Weekly recruiting roundup

Desmond Hubert's senior season has been extended, right along with the timeline for his recruitment.

The 6-foot-9 center scored 20 points Thursday to power New Egypt to a 60-35 win over Metuchen in a Central Jersey Group 1 quarterfinal.

After the win, phillyburbs.com's Tom Rimback asked Hubert when he planned to make his college decision.

Then he can turn his attention to another matter. He still hasn't announced whether he'll accept a college scholarship offer from Maryland or North Carolina. He's hoping to have plenty of time before making that choice.

"No, I haven't decided yet," Hubert said. "Hopefully, I'm going to decide as soon as the season's over. I just want to finish out the high school season and get to a state championship first."

• Terps point guard signee Sterling Gibbs guided Seton Hall Prep to an 86-77 win over Paramus (N.J.) Catholic.

Senior guard Sterling Gibbs connected for 25 points to pass his brother Ashton as Seton Hall Prep’s all-time scoring leader and head coach Bob Farrell earned a milestone victory in an eventful North Jersey, Non-Public A quarterfinal game in West Orange.

• UM shooting guard commitment Nick Faust's City squad fell to Edmondson in a Class 2A North semifinal Wednesday.

But when Faust (10 points) got caught up in traffic just past midcourt, recovering the ball and then getting fouled before he could get a shot up, the Edmondson victory was sealed. Faust was sent to the line with a harmless 0.1 seconds left. After he missed and the final horn sounded, the Edmondson bench erupted.

• Maryland forward target Greg Whittington helped lead Oakland Mills to a 55-42 win over Douglass of Prince George's County.

Oakland Mills, which improved to 25-0 on the year, also got a 13-point night from Joe Kiely. Whittington finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and six blocks.

The Scorpions host Gwynn Park in a 2A South regional final at 7 p.m. Friday night.

• The Washington Post's Josh Barr this week updated the recruiting status of DeMatha forward Jerami Grant.

At 6-foot-7 and 190 pound, Grant already holds several scholarship offers, including Maryland, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Georgia Tech, Villanova, Pittsburgh and Clemson. He is averaging 8.5 points, seven rebounds and two blocks for the Stags, but colleges coaches see tremendous potential in his game.

• Menomonee Falls (Wis.) wing J.P. Tokoto, who listed the Terps among his top eight teams, announced his commitment Thursday night to North Carolina.

"Definitely style of play," Tokoto said in what separated UNC and Wisconsin. "Both coaches are loving guys that really care about their players. They really have a passion for what they do, which made the decision that much harder. Stay at home or leave the state. That's what it pretty much came down to."

• UM women's commitment A'Lexus Harrison led Digital Harbor to a playoff win Thursday night.

Sophomore A'Lexus Harrison led all scorers with 17 points for No. 15 Digital Harbor as the Rams advanced to the Class 2A North regional finals Thursday with a 60-49 win over No. 12 City.

Matt-
You mean Gary lost out on another top 10?
I'm shocked.

I just really hope that this season has GW not wanting any more.
He is 66 years old. It's time to hang it up.
He won a title, but now we are just getting worse.

Again, VT, BC, and Miami, joined the ACC to give us football help, and get basketball help for themselves.
It has had the opposite effect. Both, Football and basketball have tanked.
MD loses regularly to Miami, BC, and VT. It is kind of a joke.
Then, to listen to Gary justify everything drives me nuts. Anyone who doesn't think this program has been just plain mediocre for the last 8 seasons, is kidding themselves and not watching whats going on.
Elite programs, do not need to reload. They have top 15 classes every year.

Maryland used to be in the top 25 regularly. From 1995-2003, the stayed there. When Lefty was here, they were always getting the Kings, Elmores, Bias, etc.
Gary, has never been able to recruit, but the local kids used to stay.
Those kids are NOT staying anymore, and Gary is getting the 2nd tier players.

Bottom line, we are heading to a 4th NIT in 7 years.

Hey Ryan, Gary won a share of the ACC title just last year! when a team loses their top 3 scorers as seniors of course they're going to struggle. But Terps have a good class coming in next year and they're going to be a much better team (top 3 in the league). Have a little faith

Ryan:

Please go away.

