Video: Lance Stephenson speaks in Miami
Tons of Lance Stephenson news trickled out of Miami today, where the five-star shooting guard and Terps target delayed the announcement of his college decision.
Here are three of the most interesting links about Stephenson from today, plus two videos from McDonald's media day.
• John Calipari is leaving Memphis for Kentucky. Xavier Henry is a five-star shooting guard from Oklahoma City who signed with Memphis. So how does this affect Stephenson? The Topeka Capital-Journal explains.
“They were always in my top two, Kansas was,” Henry told a reporter from TheShiver.com, a Web site affiliated with ESPN. “So, of course, I’m gonna look at them again.”
Almost everything else about this situation is subject to interpretation. Whether or not Stephenson, who plays the same position as Henry, postponed his announcement because of Henry’s situation at Memphis is unclear. According to ZagsBlog.com, a recruiting Web site, Stephenson will wait another week to announce his decision.
• SNY.tv’s Adam Zagoria expounds on the Calipari-Henry-Stephenson-Kansas-Kentucky-Memphis conundrum, in addition to addressing Maryland’s place on Stephenson’s list -- specifically whether Gary Williams’ visit to his game on Saturday played a role in the delayed decision.
Was [Williams’ visit] a factor?
“It’s not about that,” Stephenson said. “I’m just waiting it out, make the best decision for me and my family. I’m just waiting it out.”
• The Kansas City Star explains how the Jayhawks’ scholarship situation could be worked out.
Even if KU was to get a commitment from Stephenson or Henry, the fact remains that the Jayhawks would have 15 scholarships occupied if Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich return to school. That’s two over the limit of 13. Kansas would have to cut two scholarships either through Collins and/or Aldrich’s early defection to the NBA or players transferring this offseason.
Now for the video, both courtesy of YouTube.
Here’s Stephenson explaining why he postponed his announcement.

Matt- how much does this suck for memphis? I love it because they talked trash, but, now they will lose everything that Calipari built. and all the recruits.
I will also say, I did not think Stephenson was coming to MD. But, after watching those videos and such, I think they actually might be in the forefront right now. Listen to when Lance slips up and says something like " It's not about who went further in the Tourney this year."
Then, his father says that Kansas never told them they were actually 2 scholarships off.
What do you think?

I was just thinking the same thing with regard to the number of scholarships available at Kansas. They currently have 14, FOURTEEN, non-seniors on their roster. Here is the list.
NO NAME POS HT WT CLASS HOMETOWN
2 Conner Teahan G 6-5 215 Sophomore Leawood, KS
4 Sherron Collins G 5-11 200 Junior Chicago, IL
10 Brennan Bechard G 6-0 185 Senior Lawrence, KS
11 Quintrell Thomas F 6-7 240 Freshman Newark, NJ
12 Brady Morningstar G 6-3 180 Sophomore Lawrence, KS
14 Tyrel Reed G 6-3 185 Sophomore Burlington, KS
15 Tyshawn Taylor G 6-3 180 Freshman Hoboken, NJ
21 Markieff Morris F 6-9 232 Freshman Philadelphia, PA
22 Marcus Morris F 6-8 225 Freshman Philadelphia, PA
23 Mario Little G 6-5 210 Junior Chicago, IL
24 Travis Releford G 6-5 200 Freshman Kansas City, MO
32 Tyrone Appleton G 6-2 203 Junior Gary, IN
40 Jordan Juenemann G 6-4 195 Freshman Hays, KS
41 Chase Buford G 6-3 210 Sophomore San Antonio, TX
45 Cole Aldrich C 6-11 245 Sophomore Bloomington, MN
54 Matt Kleinmann C 6-10 250 Senior Overland Park, KS
They clearly have more than a couple walk ons to get to that number. However, Kansas Head Coach, Bill Self, already has commitments from TWO other five star recruits including a shooting guard.
SG 6 Elijah Johnson (Cheyenne HS) 6-2/180 Commited to Kansas
PF 7 Thomas Robinson(Brewster Academy) 6-8/218 Committed to Kansas
According to Matt's research the number of scholarship players on the Kansas roster is already over the limit. Bill Self is also recruiting another McDonald All American, point guard John Wall, really hard. Self was even willing to commit a recruiting violation to try to get him.

