Towson Catholic reloads

Gone are Larry Bastfield (Toledo), Brandon Greene (Robert Morris), Terrell Bruce (Missouri State University-West Plains) and Vinny Breckinridge (Patterson (N.C.) School) from Towson Catholic’s 2007-08 MIAA A conference championship team.

It’s a lot of production lost to graduation, but according to Owls head coach Josh Pratt, the cupboard is hardly bare.

Devin Spencer, a 5’11 shooting guard, returns to TC for his senior year after averaging nine points per game last season.

“He had a real good summer [with Team Melo],” Pratt said. “Harvard, Holy Cross and Navy have all expressed interest. He just took the SAT, so we’re waiting on that to come back.

“He’s a good shooter and great decision-maker on the floor. Now he’s becoming more of a combo guard. He’s more than just a shooter now; he’s a great floor leader. I love his work ethic. He’s totally transformed his body. ... At the Navy team camp he shot the lights out. I took him down to Charlotte for their elite camp and he played very well. He’s not quite big enough for the Atlantic 10, but they really liked him.”

Pratt also returns senior Malcolm Sizer, a 6-foot-4, 254-pound center.

“We did this SPARQ training and he shattered the [power ball] record, six feet past the national average. ... I’m trying to get him some football looks [from] Catholic, a DIII school in football and basketball, Frostburg State. ... He’s an unbelievable athlete.”

Towson Catholic was also the beneficiary this offseason of two high-profile junior transfers -- Raheem May-Thompson, 6’7, and Levi Noel, 6’5.

“Levi’s a transfer from Montrose Christian. Raheem is from DeMatha,” Pratt said. “Both played last year for them. They’re pretty good players. Raheem’s as good as Brandon Greene. He can be that type of player. He could be a first-team all-league player.”

Pratt said Loyola, George Mason, Fordham, Navy, Towson and James Madison, among other schools, have attended open gyms to monitor some of TC’s players. Several Atlantic 10 and Patriot League programs have expressed interest in May-Thompson, Pratt said.

“I’ve got some other pieces, [too]” Pratt said. “We’re going to surprise some people this year.”
