Weekly recruiting roundup
A prime Maryland post target is reportedly off the board, while another has listed the Terps in his top group of schools under consideration.
Rivals.com reported Thursday that Cleveland, Miss., big man Johnny O'Bryant is headed to LSU.
Besides Ole Miss and Mississippi State, O’Bryant also considered Alabama, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Miami.
The Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch, meanwhile, reported that four-star power forward Adjehi Baru has narrowed his list of schools to College of Charleston, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia Tech.
Virginia Tech and Maryland recently informed Baru that as far as they're concerned, they see him as the No. 3 big man in the Class of 2011 nationally.
• Former UM shooting guard target Jabari Brown has committed to Oregon.
“He adds an impact scorer … but more importantly Oregon now has street cred in the world of recruiting,” ESPN analyst Paul Biancardi noted. “Everybody wants to play with great players. Jabari Brown is a great player.
• DeMatha power forward Mikael Hopkins pledged this week to Georgetown.
Hopkins, who is 6 feet 9 and 215 pounds, picked the Hoyas after considering Maryland, Virginia Tech, Miami, West Virginia, Texas and Ohio State.
• ESPN.com's Reggie Rankin reported on Twitter that City shooting guard Nick Faust, a UM target, "might visit Villanova this weekend."

• Bowie Patch's Nate Baker wrote a long feature this week on Maryland defensive back commitment Jeremiah Hendy.
"I decided to go to Maryland (UMD) because first, my mother really loved the school." explained Hendy. "I would really like if my parents and my family could come see me play. I feel like it made a lot of sense because I have sort of a reputation around here, in this area, and I would like to continue that, and stay in my hometown area and give back to this community."
Hendy's connection to his family will be even more important after the death of his older brother last week. Darrel Hendy, 29, was fatally shot in Southeast Washington, D.C. on Saturday.
• The News-Press of Fort Myers, Fla., caught up this week with new Terps linebacker commitment Jimmy Stewart.
"Coach Friedgen was really happy when I committed," Stewart said. "Maryland had recruited me a little bit early on but I never thought I'd commit there."
• UM linebacker target Travis Hughes is visiting North Carolina this weekend, according to PalmettoSports.com.
Hughes had favored North Carolina but says he does not have a favorite right now. "Clemson, North Carolina, (Virginia) Tech...they're all there," he said. "I don't really have a favorite or a top five. Clemson is way up there with me though."

Matt, I'm a little concerned about Faust. A couple weeks ago it seemed he was almost ready to commit to the Terps. Has something changed? Or is he just doing his due dilligence? Should I be worried about him?

Although Faust has long been thought of as a Maryland "lock", Jay Wright's personality and style of play may sway him to the Wildcats. If I were GW, I'd make a strong pitch to Lewis to commit now and hope that Baru isn't blown away at UNC, as most kids would be. Space had been favoring Arkansas so until he commits to the Terps with pressure from Bino, I wouldn't count on him. I still don't get why JOB signed with LSU as he would have been a perfect fit for the flex with JWill and what has LSU done lately in hoops? His parents probably wanted him closer to home. Hopefully, with all of the effort the staff has made this year, the 2011 class will still be a good one.

More and MOre top recruits NOT SIGNING with the the Terps.
I just don't get what we are doing. That run from about 98-2003 was just such an abboration. Wow.
Oh well.
It has to be frustrating. They stay with these kids for like 5 years, then you see them as top 20 national players, and they NEVER pick the terps. Then, they get 1, and he changes his mind. lol.
Way to go. This is gonna be a really long season I'm afraid.

Matt-
What is the status of Quinn Cook, and are the Terps stiill on his list?
Any top 25 overalls still listing MD? Top 50?

The O'Bryant news is disappointing although I guess getting a deep south kid was a long-shot. Frustrating that we can't seem to get any recruiting consistency on a national level. Faust visiting Nova makes me a little nervous. I happen to know folks in Richmond that are close with Baru's sponsors and they say Carolina is now firmly in the mix and may damage our chances. The most baffling part of our recruiting to me is the inability to land even one of the top tier big men available year in and year out. Seems like for every diamond in the rough like Baxter, Wilcox or even Jordan Williams who was not that widely recruited, we get a half dozen projects. I sure would like to see us break through!

Mikepcfl -- I'd be surprised if Faust goes anywhere other than Maryland, but you never know. He's a really good kid who's probably doing his due diligence.
Ryan -- The Terps have been off Cook's list for awhile. They're most seriously involved with Faust, Space, Baru and Lewis. Faust and Baru are Top 50 guys.
Tenn Terp -- Thanks for the info.

Matt-
So, do you think this Baru guy is high on MD? And, when do you think we might see another commit to 2011?
It seems every year, we see these guys go off the board, and MD doesn't get any.

Ryan -- I think Baru is high on Maryland, but I really don't know how the Terps compare to the other three schools on his list. They've definitely been on him for a really long time, so that's all you can ask for at the moment. I'd think we'll see at least one more 2011 commitment before the fall signing period.

I think sometimes we look at these guys based on potential instead of what type of people they really are. Sean Mosely was a perfect fit for Maryland becasue he had the type of personality that made him want to get better everytime he touched a basketball. Maybe and I do mean maybe these kids that we are recruiting (some of them anyway) just want things handed to them like a starting spot or promised minutes on the court. Clearly we have seen some kids go out of state to teams the have problem programs Like Tenn, and Memphis and LSU and those are teams that in my opinion will never get a championship. But for Maryland the type of kids we need are the kids that believe in hard work and what it takes to get there. If it comes from the likes of Padgett, Pankey, Williams and Peshon then I'll take it. Last year One senior and one freshman determined how far we went and this year we will need the freshman just as much and from what I hear about their pickups games we should be ok. In the past four years we have lost recruits to Pitt, Memphis, Tenn, LSU, VT, but none of those teams got much futher than we did in the tournament. Calipari even proved that you can have all the talent in the world 5 pro daft picks and not win a championship, kids play in championships but coaching wins them.

@ Will...best post ever on this blog. Matt does a great job providing the info. Gary can flat out coach. period. They will always be competitive and fight. Did he have some bad classes? yes, and some disappointing seasons for sure. but if you look at the entire body of work I'd say us terp fans are extremely fortunate to have him for so long...He saved the program, RYAN....nuff said

We also see problems later on with some of these kids. Look at Selby and Barton. There have been a few others lately.
I have to trust GW's judgement and appreciate that he will not do anything to harm the reputation of the university. He's seen the consequences of that when he started at MD and I'm glad he hasn't forgotten.
Thanks GW!
