Terps land JUCO center Berend Weijs

The Maryland men’s basketball team has received a late addition to the 2010 recruiting class.

Berend Weijs, a 6-foot-10, 210-pound center from Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, Pa., reportedly signed with the Terps during an official visit to College Park today.

“It’s a done deal,” said Harcum head coach Drew Kelly. “He signed a letter of intent this afternoon.”

Check back with Recruiting Report later this afternoon for more on Weijs’ commitment.

6'10" and 210? Sounds like someone needs to add some muscle. How many years will he be able to give the Terps?

Is this young buck a rising star? Is this the result of Gary's hard recruiting sword? Where are the mods.

What a joke Gary is. Sitting in the best recruiting turf in the country and we now have this year's JUCO excuse for recruiting lapses.

Earlier reports claimed this guy, from NW Europe, was averaging around 6pts, 6rb. at Harcum. Sounds like he'll fit in with Goins, Paisson, Pearman and Pankey. This portends the departure of Goins as two projects in the front court seems a bit much. Terps need a 2011 prep bigman to fit with the 2010 class. Then again, the importance of bigs seems overrated in college basketball.

TerpAndy

With Goins on the way out the door we needed to add some depth to the frontcourt. This dude wasn't brought in to be a stud. He is here to play some d, block some shots, and in general just provide another body.

Gary has pulled in a top 20 (#21 before juco signee)class with 6 good players including top 40 Mychal Parker. Next year we have top 75 guard Sterling Gibbs in the fold as well as two top 20 players on their final lists. With Mosley, and runner up FOY Williams.. the Terps will be as strong as any team in the ACC..By the way.. Only Duke and Carolina have a better record since our NC year 2002 in the ACC so we're in good company

A nice pick up. This is a pretty complete recruiting class. Good job GW!

Is Maryland's 2010 recruiting class really 21st in the country without Ross? I was not aware of that. I looked at Scout and Rivals and do not see the Terps listed. Obxterps, can you tell me where you got that from?

Once again, a bunch of critics without any knowledge weigh in. None of us have seen him play. He did block 119 shots on a good team. Comparing him to Goins shows how stupid people can be. Just like criticizing Palsson or comparing him to Choi The one thing we know is that both Palsson and Weijs played with good programs. Lets see how they play before we judge them. Seeing someone play once doesn"t count.

His stats, other then his blocks are almost identical to Osby"s, and he was pretty good. Gary does well with Juco big men ie Smith, Randle, Osby.

This is where I read about the Recuiting class being #21. (in the Baltimore Sun)

fred44terp, TerpAndy, & Zigzag,

Just found this link

And it shows that you guys know nothing. Here is some quote form the article. If JW think he is good, then his is good because JW faced many top bigs in ACC last year, and some of them he was impressed at all.

It started innocently enough about three weeks ago. C.J. Scott, a guard at Bryn Mawr (Pa.) Harcum College, was on his way to play pickup at Maryland. His teammate Berend Weijs, a 6-foot-10, 210-pound power forward, asked if he could join him.

At that point Weijs wasn’t expecting anything to come out of playing—just some experience. But he asserted himself against Maryland’s players, and they began talking. They told the Terps’ coaching staff, which is not allowed to be present for pickup games, that Weijs could play.

About a week later, Weijs returned to participate again. Same result. Freshman center Jordan Williams, Weijs said, was particularly impressed. The staff invited Weijs to take an official visit this week.

Thanks for the link Doug, I missed a few days of the Sun.

He looks like zoubek or UNC 's big guy Ziegler. NEEDS WEIGHT.

If he puts on meat he will give huge impact in the middle. Let Lucas shoot a three against him. lol. VERY AGILE and Athletic. This may be an Ozzie Newsome like find.