Now that Coach Calipari is leaving Memphis and headed to Kentucky, John Wall really only has one choice left, Kansas. Also, McDonald All American shooting guard, Xavier Henry, just announced that he is decommiting from Memphis and wants to consider accepting the Kansas offer. All these great point/shooting guards are being recruited by Bill Self. He would need FOUR more scholarships above the limit to pull this off.
You Know.... Gary Williams has always been saying the cold hard truth. He never hid the fact that he was tight on scholarships, and that he was already at the limit. He is always straight forward about how he thinks the prospect will fit into his program. He just won't lie to a recruit to try to get him to sign. It's not his way. He's just not comfortable doing that. He just won't compromise.
Gary stands out in such stark contrast to the denizens of the darker side of college recruiting who will do anything to get every McDonalds All American into their school. Consider for a moment, Bill Self. He just admitted he broke NCAA recruiting regulations and tried to down play it as if it were nothing. Can you trust a man like that?
Bill Self APPARENTLY FAILED TO TELL ALL THESE MCDONALD ALL AMERICANS THAT HE WAS ALREADY OVER THE NCAA SCHOLARSHIP LIMIT. (There's no humilation quite so acute as finding out in public that you've been duped.)
HE FAILED TO TELL LANCE STEPHENSON THAT HE WAS ACTUALLY RECRUITING ANOTHER MCDONALD ALL AMERICAN TO PLAY POINT GUARD, JOHN WALL.
HE FAILED TO TELL LANCE STEPHENSON THAT XAVIER HENRY NOW WANTS TO CONSIDER THE KANSAS OFFER FOR THE SHOOTING GUARD POSITION.
*****************************************************************************************************************
HOWEVER, NONE OF THAT IS NEARLY AS IMPORTANT AS THE FACT THAT SCOUT.COM CURRENTLY HAS LANCE STEPHENSON LISTED AS BILL SELF'S SMALL FORWARD RECRUIT.

As I stated in my previous post, Lance will have to fit into Bill Self's prodding Kansas style of play or he'll just pick a different McDonald All American off his bench to do it. Can Lance really believe anything Bill Self has promissed?
At any rate, this really is a hard decision for an 18 year old to make. So, no matter what his decision ends being, I wish him well.

matt- Are there any rumors as to who is leaving? I get the impression that Vasquez might not be the only one taking off. I had heard that Dupree is miserable. Gary rides him very hard and he is not the type of player to respond to that kind of coaching. He is very soft.
Also, I had saw some posts saying that Goins is thinking of going back home to a smaller school were he can play.
That would be 3 spots. I truly hope they land lance just for the national attention that it will get and in a year where you see how great Gary coaches, then can shut up the critics about not getting the Blue-Chippers despite the programs history and win totals. However, I still think Vinson is the more important player. He is a 4 year guy. He is a baller. He gives 110 percent all the time and actually reminds me of Dennis Rodman in his ability to fight for boards and steals.

Matt-
Is there any reason that the terps can't land Stephenson and Vinson? If Stephenson commits will Vinson go elsewhere?

Ryan -- After watching those videos I tend to think the Stephensons will take their time and wait until the dust settles. As for the Terps' scholarship crunch, I'd rather not speculate on who might leave. But the staff's pursuit of Stephenson and others suggests they're not concerned about exceeding the scholarship limit (i.e. they know there will be some attrition).
CC -- I don't think the Terps would take both, just for the sake of roster composition. I expect other '09 guys to emerge in the next few weeks as different coaching situations shake out. I imagine there will be a bunch of guys switching schools.
