Weekly recruiting roundup
The Maryland men's basketball program might not be done identifying prospects for its 2011 recruiting class.
Joe Davis of ScoutsFocus.com tweeted Thursday that Jared Guest, a 6-foot-7 power forward from Charis Prep in Wilson, N.C., plans to visit Maryland "early next week." According to Davis, Maryland coach Gary Williams has already been in to see the post-grad prospect play.
A Columbia, S.C., native, Guest is also being recruited by Georgia, Xavier, Western Kentucky, East Carolina and Clemson, according to ESPN.com.
Check out video of Guest, playing for Richland Northeast two years ago, below. Guest is No. 23 in white.
• Adam Zagoria reports that UM center target Desmond Hubert is scheduled to visit North Carolina this weekend.
“I’m still Maryland or North Carolina,” Hubert said Sunday in Houston after posting nine points and five boards for the East in the All-American Championship. “Im just trying to get an official done to North Carolina. They get up and down. They play the way I like to play.”
• The Mars Reel on Thursday posted a new highlight package of Terps junior small forward commitment Justin Anderson. Check out the video below.
• Terps women's commitment Tierney Pfirman was honored for her junior season Wednesday.
The standout junior played through the pain and the various physical, junk defenses she encountered every game, ignored the verbal abuse spewed from classless fans and dominated each time. The rest of the state took notice too. Pfirman was named to the Associated Press Class AA's all-state first team Wednesday, earning all-state honors for a third straight time.
Football recruiting
• Maryland linebacker signee Cole Farrand has turned heads on Pope John (N.J.) High's 4x100 relay team.
On Saturday, he led off the Lions' 4x100, which finished second to Union Catholic by a hundredth of a second at the Summit Relays.
"Not many people think I can run the 100 because of how big I am," said Farrand, who also had the best discus throw (157 feet, 2 inches) as Pope John placed second.
• Rivals.com this week provided an update on Georgetown Prep running back Dominic Bryan.
“I’ve got two offers still from Boston College and Maryland,” he said. “I’m keeping in contact with their coaches. They are telling me to get up to their spring games and they want me to come to their camps this summer.”

Matt, great coverage as always. What are you hearing about Hubert and UNC? I get the feeling that there is a very good chance he commits while in Chapel Hill. Especially after it sounds like he had a very good defensive performance in his All Star game.
Is Guest the Terps back up plan for Hubert? Or is he the back up plan in case Jordan Williams free's up another scholarship?
I get the feeling that UMD is Huberts back up plan. Which is unfortuate because the Terps could use an athletic defensive minded big man.
TL: Reading between the lines, I'd say your read on the Hubert situation sounds about right. We should find out soon enough. The Terps could certainly use another big body, so going after Guest -- whether he's a backup for Hubert, Williams or maybe even both -- makes sense. -- Matt

The Terps should be recruiting number 3 on Guest's team.He made more 3's in the video than bowie hit all year! The video was worthless on guest he blocked one shoy and made a couple layups?

I think Jordan Williams is going to the NBA. It is a weak draft this year and just off his potential alone-he is a top 25 pick in the draft. We will need to land Desmond Hubert to at least remain middle of the pack in the ACC. The potential loss of Williams-now means Gary is going to be hard pressed to get in NCAA's. Our frontline will be weak-Weis, Padgett, Pankey and Breunig is not going to scare anybody! NEED MORE BIGS!

Yea, I was wondering who #3 was also, he seemed to be in most of the highlights...is he a highly recruited prospect??
Roy: According to this roster, his name is Donald Tention. A Google search doesn't turn up much. -- Matt

With Henson and Zeller staying in school Hubert may be thinking about his minutes. But on the other hand he'll get his 15 minutes a game as time goes by and the other two will be gone and he'll only be a soph. Realistically it's really late in the season be assessing a prospect for next season.
The top 25 class rankings for '11 are the usual suspects. It's getting tougher and tougher to attract talent in this media + money market. Maybe MD should rethink its position on one and dones. Purists have their point but objectively thinking you're up against the wall when it comes to nabbing 3 or more top flight players. St Johns hired Lavin and his first full season of recruiting puts the Red Storm right after Calipari. Yes I know they toss money around like they're in a bar. But that's the game. So all I'm saying is rethink. If the objective is to get to the NCAA and get knocked out in the second round that's fine. If coach is looking for a second trophy he needs to play the game the way the big boys are. I hope there's a middle ground between Jim Calhoun and Shaka Smart. Somewhere in the middle the Mark Few and Brad Stevens have found a way to survive and prevail.

Any news on where Jordan Latham will transfer to?
Scott: Not sure. I'll check into it this week. -- Matt

I heard that D. Hubert made a decision today.
Posted by: ncterp | April 10, 2011 5:13 PM
I heard the opposite, that he didn't commit today. The concensus seems to be that he may not even have a commitable offer right now, but we'll find out soon enough...

I haven't seen any word yet, but is there any new update on Hubert? I read that he is willing to redshirt his freshman year to get stronger. Hearing that confirms to me that his #1 is UNC. He just needs to make a decision already.
Cville_Terp: He didn't commit on his visit to UNC. He's supposed to make his decision this week. -- Matt

Everyone needs to slow down with the canonization of Hubert as the Terps' savior for next season. While his presence (or lack thereof) would be magnified IF Jordan Williams foolishly remains in the NBA draft, his game remains, to be kind, unpolished on the offensive end. Defensively, he could probably immediately contribute as a rebounder and shot blocker, but his thin frame, much like Henson at UNC during his freshman season, would get pushed around and off of the blocks in the ACC, thus neutralizing his effectiveness in those areas. Right now, for any of you with a recollection of past Maryland post players, he reminds me somewhat of a slightly more athletic version of Cedric Lewis (with a higher ceiling.) In any case, annointing him as the team's missing and essential piece to next year's team is probably heaping too much expectation on Hubert at this stage of his development.

Thanks Matt!
Terp'nTexas:
I definitely agree, Hubert is going to take a year or two to develop. And even then, I don't see him being a one or two option. But I think that we are extremely thin in the frontcourt. If Williams does leave, then the only returner that we will have who got any time last year will be Padgett. We need the athleticism and potential that Hubert would bring.
I still don't understand how everyone is going to fit in together. So many young guards and wingmen, and so few true forwards. seems kind of weird to me.
