Nick Faust 'starting off fresh' with Terps
Nick Faust had a favorable impression of Maryland coach Mark Turgeon based on a couple of phone conversations, but it was an in-person meeting Tuesday night that led to the City shooting guard reaffirming his commitment to the Terps.
“He’s just a well-spoken guy,” Faust said Tuesday night. “He accepted me and I accepted him. He’s just a great person overall. We kind of just blended right together.”
Faust and fellow Terps commitment Sterling Gibbs asked out of their letters of intent last Thursday, one day after Maryland introduced Turgeon as its new coach.
Gibbs, a 6-foot-1 point guard from Seton Hall Prep (N.J.), committed to Texas on Monday. But Faust said Turgeon made it clear from the beginning that he was a top priority. Still, the 6-foot-5 senior thought it would be best to at least have the option of exploring other college possibilities.
“The dead period starts [Wednesday], so that was on my mind throughout the whole process,” Faust said. “I had my mind open for everyone. Once I got in with Coach [Turgeon], I thought it was the best place for me.”
Turgeon told Faust, a first-team Baltimore Sun All-Metro selection, that he will play the 1, 2 and 3 for the Terps. The coach’s plans for Faust are similar to how Gary Williams would have used him. Faust, who averaged 22 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Knights this season, said he can’t wait to get started.
“Maryland is brand new, starting off fresh,” Faust said. “Basically, I’ll be a big part of that. Coach Turgeon wants to win a national championship. That’s my goal also. I’ll play a big part in that process.”

I have a very good feeling Nick Faust is gonna be a fan favorite right away. Great to officially have you on board Nick!

Faust is not an ACC player b.c he plays with no heart... Saw him when he was a John Carroll and he was no match for the MIAA. 2 points... 1. If you can't hang in the MIAA you can't hang in the ACC 2. Did you see what JC did without him this year? MD would have been better off if he went somewhere else b/c he's soft

@Bill:
Regardless of whether you believe Faust is an ACC-caliber player or not, he's a recruit MD had to keep. Perception is reality. Losing yet another highly regarded homegrown recruit would continue to raise questions about the program and its direction. GW did his best to lead this program in his own way, the best way he saw fit, and never heard the end of it regarding his inability to land the local blue-chips. Coach Turgeon doesn't need to start his UMD career with that kind of static.

Keeping Faust is huge. Bill, get a clue. The guy is a legit scorer that the terps desperately need. A future team of Faust, Stoglin, Justin Anderson, and Cleare/another big from the 2012 class is a deep NCAA tourney team.

nice attitude Bill! good way to welcome a new recruit. Did you play B-ball in high school? I would tend to think so, because as they say, it takes one to know one! Isn't that true Mr. Softie?

What was he a freshman or soph.at JC. All I have to say is Bill stick to your day job,because you can't tell talent!

@Bill-You might be correct but isn't that's why they tell these kids to stay in college longer....to improve weaknesses???? Maybe he tested the waters and saw MD was his best choice. In hs these kids think they're 'stars" until they get on a college team full of former hs All Americans.....

We don't need Gibbs now that we picked up Allen for next year. They are the same size, same type players, basically 1A and 1B. Faust however, would have been near impossible to replace for this year, so late in the process. Still going to miss Jordan Williams, though.

@Bill...i respect ur opionion of him at JC, but he finished his career at CITY...no way you can compete in baltimore city public school league with no heart..this is the INNER CITY we talkin about..what he didnt have at JC im SURE he has it now...more importantly, why are we not talkin about the #23 ranked player in the NATION who committed to the TERPS yesterday from Montrose Christian...ALL ABOARD for the bandwagon will get heavy soon

I do not understand why previous commits did not stay with Maryland. It is obvious that this group of coaches goal is to recruit and win. Under the previous staff and since they won the NCAA, Maryland made the sweet sixteen once and missed the tournament 4 times in nine years.
Gary: I don't know that the new regime pursued Gibbs and Breunig as vigorously as it did Faust. -- Matt

@Bill
When he was at JC he was young with Talent. I watched him mature at my alma mater (CITY) and led them to two State Titles. He competed across the country with the Nike Elite squads and dominated. Dont make a observation based off of what you saw three years ago. You've proven why you arent a good recruiter.

