Selby enjoys Kansas visit
Lake Clifton point guard Josh Selby got a sneak preview last weekend of what it would be like to play for Kansas.
The five-star prospect, who is also considering Baylor, Indiana, Kentucky, Miami and Syracuse, took an unofficial visit to Lawrence for Midnight Madness and was impressed with what he saw, according to his mother, Maeshon Witherspoon.
“Kansas was a very good trip,” Witherspoon said. “The fans were crazy and supportive. I wasn’t expecting the fans to support the kids the way they did. Josh was in awe of how the fan support was.”
Witherspoon said she and Selby arrived in Lawrence a day before Midnight Madness to spend some time with Kansas coach Bill Self. Selby also got a chance to play pickup with current players, and reportedly fit in well on the court.
“He hit it off with the majority of the team,” Witherspoon said. “His host was [senior point guard] Sherron Collins. Him and Sherron hit it off. Him and [freshman shooting guard] Xavier [Henry] knew each other. [Selby knew Washington native and freshman forward] Thomas Robinson from him being from close to Baltimore. So basically Josh got along with the majority of players on the team. He didn’t come home and say, ‘I don’t like this one kid.’ He got along with everybody. The entire staff was very cool and made us feel very comfortable. They made us feel like they really want us there.”
Witherspoon is now in the process of scheduling Selby’s upcoming trips. They still plan on seeing all six schools, but “the next visit we’re trying to get taken care of is Kentucky,” Witherspoon said.
“[We’re still planning on a] spring decision,” she said. “After all the visits, it’s possible that he could commit early, but he’s still going to sign late.”

Of course, 5 star recruit from Maryland who is not considering U of Md. And Gary is looking for a redemption season. There is plenty of local talent to make U of Md a national power every year. It's like Florida State in football, there is no excuse for it. We should be a top ten program every year.

Wow! 5-Star player from Baltimore. Maryland's not one of his finalists. Can someone explain to me how this is Debbie Yow's fault? I'm sure it is somehow, right?

Ebe and Drew Miller Towson are your typical Maryland haters who know nothing about recruiting. Georgetown and Maryland both made a conscious decision not to pursue Josh Selby for a variety of reasons, all of which are very valid.

Do either of you know anything about this kid? Check how many high schools he's been to. already committed and decommitted once, and now looking at the usual suspects of institutions of higher education. Sorry, its not Gary's fault this kid has Miami on his list because the weather's nice. Kansas and Kentucky...shocking. This type of kid has always left the area for "greener" pastures...and that goes back beyond Gary or Debbie

If Gary cured world hunger you two would whine about him causing obesity. Seriously.
We have a great 2010 class already. Imagine if we can convince T. Harris to join us as well?

I guess Gary should not have had anything to do with Summers (Gtown), Greene (SU), Melo (SU), and the list goes on and on of good kids who were barely recruited by Gary over the last decade. I am glad that Md has had so much success over the past few years with local third tier recruites like Vasquez, Hayes, Dupree etc. Again the powerful list can go on and on. Talk about drinking the Terp Kool Aid. There is so much talent in the Baltimore/Wash area that escapes and lands elsewhere. There is no reason for it besides the fact that Gary is impossible to play for and he is a lazy recruiter.

Every time a big time recruit leaves the area, it's always because there are "reasons" why MD didn't pursue him that hard. There will be players that MD avoids but that isnt the sole reason why they haven't got the top HS talent in this area since Booth.

