Weekly recruiting roundup

Barring a completely unforeseen turn of events, Georgia offensive guard Ricky Hart won’t sign with the Terps come February.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Maryland withdrew its scholarship offer to Hart.

Charlton County coach Rick McWhorter said Maryland had concerns about Hart meeting college entrance requirements. “We were worried about this happening,” McWhorter said. “[However] Maryland said they’d love to see him go to a prep school next year.”

• Quince Orchard defensive tackle Jason Ankrah and cornerback Travis Hawkins are formulating their lists of official visits. QO head coach Dave Mencarini updated The Washington Post‘s Josh Barr with their plans.

Mencarini said that Hawkins and Ankrah will visit Michigan on Oct. 4. Hawkins also plans to visit Maryland, Oregon and two other schools while Ankrah also plans to visit Virginia Tech, Penn State and Tennessee, according to Mencarini.

• Sam Webb, who covers Michigan recruiting for The Detroit News and Scout.com, caught up with Maurice Jenkins, father of Good Counsel linebacker Jelani Jenkins. Jenkins talked about his son’s recruitment and criteria for picking a school.

"Basically we have a matrix that we did on each school," Maurice Jenkins explained. "Part of that matrix is the strength of academics and academic facilities. In Michigan's case, they have an awesome facility there, so you can see they take the academics very seriously.

"One other criterion was that we wanted a team with national exposure that potentially plays in the (BCS) bowl games. Diversity is very important, as is a city that we feel is safe. We want an environment that is diverse where they have respect for different people.

Basketball recruiting

• Maryland freshman center Steve Goins finally passed through the NCAA Clearinghouse this week. The Washington Post‘s Steve Yanda caught up with Terps coach Gary Williams, who explained why it took so long for Goins to be cleared by the NCAA.

… Goins was late to pass through NCAA Clearinghouse because the Chicago public school system recently switched computer systems and that prevented Maryland from getting the necessary papers to the NCAA until September. Williams said another factor in the delay was that Goins needed to pass two summer school classes (he received As in both) before his transcripts could be sent to the NCAA.

• Patterson (N.C.) School power forward Arsalan Kazemi is focused on two schools, according to Zags Blog.

“The only two schools he’s definitely going to be visiting are Seton Hall and Maryland,” [Patterson coach Chris] Chaney said.

“It will probably be back-to-back. Seton Hall wants to go first. I think Maryland wants him to visit Oct. 18″ for Midnight Madness.

• Brooklyn, N.Y., forward James Padgett canceled his visit to Pittsburgh last week. According to Zags Blog, Padgett is considering at least four other schools.

Padgett said he was uncertain what schools he is certainly considering, but said Maryland, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Providence were in the mix.

“I’m not even sure, really,” he said. “(There are) a lot all coming at one time.”

• Hargrave power forward Chris Braswell visited to College Park last weekend. The former Georgetown commitment told Hargrave coach Kevin Keatts that he enjoyed his visit.

“He had a good visit (to Maryland),” Keatts said. “He got back (Sunday) evening. I talked to him briefly on the visit and he was enjoying it thus far.

“He’s going to Indiana this weekend, and on Oct. 4 he’s going to go to Virginia Tech. His last visit will be with Charlotte Oct. 18 for Midnight Madness.”

• DeMatha shooting guard Victor Oladipo, a 2010 prospect, has an offer from Maryland and several other major DI programs.

Junior forward Victor Oladipo holds offers "all over the place," according to Stags Coach Mike Jones: Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Providence, Massachusetts, George Mason, Auburn and a few others.

"But I don't think he's anywhere near making a decision," Jones said.

• Georgetown Prep point guard Markel Starks committed to the Hoyas earlier this week, according to The Washington Post.

"My phone has been ringing like crazy," Little Hoyas Coach Dwayne Bryant said. "Angry coaches. You have no idea."

The 6-foot-1 Starks averaged 14.2 points per game last season. He also took unofficial visits to Maryland, Wake Forest, Georgia and Georgia Tech before taking a trip to Georgetown on Tuesday, Bryant said.

Hello Matt,
Again you have provided a big time Terp fan like me with excellent information, I really hope you can cover the Terps one day soon. I was just wondering when you estimate we will hear about Jin Soo Kim for this year and the chances of getting Jordan Williams for '09 if he will committ early? Also, I know you mentioned Isiah Epps as a big time target for PG, what are the chances he will pick Maryland, seems like they both have a high mutual interest? Finally, if JSK is accepted, how do you think the team will do this year? I think they will surprise some people and Gary Williams will have them back to where they belong. Thank you so much, keep the great b-ball posts coming.

Kevin -- Thanks for the kind words. I haven't spoken to Williams, but scheduling his first official visit for Maryland is a very good sign. The Terps can offer plenty of playing time, and started recruiting him relatively early, so I'd say they're in good shape. Epps has listed UM and Pitt as his top two, so they're obviously in a good spot there. As for Kim, now that Goins is cleared, I've got to believe that it shouldn't be that much longer for Kim. He was reportedly a good student, so we'll see. He'll have to add some strength, but he could carve out a small supporting role as a shooter off the bench. I see the Terps as an NIT team this year due to their thin frontcourt, but they do have some nice pieces. A lot probably depends on Dupree (is he in shape?) and the maturation of guys like Bowie and Tucker.

Nice insight Matt. I have never heard you say that before. The outlook for the next two classes looks pretty pathetic for the Terps. The need a 5 star frontcourt recruit. The ones we have are slow and fat or weak. Gary needs to visit some living rooms.

according to terrapintimes, James Padgett is now a TERP!!!!!!

Dig your blog. Zagsblog has Padgett committing to Maryland. Good get for the Terps. He can run, and Gary's teams get up and down. Do you know if they are still looking at Jordan Williams? I would assume so, since they need some frontcourt scoring as well!

Hey Matt,
Just read Zags blog and apparently James Padgett gave MD a verbal commitment this evening. Have you heard anything?

they are saying jordan williams is a "must get", he is actually on campus for his official this weekend!!

Thanks for all the comments on Padgett's commitment. Pico, Jordan Williams is reportedly on campus, so I'd say he's still the No. 1 target for UM. Williams and Padgett would be a really solid two-man class.

Matt, check out the maryland website the hoops team has the new roster up and kim is on there! I suspect Vasquez will think about going pro after the season so maryland should have 3 scholarships available by spring and maybe 4 if Gregory and Dupree play as bad as last year!! Padgett is one and they probably will pick up Williams or Kasemi!!!

Matt, what has happened to the women's basketball team with regard to recruiting. It seems like all of the top prospects are going elseware. It's been a lot of fun watching them over the past few years and I'm afraid that they are going to fall back to the pack unless they can bring in some top notch recruits over the next couple of years.

George -- The Terps cast a really wide net for '09, so it's no big surprise to see many of these targets head elsewhere. Destiny Williams seems to be the top target still out there. I wouldn't stress about Frese's recruiting; she'll get it done.
