Mark Turgeon lands his first recruit at Maryland

Five days after he accepted an offer to coach the Maryland men's basketball team, Mark Turgeon accepted his first verbal commitment with the Terps.

Seth Allen, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior combo guard from Fredericksburg (Va.) Christian, committed to the Terps during a visit to College Park on Saturday, according to several reports.

“I’m happy. I’m really happy,” Allen told The Washington Post. “It’s a real relief. Now I can focus on school and work on my basketball rather than worry about my scholarship. Words can’t explain what I’m feeling right now.”

Allen, who averaged 24 points, four rebounds, four assists and 3.5 steals as a junior, was also recruited by Central Florida, Clemson, Miami, Mount St. Mary’s, Northeastern, Old Dominion, VCU and Virginia. Turgeon had offered Allen when he was still at Texas A&M.

"He's so explosive," Fredericksburg Christian coach Darren Berkley told Scout.com. "He has great skill and vision. He has a great feel for the game. He has a 40-inch vertical. I haven't seen anyone stay in front of him."

Check back with Recruiting Report later for more on Allen’s commitment.

By all accounts this kid is a tremendous athlete and a very good player. Not known nationally but he has had some big performances on the AAU circuit recently and he should make a rise in the rankings his senior year. Go coach Turgeon!

Sounds like an up and coming star in the high school rankings. I wonder if this means that Gibbs is a gonner?

Gibbs may be a mutual breakup.

Matt-

Twitter feeds are saying Cavanaugh has heard that Faust will be back in the fold on Monday. Does it really look like that could happen? Why did he ask out of his LOI then?

Also, has anyone heard anything from Anderson since the hiring?

Ryan: I don't know about Monday, but I could see something happening with Faust next week. Haven't heard or seen anything on Anderson. -- Matt

some uncertainty currently in JA's camp due to Ehsan leaving but JA and Seth Allen are pretty tight...hope thats enough

Allen is a kid that Turgeon has been scouting since he was at A&M. I feel much more confident about signing an unheralded player if the head coach himself has seen the kid in person multiple times, and that is the case here. Turge must think very highly of him if he made him an immediate priority at Maryland. Not to mention he's from NoVa so it's technically a local recruit.

No room for Gibbs next year. Howard, Mosley and Stoglin will be enough in a down year. Allen coming in 2012 is better than Gibbs in 2011. And, if Faust comes in '11 that would be ideal. Now get some bigs and some swings (hopefully Anderson reconfirms).

Hopefully the Anderson/Allen friendship brings both to CP. Gibbs is not a loss at all. We have enough G's!!!! MUST HAVE FAUST!!!!

This was never about retaining current recruits. though most believe Faust would be an asset. Brueneg is really just a fill in until a quality player gets recruited. Gibbs is another guy who may have realized he ain't starting instead of Stoglin and he'd have to compete with Howard for time. Of course Turg would prefer to keep all three but that rarely happens under these circumstances. The 11-12 season is uphill all the way. Guys will learn to deal with adversity and improve their game and attitude. Next year and 13 will be the first years of the Turg.

Typical undersized guard for the Turd to recruit. He is probably only 5'10. Enjoy your honeymoon period with your overrated coach. It won't last.

we got good guards ... and i predict mosely will have a stellar year. new recruits score card: minimum, 6'10 and weigh 250. what is it with all these 6'10 guys that weigh 195-205?

@MikeinChicago. I didn't realize 6-2/195 is small for a point guard. I believe Derrick Rose is 6-3/190. Obviously, Chicago's harsh winter has frozen your acumen. When (if) it does, please report back.

Keep dreaming Twerp fan. If you think that's his real height you are as dumb as your mascot. Coach Turd loves little guards so he can see them eye to eye. Anyway. Enjoy your destiny for mediocrity.

@MikeinChicago - isn't it great that you can hide behind the internet and post hateful comments like you do? Coward. I'm sure there are some Chicago websites that need your thoughtless insights. Go away.

I was feeling kind of down when I first heard that Turgeon , whom I know little about was hired to replace Gary.
After seeing that he hired perhaps the best recruiter in the nation , I felt a little better. When I saw he had recruited Shaq Cleare a 6'9" 275 pounder , I felt even better.
I just found out that 7'1" Len is only out for 10 games , better !
We all know this year is a writeoff but if Turgeon can win 15 games it will be a success.

If this "supposed" 7'1" Len can play a little we won't be so bad. We didn't get Sean Miller but maybe we are better off with Turgeon. If he can build a winner going against Coach K and Roy Williams we'll be fine!

I left DC for San Antonio prices and relative warmth. Does one really expect Miller w/ the top recruiting class in the country and 75 degree February days to leave Arizona for the DC area ?
