Tobias Harris picks Tennessee

Tobias Harris, the five-star forward from Dix Hills, N.Y., has made his decision.

“I’m going to be playing my college basketball at the University of Tennessee,” said Harris, who announced his decision live on ESPNU Thursday night.

Harris picked the Volunteers over Maryland, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Syracuse and West Virginia.

“I really had a great relationship with Coach [Bruce] Pearl and Coach [Tony] Jones,” Harris said. “It’s just a family atmosphere down there. I got along with the players real well and it’s just a great opportunity and fit for me.”

Congrats on getting Tobias & his father, dont be suprized when they are gone after one year !

Another 5star that Gary can't get.

Please knock it off with the Gary-can't-recruit business. No, he didn't get Tobias. Yes, he has an EXCELLENT class for 2010. Plus, and ANY coach will tell you this, it's not who you recruit, it's what you do with them.

disagree with ryan ... corrected to read... "another 5 star that gary shouldnt want". give me juan, steve, lonnie (without the gun) and byron ANYDAY. i like the picks coming in...exciting (again)

To all the inbred Gary bashers,go back and read what Tobias Harris's father said after last weeks visit. He praised Gary to high heavens, but his son can go to Tennessee and not have to worry about their academic standards or classes.Case closed.Enough said, and oh by the way I don't see any of the Gary bashers on here after the Gilchrist situation taking Gary's side with USF facing sanctions and an investigation either? What a shocker.

chprjohn:

Do you have some information indicating that Harris' decision was linked to Tennessee's providing his father with a job, etc... (aka, Gus Gilchrest's "spokesman"). If so, please elaborate on same. If not, then I believe such comments are irresponsible and sound as little more than "sour grapes" over a kid simply making a choice to which he is fully entitled. Maintain your class as a Terp fan and be proud of what looks to be a very good incoming class (national Top-10 rating).

Besides, there is solace in Harris' decision. Leslie, although it appears a more remote recruiting prospect, remains available and won't sign until the Spring. This will give Maryland additional time to recruit him. As well, even should Leslie eventually sign elsewhere, I'm of the opinion that Maryland should then simply hold that scholarship for the following year as it helps spread the scholarship players over a greater number of years. Bringing in a 5 player recruiting class sounds exciting, but if, as what happened with the first 2 post NC classes, such a class does not live up to expectations, the program is stuck with those players for the duration of their eligibility which creates a competitive vacuum within the program for that period..

So, while it is unfortunate for Mayland that Harris opted to sign elsewhere, the Terps recruited him hard and remained in contention until the end. That's all any program can (or should) do. Harris is a 5-star recruit with multiple options. Since he clearly preferred Tennessee over Maryland, for whatever reason(s), I wish him well in his future endeavors.

For my part, yes, I'm disappointed that he chose another school. With his school choice, however, he will play in the SEC. This conference has little interaction with the ACC. Further, it has also become somewhat of a college basketball wasteland over the past couple of years. Anyway, as fans, it will at least be easier to watch his development and hopeful success there versus with either an ACC rival or as a member of a Big East school.

It would have been nice to have Tobias here but Gary would not have won a national title with him anyway, not in one year. He wants to be the guy just to elevate his status for the draft. In all his videos the only thing that I have seen him do was shoot everytime he had the ball I didn't see anything that would make him a good team player like passing, or defense. Remember he is just a kid and his recruitment was handled like a political campaign but the choice was his to make. MD fans don't be upset because I would rather have a 6'11 big man who can play great defense and shoot the three (Nastic)who will be here for three years rather than a one year wonder.

Its apparent Harris decided he'd rather play for a coach that rolls the ball out and lets his athlete's go play. HArris wanted to play "point forward", which doesn't really exist in the flex offense. I'm guessing his consideration for MD was driven by Gary Williams and his brother's influence. He'll likley perform comparably to Tyler Smith and JP Prince- good players that don't/didn't become great in college because they've got undisciplined, poorly coached guards playing around them.

Again, I don't know that I care that Harris isn't coming to MD.

And, for those that say you didn't want him, then, thats why MD is constantly fighting in the middle of the pack in the ACC and succeptable to losses to American and Morgan.
He just can't get the 5 star blue chip.
I don't know if they would have won a NCAA championship or not. Thats not the point.

And, with all of the rumblings that Ross is thinking about pulling his verbal, lets not give TOO much credit until they have all signed on the dotted lines.

I think choprjohn was trying to say that Harris' father is a handful to deal with. He was a sports agent and it seems that he has micromanaged his son's basketball life up to this point. The demands from the Harris camp may outweight the benefits from his talent.

Is MD still on CJ Leslies radar?

where you from ryan you talk about gary oh he cant beat teams like morgan st or american alot of teams struggle early in the year awhile back unc lost to santa clara and at the end won the whole thing.Harris went some where he can start 4 starters from tenn are seniors and he did not want to step on jordan or padgett foot from them developing in to better players .tenn might have him but if you dont win the championship what have you done nothing

Been down there to Tennessee... it's boring there and the media coverage is lame. Tobias'll end up being bored there too and will be one and done. He should have picked MD. He woulda had a lot more fun. Yea you can say what you want about all the money these guys get in the NBA, but there's never as much fun as you have as when you're in college. IMO ....dumb decision.

Tobias' final five were all good schools and good basketball programs. (I guess the other coaches who lost out can't recruit either) The final decision wasnt Gary's - it was up tp Harris and his family. They did what they thought was best for them. Pearl is an outstanding coach and TN is a good basketball program.

GW had a stretch where a combination of lack of (perceived) effort on his part when it came to recruiting, loss of excellent assistants, and some highly ranked players not living up to their ratings (or leaving school early or not going to class).

Through all of it we never had a losing season. Now he seems re-energized and re-focused about recruiting, has brought in some solid talent the past 3-4 years and we seem to be building up again.

Still, there are those "fans" who will never forgive Gary for being human and not always making perfect choices. Anything less than perfection(based on hindsight - which is always perfect) will ever be accepted in their eyes.

Get over it and yourselves. Either get behind the program (and take the bad with the good) or take your whiny negative poisonous attitudes and go "support" some other college basketball program. We dont need you.

Out coached and out played was the story in Maui. Gary needs to work harder on this team than he does on his golf game and tan. We played horrible perimeter defense, poor foul shooting, and bad decision making. G.V. has as much chance making it to the pros as the Fridge does becoming a Chippendale dancer. I know, Gary's a Hall of Famer. So is Bobby Bowden... The flex offense is old!

Why is JSC on this team? He would not even be a top D3 player. Gary loves project players and that is why we will not land a 5 star. Look at our whole team, all projects and it shows. We are consistently inconsistent. Gary loves it this way because when we knock off a number 1 he can bask in the glory.

Sorry for the negativity...just venting.

no size, skinny kids trying to out muscle man size teens. md hoops cannot hang with the elite programs because most of the time they are boys playing against men, athletic long and powerful, but gw thinks hayes, vazquez, tucker, and mosely can body up against the likes of the top programs players. no way um is a top 25 team. why does he not try to build teams like he had in 02 nd 03. holden, randle, nicholas type players coming off the bench and producing, with rebounds defense and wide bodies at least to block out, if he can't recruit a true top 50 player. i will be very surpised if those top two players end up at md.
