Weekly recruiting roundup

Passing Arizona State commitment Corey Hawkins and Atlanta Hawks point guard Mike Bibby on Arizona high school basketball's career scoring list might be unrealistic for Terrell Stoglin.

But tonight, the Maryland point guard recruit has a great chance of claiming third place on the list.

With 10 points tonight in the second round of the 4A-II boys hoops tourney against height-blessed Chandler Seton Catholic, Santa Rita point guard Terrell Stoglin can bypass Portland Trailblazers guard Jerryd Bayless - a Phoenix St. Mary's grad - for third place on the state's all-time scoring list.

• Terps small forward signee Mychal Parker guided the Miller School (Va.) to a 90-83 double-overtime win over Blue Ridge.

Maryland-bound Mychal Parker led the way for Miller with a game-high 28 points off the bench to help his team win its sixth straight contest.

• Senior small forward Josh Langford, who has drawn some UM interest, led Lee-Huntsville (Ala.) to a 59-52 win over Fairfield.

Josh Langford scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, leading Lee-Huntsville past Fairfield.

• Maryland junior forward target Desmond Hubert powered New Egypt (N.J.) to a 55-45 win over Florence.

Desmond Hubert had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and blocked 13 shots for his 10th triple-double of the season.

• Terps junior shooting guard target Trevor Cooney led undefeated Sanford (Del.) to a 60-53 win over Hodgson.

"We played awesome. They are a great team. They are very well coached, and it was big for us to come out and get the 'W,' " said junior Trevor Cooney, who led the Warriors with 19 points. "We just played a little better."

• UM junior point guard target Sterling Gibbs guided Seton Hall Prep (N.J.) to a 59-39 win over Ridge.

Junior guard Sterling Gibbs tossed in 22 points and senior forward John Caprio contributed 12 points and 15 rebounds as No. 6 Seton Hall Prep raised its winning streak to 19 games in West Orange.

• ESPN HoopGurlz's Glenn Nelson took a look this week at the McDonald's All-American Game selection process, including Maryland-bound shooting guard Laurin Mincy's inclusion and Alyssa Thomas' exclusion.

Maryland-bound Alyssa Thomas of Harrisburg, Pa., is the most glaring omission from the McDonald's roster, according to many coaches on the high-school, club and college levels. Thomas is ranked No. 7 in the 2010 class by both ESPN HoopGurlz and All-Star Girls Report and is averaging 23.8 points for Central Dauphin High School. She also was not named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) team for a game to be played April 3 in San Antonio.

Thomas helped Central Dauphin (Pa.) advance in the postseason Wednesday night.

The Rams, champions of the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division, are headed to the conference title game via its 51-38 victory over Keystone No. 2 Lower Dauphin. Thomas' 23 points certainly helped the cause.

• UM center signee Alicia DeVaughn had a double double in Pompano Beach (Fla.) Ely's 47-42 loss to Dillard.

Dillard's Kianna Conner led all scorers with 15 points and Ely's Alicia DeVaughn had 14 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks.

Football recruiting

• The National Football Post named Terps quarterback Devin Burns one of the ACC's top early enrollees.

QB Devin Burns, Maryland: Burns could be one of many quarterback candidates in Terrapins camp competing for Chris Turner’s job.

• The Daily Press’ Norm Wood reports that Menchville (Va.) athlete Clifton Richardson has an early top five.

At this early stage, he said he's most interested in Virginia, Virginia Tech, Maryland, West Virginia and Miami. Richardson, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound junior who had 1,268 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns last season to go along with 118 yards receiving, has offers from all five schools.

• Roxbury (N.J.) offensive lineman Angelo Mangiro plans to visit College Park this spring, Phil Kornblut reports.

He will go to Ohio State during his spring break. Later in the spring he plans to visit Rutgers, Tennessee, Boston College, Maryland and Virginia. And this summer, when he's vacationing in Myrlte [sic] Beach, Mangiro plans to visit [South Carolina], Clemson, North Carolina and NC State.

Matt, why did Mychal Parker have to come "off the bench"? Was that some sort of disciplinary action, or is Miller School so loaded with talent that Parker is a 6th man?

I still don't understand why some on here don't want the 5 star recruits. How can you NOT want the best rated players in the country? Because a the few we have had didn't pan out as much as we had hoped?
IDK.

Mychal Parker coming off the bench?

Ray and Mike -- Parker's the best player on the Miller School team, so I'm not sure why he came off the bench.

Ryan, I look at it this way, during the season the coach wil run a system or tweak his system to fit the players that he has, during the offseason he recruits players that fit the system how he really wants to run it.

So if the players that fit his system are 5 star recruits and want to come to MD, all the better. But if the players that fit his system best are 3 and 4 star recruits you go after them.

I don't think it is a matter of not wanting 5 star recruits, it is a matter of wanting the recruit that best fits what a coach is trying to accomplish. Go after players that play a particular way and have the best chance to thrive and become good or great college players.

Scott-
I get that. I'm talking about players the MD offered scholarships too. Then they go elsewhere, and some are like, "we didn't want him anyway". I want the best rated players that Gary wants. I don't see how we can be anu other way.

