Desmond Hubert picks Tar Heels over Terps
Maryland's pursuit of Desmond Hubert finally came to an end today.
The 6-foot-9 senior center from New Egypt (N.J.) High, who the Terps had heavily recruited for at least the past two years, has committed to North Carolina.
"I had a feeling [when I was down there] but I wanted to give it a few days to let it calm down," said Hubert. "When you're there its their job to make you feel like you belong."

Hubert to UNC is not a big loss, but its not a gain either. I really don't understand what is the problem where a kid would rather ride the pine than play as a freshman unless there is something we don't know about with the MD BB team. Someone please answer the question. Why in the world would you even stick with a guy the outright says that you are his second option and carries you for months and drops you off for another team, thats seems to be the norm for MD now

I can't answer for this kid or Gary Williams, Big Will, but my guess is, even though the kid says you're his 2nd choice, you still try to recruit him. Maybe something happens to to sour him on his 1st choice and you can swoop in to get him. Remember these are 16-17 year olds, they change their minds all the time.

What? I'm amazed.

Academics, athletics, and campus...its a no brainer

Cmon...UNC education and campus is light years ahead of MD. Plus, he'll improve tremendously working against Zeller and Henson. Plus 2x--a real chance at a ring next year

"kevin" and "UNC" can make their snide comments. I attended school at both Maryland and UNC-CH, so I know. If I had my choice where to spend the next four years, it would be Maryland, hands down.

@smittyatl-- are u for real?? i gues all the concrete, noise, metro traffic, crime etc is more appealling then the southern charm of chapel hill(the people, trees etc)-not 2 mention a real chance to win at least 8 games in the acc or to play in the ncaa tourney is just too hard for some people to resist huh?? besides the comcast center, the campus and surrounding area is a DUMP! and im from md and despise unc..

Well, you cant ignore the success of the 2 programs.....UMD has struggled to even make the big dance-and the embarrassment of this past year when they watched both the NCAA and NIT, and a chance to play in the big dance virtually every year.....if I was a freshman, that would be one consideration

I'm not surprised by Hubert's decision. On purely a basketball level UNC trumps Maryland right now (emphasis on right now). UMD will return to the top I know it. What I'm suprised by is the fact that we've put 2 plus years into recruiting this kid and UNC puts a few months in and he chooses them. Unless JW returns to campus, which is looking like less of a possibilty everyday, 2011 is going to be a tough year. Honestly I'm already looking forward to 2012.

carolina is a magic name in college basketball. maryland isn't it. hubert said a while back it was an honor to be considered by n.c. carolina, like kansas, duke, kentucky are the elite mens basketball programs in the country.

Smitty had typo - He meant "face" down where it seems UMCP bar patrons spend most of their time.

"besides the comcast center, the campus and surrounding area is a DUMP! and im from md and despise unc."
Campus and surroundings never hurt USC.

UNC education light years ahead of UMD - where do you get that nugget of BS. Duke and UVA would have a much better argument. UNC has the second best head coach named Williams in the ACC. Why could'nt Roy win a Nat'l Chamionship at Kansas? As for College Park being a dump, I'm not buying that either. The Maryland campus is situated between 2 cities so in that respect it is not the bucolic heaven that is Chapel Hill, but it does have some advantages. If UMD is such a dump there should'nt be so much citicizm of GW for not getting 5 star recruits. Comcast Center is a nice facility but our best teams played in Cole so pretty buildings are not the answer to building and sustaining a great program. If there were easy answers there would be more than a handful of great programs out there. Unfortunately for UMD, 2 of those great programs are in our league. Hubert chose 1 of those programs.

yes he will have quality bigs to play against, but future carolina big men with an offensive game and weight may solidify his spot on the bench sad to say. he looks good on the defensive end, but he's getting mostly weakside blocks. won't happen as much in the acc. he's rail thin... --a shorter, lesser proven version of berend weijs. who's game i definitely appreciate. but i'd take weijs over him in a heartbeat.
if jordan does stay in the draft, then i think gary williams will be better served to go after wally judge and save the scholarships for 2011-2012 and just recruit/sign nothing but centers.

i read enough from the fools bashing md campus, academics etc .... morons
lets see, at-a-glance md can claim
satellite radio
under armour
hybrid car
google
the muppets
etc
etc
etc
so, thanks for reminding how much i appreciate my terp university .... those who like UNCCH, you're ok too. just give me those city lights

Fact UNC academically is superior to UMD..There is simply no debate here.. Look at any reputable publication. Another fact, UMD had to actually instruct their students (animals) how to properly celebrate after a win in hoops! Are you kidding me? An absolute disgrace! Wow you can ring off a few famous alum Pepper....I can point to any University in the country and do the same. By the way you also need to do a fact check on your list as well. Not entirely accurate. Lastly in the ACC alone UMD at best ranks btw 7th-9th. A sad truth.

Its just the truth folks. BTW UNC is on an academic par with UVA. Just not Duke...check the facts....to suggest differently is an opinion.. emperically speaking.

to reid and kevin ... i rest my case, more of the same smack from you and yours. did i not say that uncch was a pretty good school too. relax boys, your quick-to-defend response makes me wonder?? i was just putting things in a little perspective, so props to uncch (i think) ... but still perfer my days at md (yep visited uncch several times...cute town)
wish you well heel fans - can you all say the same to me.

If anyone thinks Hubert picked UNC for any other reason than basketball tradition, he/she needs to get his/her head examined. Academics? Please. Did not enter his mind. BTW - UVA and WF both rank higher in academics than UNC (yes, google it). Both of those campuses are rather nice too. Using the logic of some, then they ought to be getting the best recruits and winning championship after championship. How many have they won? Maryland 56th overall academically out of all universties/all divisions. Not bad. Harvard is #1 overall - but MD actually ranks higher than Harvard in engineering. Academics? Stop using that as a reason Duke and UNC win with recruits. It's because of basketball tradition - period. #3 and #4 all time in wins. Hard to compete with that.

LOYAL TERP FAN I hope what you posted doesn't stop all those idiots from posting about how much better the academics are at UNC. Thinking that Michael Jordan's geography degree is so much more valuable than a degree from Maryland makes me giggle.
Posted by: DarNel | April 19, 2011 1:29 PM
Not surprising- the only real advantage Maryland had was he would have had a better chance at 1) getting immediate playing time, and 2) eventually becoming "the man" on a Terps squad instead of a secondary player on a team full of All-Americans.
What did UNC have going for them? A superior coach, a reputation as the best college basketball program in the country for producing NBA talent, much greater visibility, a chance at a national championship in '12 (albeit riding the bench), more talented teammates, and the opportunity to improve his game playing every day against Zeller and Henson.
I'm a Terps fan and would love to rip this kid, but I can't say I would have made a different decision if I were in his shoes.

Roy won his 1st with Daugherty's players so to say he's superior to GW is simply a matter of personal preference. Reading the posts it appears that no one is critical of Hubert for choosing UNC. Rather this about bashing Maryland and Gary Williams. It is strange to hear what a great academic institution UNC is in the minds of a few in tar heel nation and even funnier to suggest that this had something to do with Hubert's decision. Rest assured that no one else views UNC in the same light as Stanford, more like Rutgers with grits and red necks. Consider this, how many preseason #1's have gone on to win national championships?
