Weekend wrap – Big games for Whittington, Hubert
Oakland Mills forward Greg Whittington has spent most of his senior season doing his best Jordan Williams impersonation against Howard County competition.
On Friday night, Whittington continued that trend with his 12th double double of the season. The potential Maryland target had 31 points and 10 rebounds in the Scorpions' 65-53 win over Howard.
“We are not running any tricks or smoke and mirrors here,” said Oakland Mills head coach Jon Browne. “We want to get the ball to Whittington as much as possible. We go where Greg takes us.”
• Maryland center target Desmond Hubert reached double figures to help New Egypt (N.J.) claim a victory Sunday night.
Nine different players scored for New Egypt, led by Desmond Hubert and Mark Pryzblkowski with 17 points each, as the Warriors denied Pennington Prep’s feisty point guard with a 69-61 victory at the PrimeTime Shootout.
Football recruiting
• Former Maryland defensive end pledge Dontez Tyler has committed to Old Dominion.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Tyler, from Hertford High in Ahoskie, N.C., committed to Maryland last summer. But the commitment washed when Terrapins coach Ralph Friedgen was fired at the end of the season.
• Point Pleasant Borough (N.J.) tight end Ryan Malleck spoke to The Asbury Park Press about his decision to switch his commitment from Maryland to Virginia Tech.
"They say don't pick a school because of a coaching staff because that can change every year," Malleck said. "But you have to be comfortable with the coaching staff before you commit, so it's tough. I felt like when I committed (to Maryland) I had to stay there but you don't have to. It's only a verbal commitment and that's not binding.
"But with coaches leaving or getting fired, until you sign, you have to do what's in your own best interests."
• Two Maryland recruits made 247Sports.com's prep school Top 20: offensive lineman Nate Clarke and wide receiver Tyrek Cheeseboro.
17. Tyrek Cheeseboro, WR, Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy, Maryland Cheeseboro originally signed with Maryland out of high school and will join the Terps program. A speedy receiver with good hands, Cheeseboro should help with depth early in his career in College Park.
• ACC Sports Journal's Bill Wagner weighed in Monday with a long piece on the the state of recruiting in Maryland.
By far the biggest story in this region was the University of Maryland’s inability to protect its home turf. It appears the Terrapins will sign just two high school seniors from the Maryland-D.C. area and none are highly-rated. In fact, Quince Orchard linebacker Alex Twine had no other Division I-A scholarship offers at the time of his commitment while DeMatha defensive back Michael Williams chose Maryland over a couple Mid-American Conference schools.

Thanks for the heads up on the state of Maryland local recruiting. It's in shambles. I mean - no one even talks about it b/c it's not news anymore - it is just expected. What's more pathetic is that local guys don't just go other places - they don't even consider or visit Maryland. This program needs some serious momentum with O'Brien on 1 side and Don brown on the other. .. b/c this is just an embarrassment.
