Stephenson pushes East to McDonald's win
Maryland shooting guard target Lance Stephenson came up big in crunch time for the East team last night in the McDonald’s All-American Game.
"He drives and dishes to the open man; he's unselfish," said [Derrick] Favors, a Georgia Tech-bound post player from South Atlanta (Atlanta, Ga.). "Lance is misunderstood sometimes; he's very intense and wants to always win."
It was a pair of Stephenson-to-Favors alley-oop dunks in the final 41.7 seconds which propelled the East over the West 113-110 on Wednesday at the University of Miami's BankUnited Center.
Stephenson finished with 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting, to go along with six assists, four rebounds, three steals and six turnovers in 23 minutes. NBADraft.net offered a mixed review of Stephenson’s performance.
Had a rough go of things committing 6 turnovers. Showed good speed in the open floor with the ball, but gets out of control. On one occasion, he got off the ground before passing causing a turnover showing his lack of fundamentals. He did make some solid plays down the stretch including the game clinching pass to Favors.
What did everyone else think of Stephenson’s game?

I thought he was making his choice yesterday? If so where is he going?

bm94 -- He delayed his decision and doesn't know when he'll announce. Click here for more info.

I think he has basically chosen Kansas but may still choose the Terps if he feels that Henry goes there. It is a good sign he has delayed his decision. I have watched him twice now and I am no great judge of talent but both times he didn't seem to blow me away as his press would suggest. Both times he reminded me alot of John Gilchrist in the ways he moves and dribbles the ball. I hope he does not have his personality. I think in any event he would be a fine addition as far as a scorer going to basket and finishing. I really like Vinson as well. I think I would take either. I would really love to see the Terps get Barton and Tasfarack and Buie or Harris next year.
I think Greives needs to come back and will.

I thought he looked erratic and overmathced at times. I was not particularly impressed, to be perfectly honest. Others players - Gallon, Cousins, Henry, etc. - looked much, much better.

This isn't a Gary kind of kid. I'd bet the only reason he's attending Stephenson's games and making an offer is because of all the flak he's taken this year.
Perfect scenario for Gary is for "Born Ready" to pick KU, Vinson to accept a UMD offer, and every to have taken notice of his very public recruitment of Stephenson.

The NY Daily News is reporting, as has been posted on zagsblog, that Stephenson delayed because Kansas is now going after Xavier Henry over him. Henry had committed to Memphis but now that Calipari is leaving for Kentucky, Memphis is releasing Henry from his commitment. Kansas wants him, but not him and Stephenson both, since they play the same position. This seems pretty classless on the part of Kansas to me. They went out of their way to make Stephenson feel welcome when he visited a month ago and now they are leaving him out in the cold. But the situation should increase Maryland's chances of him playing for the Terps. The player I feel for is Terrell Vinson. Vinson would look great playing for the Terps. Stephenson is a great player but he would likely only play a year, two at the most. Vinson is a legit inside threat and would likely stay for four years. Problem is that the Terps can't commit to Vinson until Stephenson decides. Either way, with Padgett and Williams coming, and presumably one more quality player, it should be Gary's best recruiting class in years.

Oh, and as for the question, he obviously had a better second half. He was less selfish than I thought he'd be. Took a few shots I thought he shouldn't have, but then the coach sat him down and when he came back in he was dishing everything to everyone. He missed a couple free throws, but had some nice sharp assists. So in the end he looked pretty good. Definitely has the strength and desire to play in the ACC or other quality program.

terpfansteve:
You contradicted yourself. What's the difference between what Kansas is doing and what Maryland is doing? Kansas is trying to get Henry over Stephenson but they don't want both, just like Maryland is trying to get Stephenson over Vinson, but not both. What's the difference?

Leave Gary alone and he'll get it done. Who else has a coach with a record of wins like him AND a national championship. He signs guys who can play and listen, and who are team players and reasonably decent students, so he doesn't get caught up in the dirty part of recruiting and paying and buying. That accounts for a lot with me. Don't change, Gary You're great just as you are.

Article makes Stephenson sound just like Vasquez. High turnover potential and out of control style offset by occasional briliiance. Works to get to the dance but not a recipe for prolonged success.

UMD student. Nobody knows this, but Gary went up to New York the past weekend. This why Stephenson delayed his decision. And as for Greivis I believe he said he was going to pro (meaning overseas or NBA) if Stephenson doesn't come here.

Lance is a student at Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, NY, not Brooklyn, MD.

Look I think Gary is a great coach but by no means is he a great recruiter. The Lance thing is a little fishy and I will tell you why. AS long as Gary has been a MD coach he has not gone after a top ten player ever not at the beggining, not after a National Championship, not ever. Why does it look so fishy, because of the timing of his recruitment of Lance. My problem with this is that great talent is geating recruited right out of this state yet we are the home state school that is getting out recruited. Why not put the full court press on a couple of very talented instate guys because lets face it, getting great MD talent is not going to be easy unless your a great recruiting team which MD is not, or your a winning team that goes deep into the tournament. As you can see with players like Buie, Taylor, and Epps an offer of early playing time, the ACC, and a great basketball coach just isn't enough to get them to sign.
