Weekend wrap -- Gilchrist, Adams and more

Ever wonder what went on beyond the scenes with former Maryland center recruit Gus Gilchrist? The Tampa Tribune has your answers.

The Florida newspaper investigated the relationship between Gilchrist, who is still waiting for the NCAA to rule on his eligibility status at South Florida, and his longtime trainer, Terrelle Woody. The entire story is definitely worth the read.

Throughout his dizzying basketball travels - at age 18, he already has attended two high schools and signed letters-of-intent with three universities - Gilchrist has been aligned with Terrelle Woody, 38, his personal trainer, adviser and spokesman.

Now, Woody is in line for a job in the USF athletic department, a non-coaching position that has not been advertised and for which school officials say "there is no record" of what the job might pay or what the qualifications are. Woody does not have a college degree.

• According to Zags Blog, Dix Hills, N.Y., forward Tobias Harris, a 2010 prospect, is scheduled to visit College Park today.

• A couple of Maryland football commitments had rough starts to their senior seasons. Running back D.J. Adams was stifled in Norcross’ 21-6 loss to Camden County (Ga.).

Maryland commitment D.J. Adams found few holes in the fast Wildcats defense. He gained 27 yards on 13 carries and lost a fumble.

Quarterback Danny O’Brien struggled in East Forsyth’s season-opening loss to Rocky Mount (N.C.). The UM commit went 7-of-16 for 83 yards and one interception in his team’s 43-13 defeat.

• Terps linebacker commitment Bradley Johnson checked in at No. 38 on The Roanoke Times’ list of top senior prospects in Virginia.

38. Bradley Johnson, 6-1, 205 LB, Dinwiddie – Ex-Rockbridge coach Billy Mills is building a power at Dinwiddie, with Maryland-bound Johnson leading the way.

Nice find on the Gilchrish article. It all makes sense now. No job in College Park for Woody, and not only no job but a swift kick out of the gym, and his boy hits the road with him.

Good for Gary Williams and UM. It's a shame some folks can't take a deep breath and realize there is more than what you see or think on the surface before giving criticism without facts. Gary deserved to be slammed for Evans (that kid had no business being in College Park outside of working at a gas station across the street from the campus) but obviously Gilcrist is another kid (like Mayo) having his strings pulled by an adult looking to cash in.

As for D.J. Adams, Camden County is a powerhouse out of Brunswick (south of Savannah) in south GA. No surprise there. Once Norcross starts playing games against DeKalb Co. schools the numbers will be much better.

Why do you suspect Steffy will have passing number similar to our QB recruit?

Guys. Can we remember Steffy is a COLLEGE KID. He does all the right things, goes to class, works in the community and all around seems like a great kid. Give him a chance. If he plays well, keep him in. If not, Turner will play. The wrong decision was made by Friedgen but don't fault the player.

I have one question for the last ten years the UM basketball team has probably seen the top players in the state of Maryland go to other schools, and a lot of them to colleges out of the state. My question is, what is the method of evaluating the players besides grades and off the court issues because it's hard to see players like Carmelo Anthony, Donte Green, Michael Beasly, and Kevin Durant play for other teams outside UM. My second question is when I look at the ACC recruiting I see other ACC teams pulling in top ten recruits and it makes me wonder why we don't even try?

Even though his numbers were off O'Brien did have 2 TDs, 1 running and 1 passing

Matt, I heard Terrell Vinson-visited MD today-any news on if he liked his visit and when he will make a decision??

Good for Maryland and Gary Williams and also Virginia Tech for not caving in to Gilchrest's handler (leech is probably a better word) Hey Bob from Towson! Are you out there? If so, tell us how you can blame Gary Williams for this one.