This is by far, the worst team in over 20 years.
Not having any shooters, and not having any athelets, is a bad combination.
Very bad team.
I agree that Gary should consider retiring.

Ryan-

I will not say which side of the fence I fall on as far as Gary coaching in 2012 and beyond. I do have a question for you, who is a quality logical choice to take the reins and run the team if it's not Gary. Just a matter of opinion that I thought about when I read your post.......It sure appears easy to pile on the coach now after a rough season ended with some even rougher games

After this miserable season ,I doubt if Maryland will be able to get a committment from anyone. More than likely, this team will lose in the first game of the tournament. If invited to the NIT, they would be smart to turn it down for the sake of the fans. We don'r need anymore disappointments from either the mens team or the womens team.

Matt-

Terptalk is saying that Justin ANderson AND Whittington were at the VA game.

Can you confirm that?

Great. 2 more moving on.

And whoever, MD won a TIE of the regular season, because of a FLUKE shot hit by Cliff Tucker (his only in 4 years) against GT.
They then were bounced in the 1st round of the ACC AGAIN. Then, beat by MSU, without their best player, in the NCAA.

I don't care who leaves. It's college basketball. Players leave every year. That's why you recruit.
Gary, can't recruit. Doesn't WANT to recruit. And has just totally stopped doing whatever needs to be done to get the good players.

Bob Haynie thinks Jamie Dixon would make a good coach for MD. People are saying other names too.
He think MD is an upgrade over Nova, and I just think thats crazy at this point.

True, we had 2 final fours, which has led us to this point. lol. awesome.
Way to cash it in gary.

But, this program is a joke at this point. When you recruit players for 5 years, and they are going to Charleston, and switching, and asking out of their LOI, etc. Somethings wrong.

Too many people make excuses, and don't care that we are looking at 4 NITs in 8 years.

The 8 years following a NCAA Title. Think about that. Gross.

Ryan - your drum head must be getting worn out by now.

Since 2000, Maryland has the third best winning percentage in ACC games - behind Duke and NC. They are the #4 and #2 ranked teams in wins all time in the country.

As for local kids staying... Before Keith Booth came as a player, MD did not get local players. That was the rap on Lefty. Ernie Graham to Keith Booth. Figure it out. It was many years between those two.

You don't like GW - that's fine. You are entitled to your opinion. Just don't talk about things you have no clue about.

I am not going to say that I am a Terps fan but if you cut me I bleed maryland basketball red !!!! That being said you can explain the terps troubles in two points. No three point shooting which makes Williams job that much harder. and no effective three point defense. The good is that we have a good trio in Williams Stoglin and Howard who will be more experienced, with the help we have comming in I think next year that we will be competive (10-6) in the ACC and back in the NCAA tournament. About coach Williams let me point out that he got us our championship. He came here when no one else would I cannot beleive the lack of loyality he is being shown.

Loyal Terps fan,

When did I say anything about local players? I don't care where they are from. I said players used to come here because under lefty, they were known for having beasts, and they kept recruiting like that.

As for you "record".

The last 8 seasons, the terps are 67-61 in the ACC.
The have finished 6,6,6,3,5,7,1,7.
ALL OF THAT ON THE HEALS of 2 final fours.

Gary used to get the players to play better than their talent. Now, he can't even do that.
His offense, has ALWAYS had stints of weakness. Yet, because he is so arrogant, he never changes.
His in game coaching, is horrid. The players make stupid plays, and have for years.
He is 66, and the game has past him by. He doesn't try to recruit, and he needs to be let go if we don't want to be bored for the month of March every other year.
The program is a joke. They actually write what the top recruits say, about them being a place that can't produce a good NBA player.
That Gary doesn't know how to get the most out of his best recruits.
That McDonald all americans come to MD to bust out.

I just think its funny that so many people argue with facts.
4 NITs in 7 years.

Relax fellas, Ryan is only 10 years old, he means no disrespect to Gary, he just doesn't know any better. When you are that young, you don't remember the years after Lefty, when Bob Wade came in and totally wrecked the program. Without Gary cleaning up the mess, we would still be winning 12 games a year today. Ryan is too young to know any better.