Ryan-plain and simple, the kids today are not like they use to be. They want instant gratification, lack values, and few want to work hard and be coach, let alone scolded on national T.V. Most 5 stars are punks and punks don't play well at UMD (see Travis Garrison). Gary was a blue collar player and still has that mentality as a coach. He respects those who respect the game, work hard, and are coachable. How many of the 5 star recruits out there are not me players first and you feel are coachable? Let's face it, some of the biggest brats/Prima Donnas come from this area. There are too many AAU coaches, handlers and parents with warped values polluting these kids. It takes a man to play for Gary (see J Williams), and not a spoiled Mamas boy like T. Ross.

Here's to the MEN we have joining our team next year: Stogs, Parker, Panky, and Howard...we respect you!

Ryan,
If you have been rejected many times enough, then you will stop chasing the prettiest girls you meet and settle the girls who will go out with you, but you still may find happiness ever after.

And if you continue to ask the same questions again and again and get no answers, you should know when to stop, but as you ask still again, you should then get no good answer.

Ryan is right - it's a cop out to say we only want guys who fit our "system" and that's why we don't get any big time recruits. If that is the case, then somebody can explain to me why we offered guys like CJ Leslie and Tobias Harris scholarships?

Ryan, because Gary doesn't go after many 5 star guys. Gary goes after guys that he knows will listen to him and that he knows he can coach. So many of these 5 star guys are in it for the money (cough Calipari cough) and people overlook their massive character problems. Surely, they make teams great, so it's understandable why fans get upset when these prospects don't come to MD. It's how Gary's always been, though.

Rob,
Your posts used to be like Ryan's, but this one is totally different. You must be really enjoy this season. Let's hope it is a win today.

"Stogs, Parker, Panky, and Howard...we respect you!"

Let's not get carried away here. They are high school basketball players that committed to play at MD. Personally, that's not enough to earn my respect. Also, generalizing that all 5 star players are uncoachalbe, therefore we shouldn't recruit them is also silly to say. The fact of the matter is we do recruit them, we just don't land them. Do you really think Gary, Booth, and the other coaches pursue a player until it is determined he is too highly regarded to fit in at Maryland. Heck no. Maybe Gary will never be, and for that matter shouldn't be, a John Calipari clone or even a Jim Calhoun type coach, but I wouldn't mind a little more Jim Boheim in him. Keeping Duke and North Carolina out of the recruiting equation because everyone knows we can't compete with them...right...Syracuse is a comparable team to compare ourselves with. Bottom line is MD is exceeding what I expected this year, at least after the month of December. Am I optimistic about next year...not really. No one returning, beside Williams, has shown any reason to be excited about next season, but this is a conversation for another day.

But I think Gary does, obviously, want the highest rated recruits he can get. There are kids out there that are game changers that Gary could figure out how to integrate into his system without sacrificing the core of the Flex.

The problem is, duh, is that EVERYBODY wants those kids, and schools like K-State will throw 400K at Dalonte Hill to deliver Mike Beasley for a year. ONE year. (For what this is worth, Frank Martin is an excellent coach, and HE's the reason they didn't implode after Huggy left.)

Is that worth it? Not to me. As Matt and Prisbell at the Post have pointed out numerous times, there is a whole crazy-a** underworld scene in college basketball recruiting. You never can know the whole story with a kid.

Now if I thought Coach were lazy or unmotivated, I would have a problem with it. But I think he's doing a pretty good job. Plus rankings aren't everything and right now I wouldn't trade James Padgett for Tristan Spurlock.

Shreds-I use the word "most" and not "all." I stand by that statement. Can you not honestly say that the game has changed and many top players are coddled, spoiled and uncoachable? That why they like Calipari because he does not really coach them. With the talent he has had for the years he has had it, he should have more championships don't you think? How can you not respect these kids for standing by their commitments and playing for a demanding coach?

CHL-Definitely enjoying this season and a day like today. Have always loved the Terps and will continue to until the day I die. Does not make me a hater if I want a better team and express those views. Not all of my posts are negative.

Don't know Ryan but I believe he loves the Terps too. He asks questions that if you're a fan you have to consider.

I still want Yow out and Gary to recruit better. Who does not want a better football and basketball program?

What recruits were there today?

I think that Gary does his best work with kids that have been both coached and criticized before they get here. Moseley is the perfect example o this,a Baltimore Catholic League kid who grew up with discipline and instruction. Does anyone think that Steve Blake or Eric Hayes' dad's spent a lot time telling them how great they were every day ? I seriously doubt it. Use the last scholarship on Jonathan Graham of Calvert Hall and watch him turn out to be better than many of our highly recruited prima donnas that came here after the championship. Next year Greg Lewis from St. Frances should be the No.1 big man we look to recruit. Talent and attitude.

I think switching from Nike to under armor is a big reason GW doesn't land the 5 star recruits.

Nice win!!! This team showed a ton of heart. I will miss watching G.V. next year. Definitely one of the all time greats.

J Williams is developing quickly. Showed a great post move and moves really well without the ball. Got to love his hands.

Now we need to win out.