Bill,
While I recognize your poorly made point that Faust may not be the superstar that he's made out to be, he most certainly is a divison 1 shooter and scorer from the outside, of this I have no doubt after seeing him more than several times. He is the kind of player who needs to get warmed up or make a big play early to spur him on. With the shot, it's so clean that even in an off game, he'll have a streak of several made in a row. He's not a great get, but a better than solid one who will help the point total per game. If a rebound can be kicked to him quickly, he's excellent waiting with his feet set. His attacking skills from the wings MOST CERTAINLY improved from John Carroll and I have no idea why anyone would call him soft. There have been games where he finished over people with one and two hands right at the rim and I saw him drive on a larger PF, obviously positioned to take a charge, and Faust finger-rolled it with ease while absorbing the contact. If you think that's soft you are foolish. We can all smell a snobbish Duke fan. Don't be mad because Terps have the headlines and K Irving is leaving.....

Matt, What's the latest on Breunig? Do the coaches want him? Is he still considering MD? Thanks.
CA Terp Fan: I haven't heard back from his coaches, which is probably an indication of a lack of interest. InsideMdSports tweeted that there has been "little contact" between the two parties. -- Matt

Don't know about Faust's "heart" or why he went to City ....but he was a sorley needed piece to the "new" Terps puzzle. I never knew "city hoop players" to lack heart, not from what I experienced in my youth playing B'ball in N. Carolina and in this area.
The young man is from this area, is a top 40 rated player ( from what I've seen and heard in the news ) and UM definitely needs some outside shooters...who can play 2 or 3 court positions.
I doubt Turgeon will get every one of the future "blue chip" players in this area. It is all about supply and demand when dealing with these youngster's and their picture of playing time. It sure is a good start though and I like the new coaching staff. Nothing wrong with the other former assistants, but it's time to get people in here who know how to deal with these AAU programs and get closer to the area HS coaches.
There is too much basketball talent to let slip away year after year in this area. And I'm not just talking about the Baltimore and DC corridor. I'm talking the whole East Coast ! And these AAU programs have all of these kids in their camps....so you have to deal with them.
I'm sure it's not always a great thing and once you get a bad rap, as a College coach or you have disagreements with one or several of these AAU coaches? Well, the news floats around, and then the news floats around ....some more.
Good luck to Mark Turgeon and his new staff. Love the Hill hiring, because he knows the "ins and outs" of the amateur circuit in this area!!! I would have figured that his former top assistant would be coming, once A&M named a new coach. So good luck to coaches Spinelli, Hill and Ranson !
And good luck to the former assistants and to Gary Williams. I'm glad he will still be around Terp athletics, because he brought back , from a moribund situation, restored it's integrity and kept it that way for 2 decades. I'm sure he believes that Coach Turgeon, can keep it going and maybe even raise the bar. And Turgeon has youth on his side, too !!!!! I will miss Williams though, but he isn't a "spring chicken" anymore and he had some great moments in these last 22 years.

C'mon down (or up) Arnaud Adala-Moto!!!

I wouldn't give up on Anderson immediately. Unless he has already said he's going somewhere else, he still has time to make up his mind.

Poor Bill is taking a beating!! He is not responding, so I assume he left the comment and never returned to the site of the crime.

I'll bite huckleberry (csquare). Don't get a man crush on an underdeveloped dude like Faust yet unless you're a pedophile. I hope he grows into a star but there are lot's of Mike Jones types out there to contradict that. He's a good fit at Maryland but he's got lot's of work to do before anyone becomes to enamored by his ilk.
