Weekend wrap – All-Terp matchup

Natasha Cloud and Alyssa Thomas will be Maryland teammates next season. On Tuesday, however, the two future Terps will be opponents.

Cloud guided Cardinal O'Hara (Pa.) to a gritty 33-23 win over Dowingtown East on Friday.

“After that first half, I had to talk to them in the huddle,” said Cloud, who had 10 points (after shooting 0-for-7 in the first half), four rebounds, one assist and one steal. “I told them we had 16 minutes left and I didn’t want anyone to leave this gym unless they had left everything they could out there.”

Cloud's Cardinal O'Hara squad will meet Thomas' Central Dauphin team in the second round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AAAA tournament Tuesday. Thomas scored 18 points and assisted on the game-winning 3-pointer in the Rams' 37-36 win over North Penn.

"We knew we weren't losing this game," Thomas said. "Our defensive intensity was high the whole game. And they started to get careless with the ball at the end, and we took advantage of it."

• WBOC.com posted a summary late last week of how each member of Maryland's 2010 recruiting class has fared this season.

Alyssa Thomas (Central Dauphin H.S., Harrisburg, Pa.) recently became her high school's all-time leading scorer as she led the squad to its second consecutive District title. Thomas has 659 points this season and 2,194 points in her career. She was recently named the 2010 District 3-AAAA Most Valuable Player after her championship game efforts.

• Terps point guard pledge Terrell Stoglin was edged out by Phoenix North guard Daniel Bejarano, an Arizona commitment, for The Arizona Republic's Big Schools (classes 4A-5A) Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Less than a week after Stoglin helped lead Santa Rita to a two-point win over Gila Region-rival Tucson Amphitheater for his first 4A-II title after three close losses in the final, Bejarano came back with two huge games to lead North to the big-school crown.

• Junior Maryland targets Quinn Cook and Mikael Hopkins powered DeMatha to an 80-70 win over Ballou for the Abe Pollin City Title Game in Washington.

Star guard Quinn Cook scored a game-high 28 points, forward Jerian Grant added 17 and center Mikael Hopkins 13 as DeMatha (30-3) won its fifth City Title in six years.

Matt-

God I hope Booth can get Quinn to commit this spring.
I think he is the exact type we need to get back to the top 5.
J-Will will be a junior, and Mosely will be a senior.
Obviously, I don't hold out high hopes simply because the way it has gone with the 5 star recruits the last couple years.
I have heard good things, like Gary is putting special attention into this kid because he is the PERFECT Gary Williams PG.

Have you heard anything as far as where he stands? I actually do think they will land 1 of Hopkins/Hubert, but obviously, with Gbijine off the board, Cook is the most important target in recent years in my eyes.
Anything?

Hey Matt,do you think politics may have played a role here, considering Bejarano is headed to Arizona and Stoglin to Maryland?

Matt:

What is the latest on the UMD vs. Georgetown hoops recruiting battle for 6'10" Moses Abraham: he was supposed to announce his choice yesterday (Sunday, March 14th)?

Johnny,

UMD never offered Abraham a scholarship. It was misreported. It is between Indiana and Gtown.

According to TerrapinTimes.com, Rivals.com, and TurtleSportsReport.com
Abraham has been offered by the Terps. I truly doubt that the Washington Post would do a front page story without substantiation although phony stories have appeared on other issues in various papers. Kids have even signed with schools that were never listed or were supposedly low on the list. Since the Terps have a number of bigs on their roster for next year, and Monroe will probably leave the Hoyas, I would bet he'll land there. Howver, I hope that GW does get another big as Pankey's injury could make him the next Burney.

Ryan -- I think there's a chance with Cook, but I can't speculate on how good of a chance it is. Maryland's season certainly helps, and the fact that he's good friends with Pe'Shon Howard doesn't hurt either.

Burt from Essex -- Bejarano is no slouch. He's rated higher than Stoglin by most services, and he put up big numbers. The AZ Republic guys probably saw him play more than Stoglin, considering he's in Phoenix and Stoglin's in Tucson.

Johnny Walsh -- I'd be stunned if Abraham ended up at Maryland. Here's the link that AreUKidding referred to.

Ryan:

Not to pick on you in the least, but why do you believe Cook is the "PERFECT" Gary Williams' point guard? As a starting point, what characteristics do you believe constitute Williams' "perfect" point guard? Then, how does that translate to Cook, a Top-5 rated player?

The reason I ask is simply because, at least from what I can tell, Cook appears to possess a lot of the same skills, as well as a developing body-type, of another former Maryland point guard, John Gilchrist. As talented as JG was, I don't think I need to remind you of the outcome of that experiment.

TNT-Gilchrist was a very good player, it was his attitude that was his problem. From most accounts I have heard Cook is a team player and has a good attitude which is our type of player. If his style is like J.C., bring him on. Also you can't put that all on J.C., that team had bad chemistry from the start. Nik was no sweatheart either. There was a buch of me players on that team. Probably what put Gary over the edge of going after Prima Donnas.

