Bobby Maze

I’ve received more than a few e-mails and comments recently from readers wondering where former Terps commitment Bobby Maze will end up.

I spoke with a source at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College yesterday, and he said that Maze is scheduled to visit St. John’s this weekend. Kentucky and Wichita State have also shown interest. This link from the Wichita (Kan.) Eagle also mentions Cincinnati and Southern Cal as programs that have expressed interest in Maze. Hutchinson coach Ryan Swanson’s phone has “been ringing off the hook,” so it’s safe to say that Maze will find a home.

As for Maryland’s parting of ways with Maze, the source said Maze was disappointed, but not critical of UM’s handling of the situation. Maze is still expected to qualify academically, but he will have to take a few credit hours this summer before his associate’s degree is complete.

He can get into Kentucky but not Maryland? Kentucky, like Carolina and Duke, is the most prestigious baskeball school around. They can pretty well recruit anyone. If they are interested in Maze, Maryland passed up a good one.

I guess I must have missed it, but I did not know that Maze is no longer a Terp. Can anyone explain what happened? I thought the team was counting on him to run the point next year.

Jimmy -- The signing of Tyree Evans last week put Maryland at the NCAA max of 13 scholarships for next year. Barring any additional attrition, the roster for 2008-09 is set. As to why UM chose Evans over Maze, I can't say for sure. I'm guessing it has something to do with their respective academic timelines, but again, I don't know the specifics on Maryland's end.

It's a d*mn shame to lose Maze. All Gary had to do was ask David Neal to leave the team and offer him school scholarship instead. I'd rather have maze play PF spare minutes than D. Neal.

It appears that Maze's academic situation was not solid. My question is why wouldn't the Terps go after Juan Dixon's brother? Jermaine Dixon will play right away at Pitt and he is rated in the Top 10 for JUCO players. Just very odd to me that his name was never really in the UM recruiting mix.

I think if I we Juan Dixon's brother, I would stay away from Maryland because if he doesn't end up as good as Juan was here, he would be deemed a failure.

As far as Bobby Maze if he can't get in to the school academically having an extra scholarship won't help. He may get into school somewhere but it looks like no one will know until after the summer. I don't think the Terps were willing to take a chance and not get anyone if he didn't qualify.

To answer your question, yes, he can get into kentucky, but perhaps not Maryland. Do not be deluded; uk is NOT viewed as anything resembling a "prestigious" academic institution (for proof, just look at the school's #60 public university ranking in U.S. News & World Report.) Maryland, on the other hand, is rated as a Top 20 public university (#17 in USN&WR) with an ascending academic reputation. And, as with duke and many of your other so-called "prestigious" programs, kentucky recruits players who do not otherwise qualify for entrance into the school. Maryland does not provide its recruits either athletic exceptions and/or lower academic entrance standards.

Terp'n Texas.... chill out.

Vols land Maze baby! Hell yea!
