Video: Josh Selby named Athlete of the Year
Lake Clifton point guard Josh Selby capped an award-filled senior year Wednesday when he was honored as The Baltimore Sun's Male Athlete of the Year.
After the 44th annual awards banquet, Selby discussed his feelings on being named Athlete of the Year, and his expectations for his college career at Kansas.
“Bill Self, he’s a great coach,” Selby said in a video interview with The Sun's Kevin Richardson. “[It’s a] great group of guys. That tradition is just great. They won a national championship in 2008. So hopefully I can get there and win a championship to bring back home for Baltimore.
“When I get there, I just hope that I get one and done – I ain’t gonna lie. I hope that they mature me on and off the court, make me a better man and make me a better player.”
Check out the video below for an extended Q&A with Selby, including his thoughts on replacing Sherron Collins in the Jayhawks' lineup, becoming a leader and more.

Does he even have the SAT scores and grades to even qualify for College?

Why would you think that he wouldn't?

Matt, is there any connection between the ticket scam going on at Kansas and any of the teams that Josh played for? Thanks.

What the heck!!!!
One and done....what kind of a university accepts that crap!
A college is supposed to be for establishing a career and for education. Not a minor league for the NBA! Now I'm not naive, in knowing that's exactly what they are, but to blantently say I'm gone after one year???? That's insulting to the college, the coach, and anybody who's had to struggle to even get into a college.
I don't know, maybe I'm blowing this out of proportion, but couldn't your at least wait til your freshman year was over before saying you're leaving???
If I was U of Kansas, I'd say thanks, but no thanks.

CA Terp Fan -- Not that I'm aware of. Pretty sure that Double Pump AAU in Calif. is the connection.
Brak -- He said in the video that he'll do whatever it takes to get to the NBA, whether that's 1, 2, 3 or 4 years in college. Maybe it's just me, but at least he's being upfront about his intentions and not masquerading as something he's not.

I HAVE TO AGREE WITH BRAK. IF I WERE THE COACH AT KANSAS I WOULD BE YAKING THAT SCHOLARSHIP BACK AND SAYING THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. I ALSO QUESTION HIS ELIGIBLITY? LAKE CLIFTON NOT A BASION FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE. THE LAST 3 BASKETBALL STARS FOR LAKE CLIFTON ALL HAD TO GO TO PREP SCHOOL BEFORE ATTEND COLLEGE.

I have to agree w/ Matt Bracken. Selby was upfront with his intentions. Isn't the goal to get to the NBA? TO make Millions upon millions of dollars and play against the best athletes in the world? Thats why these athletes go to college, its THEIR minor leagues. Selby said what he thought, he hopes that he plays well enough and Coach Self helps him grow enough that he can leave after a year. If you are a highly talented 18 year old isn't that your goal? To play so well you'll be a top pick in the NBA draft after your freshman season, like Oden, Wall, Durant (he was #2, but ok) etc? Education is important yes, but college will ALWAYS be there. And more importantly, what's the real reason most people go to college? Is it to obtain some higher level of learning? NO! most people go to college b/c we are conditioned to believe that we will make more money if you have an advanced degree or training of some kind. So please tell me what job is going to pay Josh Selby more money than Pro ball? He LOSES money by staying in school? And Bill Self knows what he's getting into. You KNOW the top freshman are going to leave, you run that risk when you recruit them. But that's why those teams are consistently making elite 8's. Or would you have Eric Haye's and Grevies Vasquez' here for 4 years and get bounced in the 1st round or not make the tourney at all?

Brak, college is for preparation for a career, and this kid's intended career is in the NBA. Why stay longer than necessary?
IMO more kids need to be thinking about preparing for life after college instead of treating it as an end all. Some of our greatest achievers left college early to chase their dreams (e.g. Steve Jobs)

Now you know why he is not a terp. Many question why Gary did not go after him. one and done players you can have them. probably wont even go to class. Typical City player.

uncleollie41...hmmmmm...questioning someone's academic abilities, all while delivering two mis-spelled words and a run-on sentence...BRILLIANT!!!

Wow, with an attitude like that he will certainly be one and done. Good luck getting him to go to class. Hey Matt, aren't there alternatives for guys like Selby? The NBDL maybe? How can students identify with a classmate who does not really want to be there? In past blogs we all heard guys like Ryan criticize GW for ignoring this dude. He sounds like the next Skip Wise. He'll make just enough money to buy a dirt bike and join a gang at the rate he's going!

If it wasn't for the rule that a kid had to do a year before entering his name in the draft he'd be going to the NBA. I'd said this one time before Josh is a good Kid he's bright and he's the best basketball player we had to offer since Carmelo. Anyways because he's not going to Umd. I'm not going to bash him. It's your boy D.K. Josh see you in the lottery next year. All you haters blame Kobe,Lebron,K.G.,Amarie, and Carmelo for going one and done. Thanx and as always Go Terps!!!!

Umm... Kobe, Lebron, Kevin Garnett and Amare Stoudemire were not "one and done" because they were drafted out of high school and never played college basketball. The only reason that players like Josh and John Wall even go to college is because of the NBA rule that says you cannot be drafted until you are 19. With the success that Brandon Jennings had going to Europe and getting paid for a year instead of going to college, I think you'll see more players getting around this rule by going to Europe or to the D-League (if rules permit).
