Lake Clifton's Josh Selby commits to Kansas

For about 45 seconds Saturday night, all eyes at Madison Square Garden in New York were intently focused on Josh Selby. josh-selby-lake-clifton-commits.jpg

After months of rumor, speculation and conjecture, the Lake Clifton combo guard was finally ready to end his recruitment at the Jordan Brand Classic all-star game. Before a nationally televised audience on ESPN2, Selby, at long last, revealed his college destination.

"It's tough," Selby said, "but I'm going to be a Kansas Jayhawk. ... I think that's the best way for me to mature on and off the court and get to the next level."

Selby, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound senior, selected the Jayhawks over offers from Arizona, Connecticut, Kentucky and Tennessee. At Kansas, Selby will likely be counted on to replace Sherron Collins, a four-year contributor, as the Jayhawks' starting point guard.

"His ability to shoot the basketball and spread the floor is going to give them an extra gear as well," ESPN analyst Jay Williams said after Selby's announcement. "He can attack the basket off the dribble. ... [Kansas shooting guard] Tyshawn Taylor and he might be one of the best backcourts in the Big 12."

Selby, who started his high school career at John Carroll and spent his sophomore and junior seasons at DeMatha, committed to Tennessee in Sept. 2008. Ten months later, Selby reopened his recruitment and immediately became one of the most sought-after recruits in the country.

Playing for Nike Baltimore Elite on the AAU circuit last summer, Selby battled the best point guards in the country on a weekly basis and more than held his own. Rivals.com has rated Selby the No. 4 player in the country and No. 2 point guard, while ESPN.com lists him as the No. 5 player nationally and the No. 3 point guard. Analysts and scouts have praised him for his scoring ability and competitiveness.

"What I like about Josh Selby, regardless of where he goes, he's going to make that team tough," said ESPN analyst Jimmy Dykes during Saturday's broadcast. "This kid competes. He's got some dog in him, in the right way. ... Josh Selby is going to pour himself into the personality of that ballclub, and I love that about this guy."

Selby showcased that toughness as a senior at Lake Clifton, averaging 32 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals for the Lakers. He was honored as The Baltimore Sun's All-Metro Player of the Year, and picked up invitations to play in the McDonald's All-American Game -- in which he won the dunk contest last month -- and the Jordan Brand Classic.

Lake Clifton coach Herman Harried said Friday that he expects Selby to have "a great impact" as a freshman. Selby will be surrounded by more talented players, Harried said, and those talented teammates will have to be accounted for by the opposition.

"In high school, opposing defenses played all five on him," Harried said. "At the college level, they won't be able to do that. He's going to have other talented players around him to make plays. They'll be able to trap him and stuff like that, but they won't be able to send the whole bench after him. ... He just possesses a will to win, talent, of course athleticism, and he's a team player."

At Kansas, Selby will play for a program just two years removed from the national title. Playing for Bill Self, Selby said, was a major factor in his decision.

"He kind of reminds me of myself," Selby said of Self. "He's very outgoing. He's a great coach and he gets the job done."

Another top recruit that Gary does not get to College Park. Don't go and say Gary didn't want him or that he wouldn't qualify at UMD. Selby was good enough for one of the top programs in the country and he qualified academically at a prestigious school.

Big G...morons like you no zero about college basketball. Zero. He did not want to go to maryland and good for Maryland. Kansas a prestigious school? Since when?

Selby is one and done......just like Lance Stephenson. How did that work out for Cincy?

I don't think Gary even offered a ship to Selby?? Is this because Selby is going to be one and done? Even so, get one year out of a star. Syracuse got a Championship out of Carmelo in his only season there.

Do not agree with Big G negative comments. Selby had no obligation to "stay home." Why didn't he go to Georgetown? Gary does what Gary does. As a fan, I am proud with the group of kids he puts on the court every year.

I think you are absolutely wrong on this one. First of all, it is more difficult for a kid to qualify to play basketball at Maryland than Kansas. Second, Gary deserves kudos for not jumping into the "snake oil salesman" game to get a 1 and done player who would not be playing in college if not for the rule change. I wish Josh the best in Lawrence, Kansas and in the NBA as well. I think he will be an amazing player in the one season he plays at Kansas as well as in the NBA. However, I think the University of Maryland men's basketball team will be better off without the baggage, distraction and "born ready" attitude he would have brought to College Park .