Ebe . . . I assume that you are here off of some other team's message board here just to raise a ruckus, and, as such, it would be better not to respond. Nevertheless, as folks other than you and I read this board and might believe the ridiculousness you are spewing, I figure I should say something (or two things).
1. Don't you dare come on here and insult our hardworking, talented, and capable players as "third tier recruites" [sic]. Unless tier one consists only of the top player in the class and tier two consists only of the next handful, you are dead wrong. I am not even going to argue against your insults.
But, let's just assume you are right and all of the players Maryland gets are "third tier." Well then, Gary must be one hell of a coach (which he is). Maryland has had one of the top programs in the country over the last decade (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2862455). I imagine that you think that more than 8 coaches out recruit Gary (which I too believe). Therefore, he must be a much better coach than many of them.
2. Players absolutely love Gary. They are loyal to him, love the program, love playing here, and love the fans. Think about the comments coming out of the locker room last year when the team was struggling. Gary is the exact opposite of "impossible to play for." He make players tougher, better, and smarter. As a result, they love him. Think Steve Blake or Juan Dixon would have had NBA careers without Gary Williams, come on!
Go back to whatever site you came from, or, in the alternative, learn some facts (and how to spell).

Look all those programs like Kentucky and Kansas already have stacked squads and when they recruit they promise the kids the world. The truth of the matter is there is only one basketball in the game and it doesn't matter how good you are someone is going to have to ride the bench. Kentucky has the top recruiting class in the nation but at least 2 of those top recruits will sit the pine. So if the kids from MD want to leave and go somewhere else instead of being a hometown hero let them go. As MD proved last year you can have the top players in the country on you team (North Carolina) and still get beat. My problem is that when they leave the state and possibly win a championship for another team like Carolina, Kentucky or Memphis and they come back home, your some other states champion but in MD you just a good college ball player. On those type of teams you don't dominate you participate.

Nothing wrong with this kid looking elsewhere. I wish the conditions in Baltimore and the surrounding areas were better for this kid and others. He wants to get away for a reason and whatever that reason...it is good enough not to pursue local schools. What we should focus on is not what Gary does not get but what he does with what he gets. If the kids graduate and/or make it to the next level and can support their families...in my book...that is a plus regardless where you go.

I was in Phx on business 2 weeks ago and the fans there are upset about Stoglin. I'm sure they are even more upset in Oregon about Ross. Sometimes kids want to leave the area. And I don't know about Selby in particular, but some kids do not have the grades to get into MD so MD does not bother. Finally, it is a difference in philosophy, but Gary doesn't recruit guys who publicly or privately claim they are one and done, i.e., Melo / Durant / Beasley. I for one am glad he doesn't.

The main thing fellows is, Gary likes to go after PG that are going to be here at least 3 years. Wall, is probably going pro after 1 and he might not even be eligible, which is really funny. I can't believe Calipari is allowed to coach.
Anyway, if we lose out on Harris and Tsfasack, then I will say Gary was like that video of the biker who got right to the finish line, then fell before crossing.
Especially after Duke has pulled what it has for next season, they are going to be back as well. Duke is also in on 6 of the top 10 OVERALL kids for 2011.
I agree that Gary needs to pull some 5Stars. But, Wall just isn't that guy. Nor was LS.
Harris is the one they should put all in for. Harris has said he doesn't plan on a 1 and done. He is probably going to come for at least 2 seasons.

Listen, no doubt Gary is a great coach, but stop make excuses for his recruiting. Ryan, are you trying to tell me that Gary would not snatch up a one and done recruit...hmmm why was he chasing after Stephenson? How about Harris? He could very likely be one and done if he comes. I also remember a guy name Steve Francis who was here for a short time as well. Let's be real, Gary has never lit up the boards with his recruiting prowess. He had some players that became great once at CP that were overlooked. That makes him a great coach, but not a great recruiter. Just like Cal is a great recruiter, but not a great coach. But people have a right to question why he can't land local talent. The Gary Apologist need to back off and stop making excuses for something that is real and a legitimate concern.

Uh, seriously? There's plenty of reasons and recruits to trash Gary's recruiting, but the 2010 class in general and Josh Selby in particular aren't among them.
In fact, by complaining about Selby you have shown a lot of cluelessness about recruiting. Maryland wasn't landing him, nor should they have targeted him. Think of John Gilchrist x 12. Sure, he's talented, but he wouldn't want to deal with Gary and Gary wouldn't want to deal with him.

Ben is spot on; lots to complain about Gary's recruiting in the past but Selby is a terrible example. Terps have a very good class already without Selby and hopefully will add some other good ones.
