Weekend hoops wrap

St. Frances guard and Maryland signee Sean Mosley teamed with Mount St. Joseph center and Georgetown commitment Henry Sims last night to lead the U.S. All-Stars to a 123-85 win over the Capital All-Stars at the Capital Classic at Comcast Center.

Sims scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Mosley scored 16 points and dished out six assists. Mosley told The Sun that last night was his first game at Comcast Center.

"I just came out and tried to put on a show," Mosley said. "I want to play at the college level and play in front of big crowds. It was a wonderful experience to finally get on the court here."

• A new name for Maryland’s 2008 class emerged late last week. According to TerrapinTimes.com, Motlow (Tenn.) State Community College shooting guard Tyree Evans took an official visit to College Park over the weekend.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that Arizona is also interested in Evans.

Arizona is trying to arrange a recruiting visit for Motlow State (Tenn.) Community College guard Tyree Evans, who is the third-highest scoring guard in Virginia prep history, according to his coach.

Evans' coach, Bobby Steinburg, said Friday that Evans is visiting Maryland this weekend and is being pursued by Arizona, Kansas State, Florida State and others. Steinburg said Evans has interest in Arizona.

The Star's story also touches a little on Evans' past, so you'll want to click on the above link.

• The Boo Williams Invitational AAU tournament took place this weekend in Hampton, Va., and plenty of Terps targets and Maryland players were on hand.

In the 16-and-under division, the Baltimore Stars fell just short of the title, dropping the title game to Florida-based Team STAT.

The Baltimore Stars were led by Antonio Barton's 16 points. Tobias Harris scored 14 while C.J. Fair pitched in with 10 points in the defeat.

TurtleSportsReport.com’s Seth Hoffman ranked the top 10 UM targets at Boo Williams. The whole report is definitely worth the read, but here’s some of what Hoffman had to say about National Christian Academy junior power forward Dante Taylor, who suited up for Team Melo this weekend.

... He did most of his damage at the free throw line, where he went 16 of 23 in the three pool-play games. Maryland and Pitt appear to be the frontrunners at this point, with the Terps having a solid shot provided the staff makes a concerted effort to show him he's the top priority. ...

Hi Matt,

Why is MD targeting Tyree Evans when we're suppose to have Mosley and Bobby Maze coming in next year to fill Gist and Osby's scholarships? And what about Ken Bowman? Is he still a 2008 target? I haven't heard of anyone planning on transferring out, so where are these scholarships coming from?

Dave -- There are rumors out there that one of the guys you mentioned might not come. I'll write something when I know more than rumors, but if you poke around on turtlesportsreport.com's free message board, you can find what I'm talking about. Bowman probably won't happen. Academics were an issue there. Your guess is as good as mine regarding scholarships.

Please guys give this basketball recruting a break. Md's underachieving season is over let it rest until next fall. Spring is here and baseball is in full swing.please stop talking about Maryland Basketball. I am doing my best to stay off of your blog, but when i see something about basketball,i just can't help myself. ENOUGH ENOUGH

Not only are the rumors strong that Maze is not coming, but now the buzz is Vasquez is gonna go pro. Any truth to this?

Keep the BB recruiting stories coming. You do great work. To me the recruitiung in the off-season is as important as the games, so any word about who is coming or leaving the Terps is much appreciated.

Would be surprised if GV leaves, as he is not ready at this point for NBA. Another year with the Terps is needed to refine his game. At the NBA level, only a few get the benefit of a long learning curve. What is the deadline for deciding?

vasquez didn't sign with an agent, at least not yet.

also, i've heard that along with maze that mosely doesn't have the grades as well.

ouch.

You guys keep losing sleep over all this Md recruiting. It must be pretty bad that you don't have anything else to do in the off season but to worry about Basketball recruits. I heard this i heard that. Please give it all a BREAKE. Enjoy the Hockey playoffs, the orioles fast start, The upcoming NFL DRAFT, but please put MD basketball to sleep for the year. They will be lucky if they duplicate this year's sad showing with anothe road NIT game.

bob, you are well versed and well spoken in the lunacy that is college recruiting. To ask us Terps fanatics to take a break from the men's basketball recruiting would be akin to asking NFL fans to stop worrying or caring about the upcoming draft for their respective teams. As an aside, now that Gary has a little continuity w/his assistant coaches, we should see an uptick in the program. And for the foreseeable future, his job is secure.

