Country and probably doesn't play many ACC games. If he picked MD for proximity and that didn't work, why not go to Texas? Probably the biggest name program still pursuing him and Rick Barnes is a former Gary assistant.
Nick, you can be the sparkplug for this Terp team. Your coach is committed to bringing Baltimore basketball back to the national scene behind "Terps" jerseys. You sign and I think you can win a National Championship.

I agree, these negative comments about 17 year old kids are disturbing. Each has a right to do what they believe is in their best interest. The fact that Maryland is in this situation reflects poorly on Gary Williams and his lackluster recruiting efforts the last few years. If you can't stand the heat, then you should get out of the kitchen. At least he had the sense to retire and quit hurting the program because he didn't want to play the recruiting game. Next year will be a long season for Maryland. However, MT can focus his efforts in bringing in a top 2012 class to get the program rolling. Bottom line is the cupboard was pretty bare and that's why Gary left. His whole 2011/12 season was predicated on Jordan Williams returning and when that didn't happen, he decided he had enough. Now don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Gary's. He did great things with the program. But it is clear he was getting tired of doing it for 22 years. He looked burned out. Roy Williams' first year at UNC was terrible, and the next year they were back to being the beast of the ACC. Expect the same here.

In recent years we've seen local guys like Durant and Carmelo go one and done with bigtime NBA careers thereafter. Now Selby is trying to do that too. On every local playground, kids are pretending they're the next Melo or Durant. Faust seems more grounded but he's also physically immature at a purported 6'6" and 170Lbs. Wherever he goes, he's likely not going to be an impact player his first year or two. Sure he can hit the jumper but lots of college guys are 6'4" and can put a body on him restricting his shot. While on D he won't be much of a factor against big shooting gurads. He proved to be a good player at City but could not take a high school game over. Just not there yet. How's he gonna matchup in the ACC? I hope he goes somewhere that will enable him to grow and become a better player, and a better man. Turgeon could mold him but there are lots of coaches that will bury him and forget about it.

Gibbs is not going to play at TX right away either because he is going to be behind Kabongo for at least a year or two. I am not surprised because it looks like Ehsan is not being retained, and not surprised if the German fella is gone too because I think Booth recruited him.
Its Turgeon's responsibility to fill the void if there is one left by Gibbs, and I think he already has by Allen's committment.
I would be surprised if Faust does not recommitt. He is local guy, and has an opportunity to contribute a lot from day one on this team.

Terps 06, yes, saying Mosely stinks is harsh. He doesn't stink. If he did he wouldn't be playing for Md. He is a role player, who does the unnoticed intangibles. However, folks here and everywhere get way too excited about a top 50 player, which he CLEARLY is not. If Faust turns out to be Mosely, then that's a loss for us, especiallly for a top 50 recruit. That being said, I still would really like to see Faust play for MD- being the local kid and all. Perhaps he could be a poor mans Juan Dixon, but again, not sure how hard he works. I like is shooting and length at his position. Will that translate to the college level. NOBODY knows. He seems a little limited athletically.

Terps '06,
So Mosley has been asked for 3 years to defend against taller AND faster competition ? How does that work ? So you're saying he should be Division II ?
Perhaps u r correct - he did have a great game against Longwood. Short, slow, and no shooting touch or ball handling not ideal for ACC. Even a watered down ACC

TGC3RD,
Did I just read that you can only complain if you show up? Because we all know that NO fan base complains more than Philly. They rip on everything! Even Santa! But you are saying that is ok because they show up Hmmm ....and which on of their teams has had years of struggling?
The people that scream the loudest like to see their name in print here...that's all. The Ravens and Terps have plenty of support. The supporters just don't need to see their name in print to feel good about themselves and their level of support.
I agree that the Ravens get ripped here too often. But that's is what fans do when they don't win it all...they gripe and complain and act as though they know more than the coaches and the GM's.
Philly fans think they know it all...you should be very used to that mentality.

mosley reminds me so much of byron mouton ... i would take either of these guys on my team anyday...oh, and all byron did was help to win a national championship. obvious to me its a team sport and he made an awsome contribution. anyday ....

Matt-
They are saying Faust should recommit tonight. Hill has accepted the job, and Bino is staying, so I guess that was all they were waiting on?
Can you confirm this?
Ryan: I don't know about tonight for Faust. But I think it's inevitable. -- Matt

I have seen all the comments and I my opinion is this. It is more important to the future of the Team to secure the right coaches than any one player. Recruiting has always been our undoing. If we could get our own area talent we would be top 10 every year. Baltimore has great talent and so does DC , PG and lower VA. Delonte Hill or one of the current area AAU coaches should be our #1 target.
Posted by: ThomasW | May 17, 2011 3:18 PM
ok sterling - you made your decision but man, you should have just waited another day. you'll be sorry ....
Posted by: pepper | May 17, 2011 4:57 PM
It didn't surprise me that Gibbs left. What did surprise me is why would he want to go to Texas?
Rick Barnes has had a ton of talent and highly ranked teams down there for a while but they never do anything in the post season? His Clemson teams did the same thing. Start strong and then peter out?
As someone who lived in the southwest, Texas is football first, spring football second with basketball way down the list just below high school football.
Enjoy Texas Sterling! Happy Landings!

Pepper,
I REALLY like the Byron Mouton analogy for Mosley. All BM did was hustle and get every loose ball, tip passes, etc. Mosley has a little less to work with (no Blake, Dixon, Wilcox or Baxter) but has made all Terp fans proud watching him hustle. I'm disappointed that he can't seem to knock down the open "J", but all that means is he won't be playing at the next level...he is a contributor for the Terps and FAR from an embarrassment.
