Reports: Terps land first 2011 hoops recruit
The Maryland men's basketball program has landed its first commitment for the 2011 class.
Seton Hall Prep (N.J.) point guard Sterling Gibbs, according to numerous media reports, committed to Maryland last night. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound junior picked the Terps over offers from Indiana, Florida, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Virginia and Wake Forest.
“They were there the whole time,” Gibbs said. “They were involved since my freshman year. I was the most comfortable at Maryland. Also, Gary Williams is a great coach. He is very fiery and I like that about him.”
Check back with Recruiting Report later today for more on Gibbs' commitment.

This is a nice pick up. My only concerns is that we would already have a point guard in place, Terrell Stoglin.
Does anyone know if he was rated 3 or 4 stars?

I'm liking the 2010 class more and more. Howard, Parker, and Stoglin will end up much better than the 3-star recruits they were labeled as.
This team will be dangerous in two years, very dangerous if they can keep everyone from jumping to the NBA.
I think this is the best group to come here in several years but time will tell.

Who is Stoglins Backup? (after next year)
Maybe this Kid we just signed is stoglins back up. Also who is to Say Stoglin stays all four years, maybe he play real good and leaves after his Junior year.
Gibbs will have to get stronger (like Dixion did). Does not appear to be able to dunk, which of course he does not need to do as a PG, but it shows he can develope more strength. Dixon could not Dunk when he got to MD, but he could when he left. (no monster dunks, but he got strong enough to elevate if needed.

Sterling:
Congrats on the commitment, now go work on your left hand. It seems you can dribble with it, but you keep laying it up from the left side with your right hand.
In the ACC, those shots will end up six rows deep.

Sweet! can't wait to see you play in a UM uniform Sterling!
Can never have enough great ball-handlers.

I am not sure who on this board has seen stogs play in person or just highlights. I was able to catch him at the capital classic and while that may not be the best judge I did not see his court vision as a particular strength. I see him early in his career having an impact scoring the ball, and between him and Howard they can handle the backcourt duties for a year, however both are not a pure point in the manor that Gibbs has been described in scouting reports. Howard is smart and understands tempo (I have seen him in person on numerous occasions) and will always give you the flashy pass but I think will ultimately be better suited for the wing where he is able to attack. Gibbs will be the straw that stirs the pot. Great pick up!

I agree with "roundabout730" regarding the guards' likely "slots." Nevertheless, the combination of the three of them should provide the Terps with a great deal of backcourt and ball handling stability.
As for the incoming guards, at first glance, Howard reminds me of another former Maryland "Howard"--Mo. Like Mo before him, he seems to be a defense and pass first guard with the ability to drive and score, when necessary. And, while I have not yet seen Stoglin play, I hope Terps' fans temper their apparent unbridled enthusiasm somewhat with him and allow Stoglin time to develop within Williams' system. With Maryland's pretty strong returning core of experienced back court players and Williams' noted preference/loyalty to his upperclassmen, it will be difficult for Stoglin to meet the lofty expectations I sense are envisioned for him by some Maryland fans next year.
Finally, in looking at Gibbs' above highlight tape, with the form he displayed on his outside shot (think Keith Gatlin's set shot), unless Gibbs substantially changes same, he'll require another guard's penetration to allow him to spot up, a la Vasquez-Hayes, to ever consistently get his shot off. This should be one area where Stoglin's and Howard's presence can help.

Yea I definitely do not want to paint the picture that Stoglin and Howard are starting from day one. As many have speculated on this board before what the lineup will be next year, I see the guard rotation playing out with Bowie, Tucker and Mosley starting the season and potentially Howard taking over at lead guard for Bowie mid-way through. With the three backcourt players coming back and 3 more coming in consistent minutes for all 6 is not practical. I would suspect Parker may demand some PT as well, so to have such lofty expectations for Stoglin may be unrealistic.

Just curious, where are the big men? We seem to guard heavy these days? Jwill is going to need some help down low. The current guys seem to be too small and seem like bench players.

Welcome Sterling, you've made a wise decision. Seems like a quality young man who wants a good education and wants to play for a fiery coach. That's all that needs to be said. Fear the turtle!

Wow, the kid's shot does look like Keith Gatlin's. Nice call Terp'nTexas. It also looks like his big brothers, though a bit awkward, is effective