Matt, what seems to be the issue w/Maze? grades? interest from another team? Is Booth's reputation in Baltimore good enough that he'll be able to work past the bias of the city towards College Park? With the lack of PT for baltimore products Dupree and Gregory, is UMD in trouble w/Baltimore recruiting once again? Thanks.

Gary williams should be very grateful that he has suppoters as loyal as you JUNG. I admire that in a person very much, but sometimes be loyal and being realistic and honest are two seperate things. those baltimore products Dupree and Gregory shouldn't be playing on a good baltimore rec team must less at a Major ACC school. Or should i say Once Major ACC school not any more Jung and not until Gary changes the way he does things will md every be back to where they were or were they should be every year AND that my FRIEND IS IN THE TOP 25 . But you my friend are the ones that will find additional excuses for him and the program next year when they except another road game in the NIT

Jung, the rumors Matt refers to primarily center on questions about whether Maze will qualify academically (one poster suggested we might have another Shane Clark situation). These are unsubstantiated at this point, and I've not heard or seen anything to indicate that Maze does not WANT to be here. However, the apparent commit from Evans means (I think) someone will have to transfer out to make room for both of them to sign. Right now everything seems to be rumor and speculation...we'll know a lot more in a month or so as the semester comes to an end and people sign/transfer officially.

Oh, and RE: Baltimore recruiting, Dupree and Gregory have been disappointing but with a higher-profile guy like Mosley coming next year and Booth on the staff, I think the future of MD recruiting in Bmore is bright.

Jung -- Jeremy's right on with his summary of the situation. Maze definitely wants to come. I'll add to that and say it's probably premature to suggest anything definitively about Maze and academics. I can't say for sure what the UM staff is thinking, but a source from HCC told me today that he hasn't heard anything about Maze not coming. I think it's wait-and-see at this point -- it's possible the Terps have some attrition and a scholarship opens up.

As for Baltimore, I don't think Maryland is in trouble here. They'll win some and lose some. Some coaches like the program, some don't. But I don't think there's any citywide conspiracy against UM. Dupree and Gregory just need a little time. And like Jeremy said, Mosley will be an excellent ambassador.

Come on Bob...

It's one thing to rag on Gary, but to start blasting the kids, tha's uncalled for! Dupree and Gregory had a fairly high national ranking coming out of high school, so don't blame them if Gary sometimes doesn't have a clue about how to handle freshmen.
Just admit nothing that Gary has done or will do will make you happy. You won't be happy until he is gone, if then.

Matt...great work...thanks

Ron please go to Bill ordine lastest blog and reda my posting . Then read what bill ordine said. Ron i am truly a very dedicated terps fan in both basketball and football. I had season tickets for football for many mnay years. You say that i won't be happy uuntil gary williams is gone, that can't be any futher from the truth. All i want is all the excuses to stop and for people to admit that there some negative signs going on with this program. That is all i want. If telling the truth about dupree and gregory is ragging then i am sorry but in all reality they don't belong in the ACC. Gary is so desperate to establish ties back in the baltimore area that he stabbed at these two and made a big big mistake.

Since that's apparently what he wants. Right Bob? Feeling pretty good about yourself because Bill Ordine complimented your enthusiasm? Notice that he didn't actually say he agreed with you.

You constantly fill these Sports blogs with your postings as if people have nothing better to do than read your bitter, self-righteous and yes, "enthusiastic" rantings. You appear to know very little about any of these issues except what aligns with your preconceived ideas (in this case, Gary is a bad coach and can't recruit). I am tempted to make another counter-argument, but since you appear to ignore all facts that don't align with your rantings, I won't waste my time.

And by the way, how dare you point to Gary's EGO when you come in and boast about getting a compliment from another blog post, as if that gives you credibility. Sorry Bob, you have none and you continue to prove that.

Not feeling good about myself at all. Just proving again by your comments that what i said in that posting is true. There is nothing preconceived about anything i said. I again made my point about you Gary Williams Worshipers .No where in that posting did i say that he was a bad coach and that he should be fired again proving that you and others on here only read and interpret what you want. You will go to any lenths to pick up for him and this program even to the point of being in denial ..The last 4 years results prove what i said about this program , about the decline and about where they have finished 3 out of the last 4 years . Yet you made it a point to pick me apart instead of being relistic about the truth. You made me the center of this decline instead of gary and the way he does things, you made me the negative or bitter person just like all the other people that won't reconize that there is a problem. So no i don't feel good about my posting, because as long as there are loyal to the death fans like you on here regardless of the results i won't be happy.