MD will never get another 5 Star recruit until Gary retires!!

BIg G Kansas academic requirements are lower then Md. Selby couldn"t handle academics at De Matha. He is a one and done. We don"t need him. Kansas has questionable recruiting practices.

Big G:

Prestigious university, huh? According to the US News & World Report's 2010 college rankings, KU ranks 96th nationally (higher when only measured against public universities), while Maryland ranks 53rd, tied with Ohio State. Both UM and OSU are recognized among the top 20 public universities in the nation. Also, it appears that KU's prestige is so well reknowned that only over 91% of those who apply are let in; Maryland, on the other hand, accepts approximately 39% of its applicants. Either get a life or, at the very least, some facts to support your position.

No one knows for certain whether Selby would or would not have qualified at Maryland. The popular rumor was that he would have had a problem. What is certain is that qualifying is not a question at KU. Whether Williams wanted Selby or not, you cannot blame him if Selby simply wanted to leave the area which appears to have been the case--in 2 separate commitments, he selected 2 out-of-state schools.

I wish him well, but would point out a few potential character "red flags" with the young man. In addition to his multiple commitments and school transfers, I was particularly amused by his reported unsuccessful attempt to "cop" free tickets to the Maryland-Duke game by feigning a late interest in the Terps which, by the way, Williams did not buy and which immediately disappeared the day following the game. Self and Selby deserve one another.

Lance Stephenson is coming back for a 2nd year.

ANYONE who thinks Gary would turn down a kid for being of the 1 and done variety, you are totally dillusional.

He can't get one anyway.

Another dog and pony show comes to an end. Wish the kid the best and move on. No loss whatsoever for the Terps.

Get off Garys back!! Selby is overrated.

One and done guys take too long to acclimate to the college game and than most disappear to sit at the end of NBA benches before the coaching has a chance to payoff. Recruiting at the college level is an artform to some degree and the best contributors are guys who are developing through HS and then grow into vital contributors. Jordan Williams fits that model as did Vasquez, Dixon, Baxter and Smith. I for one would only commit to likely one and done's if they were coming from the JC ranks like Francis but even then those guys really don't make a real difference in most cases.
Frankly, Selby sounds like the typical super talented, uncoachable headcase. He's no Kevin Durant. More like Telfair

You guys are right with the recruits he's getting Gary will never win another ACC title. Wait, didn't he just do that?

I mean, if your recruits just took you to 13-3 in the ACC, isn't your recruiting pretty good by definition? Would losing with five star recruits be better than winning with Greivis? Apparently the admins at Wake Forest thought not. And I doubt UNC fans were particularly fond of the idea either.

Big G....The NCAA allows schools to grant exceptions for students who do not meet all of the standards. How do you think the North Carolina's, Kentucky's and Kansas' of the world can keep grabbing these Mickey D All-Americans. I believe the athletic departments have a certain number of exceptions that they can spread out over the many scholarship sports. Well guess what, Maryland does not issue exceptions. For that you can thank Len Bias and Bob Wade.

BTW, Lance is not coming back for a senior year. Originally he said he was though, but he changed his mind.

I wish him well - really. Would have rather he stayed in home - but that's his choice. But this same old non-story from the same old faux fans? From my understanding and a little research...Gary and co showed interest (even Scouts mentions MD making an effort with him). But at some point it obviously wasn't going to happen so what do you want Gary to do - kidnap the kid?? Whether the reason was: A) he won't come to MD, B) He has different goals or attitude than Gary needs or wants C) He might not qualify school-wise (which I don't really know one way or the other) or D) for whatever reason, even somebody steering him because os Nike or money. At the end of the day he wants to go elsewhere.

There's a story floating around about a kid who's father was peeved that they didn't meet with Gary personally on a visit - and a ton of outrage about how Gary dissed the family and can't recruit. But the other side of the story was that the recruit and father - called the day before and just decide to show up on campus w/o warning while Gary was obligated to be out of town at a charity golf tournament with half of the big time coaches out there. These things are ALWAYS a little less one sided that they are played out in these GARY CAN'T RECRUIT RANTS.