Rob:

I'm in total agreement with you about both Gilchrist's talent and the bad chemistry with the 2002-2003 classes, all of which practically set the program back 5-6 years until those classes were fullly "flushed." Frankly, I always believed that Gilchrist played with the proverbial "chip" on his shoulder that Williams' appreciates in his players and that Gilchrist often found a competitive fire lacking in his teammates. The chemistry issues, I believe, only helped create and then accelerated the eventual chasm that developed between Gilchrist (and/or those whispering in his ears) and Williams.

Again, I don't have too much information on and have never seen Cook play. If he's a "team first guy," then with his overall obvious talent, he would certainly make a very nice addition to the Terps (or any team for that matter) in 2011. Because he is so highly regarded and being recruited by virtually everyone, I simply hope that Maryland fans don't scream about Williams' recruiting "problems" if he opts to go somewhere else.

Bear in mind that Stering Gibbs in N.J. (Ashton's brother) is another highly regarded 2011 point guard and is, by all accounts, very high on Maryland. If the Terps do not land Cook, it appears that he would be a pretty good option for Maryland. At the end of the day, however, Williams will get the players that he believes will suit the team and program the best. This necessarily requires that the player want to be at Maryland.

will you crazy people stop writing blogs about people who they are compared to and such. No way you can compare J. Gilchrist to Q. cook different basketball I.Q.'s different in game decision making. On one hand you got J.G. who leads by scoring first while I look at Q.C. as a Steve Nash type of point guard. Besides Q.C. has ateam first attitude way more level headed and wants to learn and be taught. So be careful what you put out there because thee's recruits read the blogs too. With all this stuff you'll be writing about Gary Williams coaching an such when most of you never played ball under an official. The man has been coaching in my mind the best conference that has ever been assembled in college basketball. Calling for people heads (Ryan) then you still have to kiss the doo-doo maker when he has the type of season him and the terps have. So to all you (Ryanessess) out there if you gonna root for your team root for your team but keep your mental outbreaks to yourself thats what normal people do. Because you don't know what effect you may have on a recruit when your posting a comment. Leslie,Abraham,Redic,Cook,Hopkins,Hubert, come aboard we would love to have you aboard and you will be winners because you will be lead by the greatest mens basketball coach the Umd. has ever had and he is a shoe in for the H.O.F when he's "ready" to retire not when one of you scumbags come calling for his head or questioning his coaching skills like you national championships before. As always do before I say my peace lets kick Houston's @$$ and his back-up and all the other teams thats going to follow behind them. Let's go Terp's!!!!!!!!!!

TerpnTexas
I say Cook is the perfect GW recruit, because, the scouting reports say he is a relentless defender, and is a constant hustler. He doesn't slack it.
Gary is all about defense. Thats why Stoglin was recruited. Look at what Stoglin did to D Rose and John Wall in their head to heads when Stoglin was gaurded them.
Finally, they say Cook is a quiet, humble kid. He isn't your typical 5 star that needs their a** kissed.
I don't think he is anywhere close to the personality of Gilchrest. However, Gilchrest did give us an ACC Title, so I don't think we should be too hard on him. Yeah, he made some bad decisions by turning into a prima donna after that year, then leaving early the next year.
But, I don't compare the 2.
I was refering to the defense and his attitude. I have heard that he is very high on MD, Keith Booth is really pressing hard, and he according to Matt is best friends with Pe'Shawn Howard.

OK?

Terp'n'Texas no squab wit me n you buddy most of your comments you post are like from someone who's loyal to what Gary did the last 20 or so years and will always get the best out of his teams (last year team was picked to finish 9th in some college b-ball publications and they finish 5th made the tournament with that squad without a true "big man" and made a good run with that team). This year was picked to finish 5th in the acc and finish T-1st.. So what I'm sayin is all a coah and his staff can do is go out and recruit (Legitally) the best players in the country and "abroad" that want to come to the university and represent the terps. J. Gilchrist and those teams with McCray that did set us back but G.W. did a good job coaching those teams with upsets here and there and I might be wrong on who does all that whining and crying Is it Ryan or Rob.

No.1terpsfan-No crying or whinning here. I'm fine with the comments of everyone and I do not take this personally nor have I made it personal...it's a blog. Just a passionate fan.

I believe the TERPS are due for some good news soon. We are up to something big and I believe it will happen soon.

Rob-dang I have agreed with your last three posts, not sure if that's a good sign,or just my meds working overtime, lol. As far as Ryan goes,I'm still waiting on my drink,I was the first to post about the win total of the Terps when you said they wouldn't win 9 games.Matt?Everything I've seen and read about Howard and Stoglin say they are the real deals and both good defensively.Do you think we will see Maryland press more next year, with those two and Bowie, who might be the fastest Terp this year coming on strong near the end of the year?

Burt from Essex -- I think Howard is pretty good defensively already, but Stoglin has room for improvement. You might be on to something re: Maryland pressing more.

Matt -

Could you start a blog about this tourney coming to Balt. next weeknd (ESPN Rise). It is LOADED with talent !!!
Would like to know where all these high risers have committed to.

This is along the lines of Slam Dunk at the Beach. A tourney they used to have in Delaware over X-Mas
