Terps land New York power forward
Brooklyn, N.Y., power forward James Padgett verbally committed to Maryland yesterday, becoming the first member of the Terps' 2009 recruiting class.
Padgett, 6 feet 7, picked Maryland over offers from Pittsburgh, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall and several others.
Padgett told the New York Daily News that he chose UM for Gary Williams' track record in developing players for the NBA.
"Coach Williams has a real good track record with power forwards like me," Padgett said. "The ACC is one of the best conferences in the country and I will improve playing against that competition."
Padgett's coach at Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, Dwayne "Tiny" Morton, told Zags Blog that Padgett has to get stronger, but he has a chance to contribute early in College Park.
“He’ll be a tough power forward for them,” added Lincoln coach Dwayne “Tiny” Morton. “I think he can have a nice college life, go to a campus and be coached by probably a Hall of Fame coach. And he’ll probably get some playing time early in his (college) life.”

That's a great pickup for the Terps! WTG Gary. But the first pickup for the Terps in 2009? What happened to Jin Soo Kim?

Adam -- Kim reclassified to 2008, so he's on campus right now. He's just waiting to be approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Hello Matt,
This is a great pickup for the Terps. Do you think this will help in the recriuting of getting Jordan Williams? If Maryland gets both of them, that seems like it will set them up nicely for a few years with some post players. BTW, I hate to disagree with you but I think the Terps will make the NCAA this year, I'm always I guess overly optimistic about my team. But I guess we will have to wait and see, I am hoping they come in with a chip on their shoulder. Great work as always and thanks again!

Any stats on him for his junior year?

I believe he put up around 10 pts/10 rebounds as a junior, but he played with Lance Stephenson, who's supposedly a chucker, so his scoring was limited.

I am glad to see that UM has picked up someone for the 09 season and it seems to me that UM is trying to make a late run at recruiting. I know that they have some issues keeping people, some admin issues and some off the court issues. None the less I have looked at everyone in the ACC and who they have recruited for the 08 and 09 season and for the most part with the exception of BC Maryland is probably dead last in recruiting in the ACC. That is not just this year and next year that has been the case for the last four years. They have never had a top 5 or a top 10 player as long as Gary williams has been the coach of the team period. I don't understand that and I don't know if we are even going after these guys or not but it never happens. I love Maryland and I don't believe in cutting the kids up in the paper is going to make the team any better I would never do that but the fact still remains that when it comes to recruiting kids Gary's effort to get the top tier guys in the country is not there. I am not a fair weather fan win lose or draw I am a terp, but explain to me what we don't even go after these guys in the first place you can't get lower then last place.

Do you even want a top ten player? A one-and-done who could be Michael Beasley, sure, but could also be JJ Hickson, a chemistry killer. And he won a national championship. Don't underrate depth and coachability and overrate recruiting rankings.
Gary's a good coach. He's targeting some top 75 guys and he'll get a few. More important to get guys who fit rather than guys with big names (and huge egos).

Amazing news! I hope he doesn't change his mind like Jennings and Gilchrist. Also, I'm starting to feel good about MD this year. The backcourt is solid, maybe Goins can have a decent year, we can make the dance. It looks like UM is starting to right the ship after a terrible summer.
