Weekly recruiting roundup
The college options for Lance Stephenson appear to be dwindling.
On Thursday, Oklahoma City shooting guard Xavier Henry, a former Memphis signee, committed to Kansas. The Jayhawks were long thought to be Stephenson’s favorite, but Henry’s commitment leaves KU without another open roster spot.
Don't expect Lance Stephenson or John Wall to be talking about Kansas anymore.
Bill Self isn't. He said Thursday that he is done recruiting the 2009 class.
"For this year, it looks that way," Self said. "We can really focus in on the young underclassmen."
SNY.tv’s Adam Zagoria reported Thursday that the Stephenson family was “still weighing its options.” Zagoria says it’s unclear where Stephenson will turn next.
I have reported all along that Maryland was out and that it would come down to either Kansas or St. John’s. I also hear that the Maryland coaches are not that optimistic about landing Stephenson. That said, head coach Gary Williams made a trip to Coney Island last Friday to meet with the Stephensons.
Update: Zagoria broke down the Stephenson situation further on Friday, adding this tidbit about the Terps and Red Storm.
Word is that Stephenson does not want to stay local at St. John’s and thinks that Gary Williams‘ system at Maryland is too structured. Both of these things make sense, but both St. John’s and Maryland have put the fullcourt press on recently.
• After Columbus, Ohio power forward J.D. Weatherspoon withdrew his commitment from Xavier, Maryland was one of the first schools to offer the 6-foot-6, 200-pound junior a scholarship. According to the Columbus Dispatch, the hometown Buckeyes are now involved as well.
[Cameron] Wright's spot in the 2010 recruiting class could be filled by 6-7 J.D. Weatherspoon of Northland, who rescinded his commitment to Xavier two weeks ago and is again being recruited by Ohio State. Coach Thad Matta was at Northland yesterday to talk to Weatherspoon's counselors and get a copy of his academic transcript, Northland coach Satch Sullinger said -- typically a precursor to a scholarship offer.
• Long Island power forward and Terps target Tobias Harris was named New York Class A Co-Player of the Year earlier this week.
Harris, who transferred back to Hills West last week, averaged 23.5 ppg and 11 rebounds this season.
• Richmond, Va., small forward Travis McKie, a former UM target, committed to Wake Forest on Wednesday.
He said he chose Wake Forest over a list of schools that included Clemson, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Alabama, Georgia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth, Maryland and Boston College.
Football recruiting
• Milford Mill wide receiver Tyrek Cheeseboro sports offers from Maryland, Pittsburgh and Rutgers, according to Millers head coach Reggie White.
“He likes Maryland. He went up there and visited Ralph Friedgen and all the guys,” he said. “He’s been to Pittsburgh too and liked Coach Wannstedt. He has also been in touch with Coach Schiano, but right now he likes everybody and is real excited about the process. He likes everybody.”
• City wide receiver and UM target Adrian Coxson picked up recent offers from Michigan and Notre Dame.
Notre Dame is also one of Coxson’s newest offers and he said the Irish are intriguing because of the great history that program has enjoyed. Virginia Tech and Syracuse are also now involved along with Florida, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Boston College, Maryland and Georgia.
• Friendly safety Jordan Haden committed to Florida this week over offers from Maryland and many others.
“I’m real excited to be a Gator now,” said Jordan Haden, who is the brother of Gator starting cornerback Joe Haden. “I’ve been going through a lot with this recruiting process.”
• Pennington (N.J.) Prep safety Dontae Johnson told Rivals.com this week that the Terps are in his top four.
“Yeah, those two are still up there,” he said, referring to Maryland and Michigan State. “Just make sure you’ve got NC State and UConn up there, too.

Is there any timeline on Stephenson's decision? Also, doesn't this reflect badly on Self? Here he is telling both Wall and Stephenson how much he wanted them and at the last minute runs back to Henry. Reminds me of high school dating. It won't be long till Self or Calipari are involved in some recruiting scandal. I know, we will here from all the KU fans about how squeaky clean Self is and that he is the coach of the year...blah.blah.blah. Maybe they are off our site now that they are done with Stephenson...we can only hope.
Barton, Smith, Harris, and Oladipo we want you!!!

Will be a shame if Gary comes back from Coney Island without his hot dog :)

Matt,
To me it's remarkable that so many unnamed sources have been eager to write Maryland out of the picture for Lance, as if they have some sort of unimpeachable insider info. I'd be willing to bet that none of them have heard that straight from his mouth.
Why? Consider the following.
* It was Lance who decided to reconsider the Terps in the first place and said they were one of the three schools in which he had an interest. So are the insiders telling us he didn't mean what he said?
* In a late February interview Lance mentioned how James Padgett told him that he'd like it if the two of them could play on the Terps, to which Stephenson responded, "And I’m looking forward to that, too." Are the "insiders" telling us that he didn't mean that, even just a little bit?
* Nearly a month later when Adam Zagoria was assuring everyone that Maryland was out of the picture, Lance reiterated that the Terps were still on his radar. Who knows Lance better, Lance or "insider" Adam?
* Then last week Lance and his family welcomed Gary Williams into their home. To the objective observer that would indicate a definite interest in the Terps by Lance, but to the all-knowing "insiders" it meant nothing as they continued to assure us that Maryland was already Xed off of Lance's wish list.
Who knows, maybe Stephenson will go to St. John's or somewhere else besides College Park, but I don't think the "insiders" have the answer, either.
There are just too many positive signs pointing to the Terps that they've conveniently ignored to place much stock in their prognosticative abilities.

haha, wow, you are obviously delusional and extremely jealous of the elite programs in the country.
you should be thanking self for taking henry because now you at least have a shot at lance. but who knows, self may still end up pulling lance into the fold.
you also have no clue what you are talking about with regards to Self running to Xavier and spurning Wall/Lance in turn. learn some facts before you make wild accusations.

