Taylor commits to Pitt

Maryland’s 2009 basketball recruiting class won’t include National Christian Academy’s Dante Taylor.

The five-star power forward verbally committed to Pittsburgh yesterday, choosing the Panthers over offers from UM, Connecticut, Kansas, Syracuse and many others.

"He's a Big East player," National Christian coach Trevor Brown told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "He's rugged. He plays hard. He's athletic, and he doesn't mind playing around the basket. I think he will fit in well in the Big East."

Some of Maryland’s top remaining ‘09 targets include Montrose Christian forward and Baltimore native Terrell Vinson, Brewster Academy (N.H.) power forward Thomas Robinson and Petersburg, Va., center Cadarian Raines.

Any updates on Kim, Goins or Darden? If Goins gets qualified and comes to Maryland, is it less likely Darden comes to Maryland? What about Joey Cameron, who has been on campus at lest twice. Whatever happened to Ken Bowman?

No word on Kim or Goins just yet, but I think both will make it through. I think you're right on Goins vs. Darden -- they probably wouldn't take both, and Goins has the clearer academic picture apparently. Cameron committed to New Orleans. I don't know where Bowman surfaced, but academics were always a concern.

Do you know anything about Chris Braswell reopening his commitment to Georgetown? Are the Terps a possibility for this 2008 PF?

Uh-oh, the Maryland boards are going to blow up on this one. By all accounts, he was, far and away, the Terps' top priority recruit for 2009. While every school loses recruiting battles, all of the criticism levied against Maryland's program/Gary Williams will only magnify this "loss." I hope and trust none of the other potential 2009 recruits will feel slighted by the attention paid to Taylor through this process.

On that note, I wonder what, if any, relationship this signing has with Williams' recent recruiting effort/surge towards Terrell Vinson. It seems logical that he had some inclination, if not outright knowledge, as to which way Taylor was leaning.

Matt, as always, thanks for your up-to-date reporting. Your diligence on area recruiting is greatly appreciated.

Pete -- It's a possibility, but I'm not sure how likely it is. We'll see.

Terp 'n Texas -- Thanks for the kind words. I think a lot of the message boarders expected Taylor to go elsewhere for awhile now -- not that that completely diminishes the 'loss.' Either way, I think it's safe to say GW has cast a wide net for '09 targets. Taylor wasn't the only guy he was after (although he was the most highly rated.)

Maryland was at the top of Braswell's list before Georgetown moved in. Apparently he did not academically qualify and will take a year in prep school before attempting to go D1.

Matt- Now that Taylor is off the board, which recruits are at the top of Gary and his staff's board for 09?

Jeff -- Montrose Christian forward Terrell Vinson, Brewster Academy (N.H.) power forward Thomas Robinson and Petersburg, Va., center Cadarian Raines.

According to ESPN, Steve Goins has signed an LOI to attend Maryland and his academics are in order, meaning the Terps have at least added some size to their severely undersized frontcourt. From what I have heard, he is just 17 years old, unpolished, will have a rough time competing in the ACC and often goes missing during games but has a tremendous upside. The lack of interest from mid to major D1 schools was a surprise, but maybe the Terps got lucky. After all, you can't teach size.

DONT WORRY FOLKS, MARYLAND is saving their ships for 2010 and wil get 3, 4, stud players out of that class. i am talking 5 star and 4 star kids
Taylor will be a good player but dont get me wrong he aint kobe. dont sweat it.

thanks matt- you do a great job.