Some around here should begin to catch on that this is Gary's team to recruit as he wants and run as he wants until he doesn't want to anymore. Hate it? Fine - but don't expect it to change and maybe you should find another team to complain about. I for one love the team's Gary puts together and coaches up - not always as highly touted as some - that fight hard and play together.

It's funny that if there is are any 5 star recruits interested in maryland they are labeled as dumb as a box of rocks and "they never would make it in" but many other programs in the country do not have any academic problems. How much of an SAT score you need to get into Duke? So all those 5 star recruits they get is from cheating? Even teams like Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, Baylor get occasional 5 star recruits. So what is every college program in the country cheating at getting 5 star recruits in? Maryland is the only school playing it right? Or is the team not trying when it comes to recruiting? Give me a break Gary does'nt want these guys and like one of the other posters said we will not see a 5 star guy while Gary is here. Which is a shame but thats what he wants so we just have to deal with it.

Ryan:

Where do you get your information? As of April 7th, ALL news reports have stated that Stephenson is, not only declaring for the NBA, but is retaining an agent. Once the latter occurs, he cannot return to college.

And, for what it is worth, Williams practically did turn Stephenson down last year by ultimately withdrawing Maryland's recruitment of him.

plus, Selby originally committed to Tennesse in 2008 so he was off the board then. MD went elsewhere and locked up Stoglin early....granted, not a 5 star like Selby but #45 overall (according to latest MaxPrep ranking), not bad. Consider that: Gary just had the ACC player of the year in Vasquez, Jordan Williams was runner up for ACC rookie of the year, Sean Mosely was one of the top players in Baltimore. MD's recruiting class for 2010 is ranked #21

OK...I was wrong...Ryan is the biggest moron on this blog spot. Go get your facts straight. Stephenson, on April 7, declared for the NBA draft. The funny thing is most scouts aren't impressed with his game. He'll be a nice bench warmer in Orlando.

Gary Williams, whether you love him or hate him, is a CLASS act. Like many of the older coaches in his profession (except Calhoun), he believes in the concept of the student athlete.

All one and done'rs should be coached by the sleazeballs of the profession....Calhoun, Self and King Sleazeball himself, Calipari.

I wish Selby well. This is a free country and I hope he strikes it big $$$. Just get of GW's back for not wanting to pimp thes young men for one year.

Tony,

Maryland's athletic requirements are stricter than every school you have mentioned. Yes, even Duke. The only school that is stricter than UMD is Stanford.

On a more peaceful topic Hakkur and Stoglin played in the DC tourney over the weekend. Stoglin looks great. A real pg with an outside shot and ball handling ability. I can see him teaming up with Mosley. For what it's worth it's ridiculous to rant one way or the other about recruiting. It is what it is. As for a tie for the ACC that's cool. But Duke did get the title. That's a big diff. Apparently the results of March Madness go a long way to signing day. But honestly, does anyone really imagine grades matter at MD or Duke or any major school? Get a grip. It's pre-NBA ball being played and there isn't an honest coach among them. But Self et al have hungrier "boosters". I mean do u think Hairston, Joseph, Leslie etc etc r playing for a scholarship? Be real. Oh, and don't be so freak'n lame as to call out a shot on Len Bias. Man how lo can u go?

I met someone who went to high school with this guy. He said, while he was a great basketball player, he was a huge jerk, always getting in trouble. I bet Gary didn't want him for his personality.

note to ryan and beestle .... nice to see you have not changed ryan....still an ongoing complainer who loves to live by 5 star recruits....just never satisfied. and to beestle....fine with me if we never have any 5 star players. cant imagine that anyone, other then you and ryan, think that anyone really knows what an 18 yr old kid, or in some case, a 20 yr + "kid" will be like in college...personally, i like, no, i love garys picks. he knows them a lot better then you guys ever will. get serious, will you....you risk your reputation by these dopey comments. remember when you were 18 (or 20+) ...think anyone ever thought that at that age, you were mature enough and that your future was determined at that time? well maybe in ryans case that could be the case. hmmm, starting to make sense