That “structured system” comment does not make any sense. This are 18-22 young adults, they need to be in a system with structure. I guarantee, the best programs are the best structured and organized. If that comment was made in regard to Gary’s offensive strategy, why was the Terps ever in the hunt, or even down to the last cut, when it is known they run a more patterned flex offense? I would assume that would have been vetted at the initial recruitment stages. When Gary does his due diligence, he opts to recruit guys who will flourish in his system (or at least thinks they will). And you would assume someone as highly-touted as Lance, would have established that perquisite early on. If Lance was bent on playing in a more dribble drive motion, one would think MD would not have been in it this far, much less considered in the first place. Regardless, if Lance is “Born Ready”, and a complete ball player like he thinks he is, he is going to score and excel. Too much is emphasized on scoring, it does opens doors, but it’s honing in the D and rebounding that keeps you in the “League”.

First of all, Lance is a one and done player, so all the talk and effort seems somewhat overdone, though it may change the image of the Terps (for better or worse) insofar as recruiting is concerned.
What was telling was Stephonson's comment that Gary's system is too structured. Mike Jones and Cliff Tucker are well aware of how difficult it is to be a natural scorer and fit into the Terps offense. A minute here, a minute there, no chance to get in the flow of the game. You have to wonder if Gary's ego plays a role in forcing players to conform to the system rather than allow some individuality. In the end, this my way or the highway hurts the Terps in recruiting and on the court.
Then, there is the double standard of certain players like Hayes who are often overmatched offensively and defensively, being allowed to stay on the floor. With all of Maryland scoring porblems the last few years, it's amazing that Tucker got so little time on the floor even after lighting up Carolina. Maybe Gary needs to check his ego a little.
Whether Vazquez stays or leaves, the Terps still have a decent backcourt with Bowie, Mosley, Hayes and Tucker. They don't need Stephonson. What they need is one more post player. My guess is Gregory will be one of the most improved players on the team next year. He showed flashes of being a real inside force last year and reminded me of James Gist at times. Williams and Padgett will contribute immediately. Milbourne is a decent small forward and should be more productive next season playing the three instead of the four. He was out of position last season.
Burney, Pearman, Goins and Dupree are all mid major players and should transfer. That would allow Maryland to put some real talent on the floor. After all, Gary proved he can still coach this year. And competing in the ACC is still a major draw.

Evaluation
January, 2009: Shooter alert! Ross was very impressive, he consistently drained 3's from everywhere on the court during the Flyin' to the Hoop in Dayton, OH. He is a very good athlete that also was able to make some high level plays off the dribble. For such a thin frame he is a surprisingly good finisher at the rim and is not afraid to take a bump on the way to the goal. In transition he is a head ache to deal with; he does a good job of sprinting the floor to an open wing where he can kill you with the trey ball or he can fill a lane and throw one down with authority. His handle is improved and he is able to shot fake and dribble by the defender to make a play for himself or a teammate. With his length and lateral quickness he has the potential to be a very good defender; as his body fills out and he develops his strength, this area will improve.
May, 2008: After this weekend, Ross may be considered the No. 1 2-guard prospect out West in the Class of 2010. He possesses a Jordan-esque frame with long arms and his athleticism is off the charts. He has excellent quickness and he had a number of resounding dunks over the weekend that were quite impressive. His jump shot is tight and he gets great lift on it. His shot is consistent out to the stripe and off the mid-range pull-up as well. If there is an area of his game that may come into question it's whether he can break down defenders off the bounce. Overall, if he continues to develop his skills and feel for the game, he has a chance to be outstanding.
Notes
Left Jefferson High (Portland, Ore.) in 2008 for Montrose Christian for the academics...Maryland, Georgetown, Louisville, Villanova, Oklahoma, Memphis, Tennessee and Kentucky are in the mix as well...

Charles, you're right, Self may still find a way to squeeze in Lance. He can call in some of his other players and force them out, he's good at that isn't he? Does not come across as a man of his word and that shows a lack of integrity. Win at any cost can only get you so far.
Are you trying to tell me that once Calipari left Memphis that Self and his crew of Manning and others were not on the phone to X? This was right before Stephenson was about to sign with Kansas wasn't it? Didn't Self send his boy Manning to go after Stephenson right before X? Wasn't Self at Wall's game when he "accidentally" bumped into him? How do you see it through your rose colored glasses Charles? The fact is it came down to two slime ball coaches meeting X in the lobby of a hotel. Sounds pretty classes to me. Looks like X bought the snake oil from one of the best.
