Terps target Echenique off the board

I don’t think I’m alone when I admit that I didn’t see this coming.

St. Benedict’s Prep (N.J.) center Greg Echenique had been weighing scholarship offers from Maryland, Duke, Villanova, Creighton, Notre Dame, Miami and Penn, among others.

But yesterday, the Venezuela native and Newark, N.J. resident committed to the in-state Rutgers Scarlet Knights, according to the Herald (N.J.) News’ Adam Zagoria. Here’s Echenique on his decision, courtesy of Zags Blog:

"By going to St. Benedict's Prep, New Jersey has become a second home to me. I want other players to believe in Rutgers the way I do. What has always impressed me about the RAC and the Rutgers fans is that they love the basketball team and are supportive whatever the circumstances. Coach Hill and his staff and have convinced me and my family that the balance of academics and athletics is a perfect fit for me. In the long run, what convinced me most was not the fact that they play in the Big East or the facilities, but it was the people who make up the program."

Echenique was thought to be a pretty serious Maryland target. He visited College Park and was in the Comcast Center crowd during the Terps’ loss to Clemson earlier this month. Echenique took in a Duke game the next week. So if there’s a silver lining to this recruiting loss, it’s that the Terps won’t be facing Echenique two or three times a year on an opposing ACC roster.

With Echenique gone, all UM eyes can probably turn to National Christian Academy power forward Dante Taylor, who, according to Scout.com, sports offers from Maryland, Pittsburgh, South Florida and USC.

Here’s what Scarlet Knights fans are getting in Echenique:

Whats new , why would you think a top recuirt would go to md. We lose out on most of the really good ones. Listen Gary doesn't have what it takes to close out the really good ones. His own success has made it totally unattractive to sit in a recuirts living room sucking up to the kids parents. Gary is a good coach who brought md back from the dead 19 years ago , but he like so many other coaches who have been at one place to long don't think that they have to change or for that matter want to change. All the good assistant coaches he lost hahn, dickerson. [patos did all his dirty work and for those of you naive fans out there that is the END OF THE STORY>

I love it RUTGERS?!?!? GW has alot of recruiting issues but when a guy picks Rutgers over that lists....it's the kids/parents problem. I think in private, coach K and GW are shaking their heads, probably chuckling at that choice.

Penn doesn't offer scholarships.

Good point. Call it a financial aid package then, not an athletic scholarship.

Most if not all of Maryland's class for next season have at best let's say 'checkered' academic histories...
way to go Maryland

Everybody keeps saying how hard it is to get into md.That is just another excuse for gary williams lack of recuirting ability. His graduation rate is dead last in the Acc. If That is the only excuse as to why he can't blue chip players there then why is it that Brenda Friese consistently get her share of stars away from schools like tenn, conn,LSU much more traditional basketball powers then md. I will tell you why because she is a recuirter and gary williams thinks it is below him to sit in a high school recuirts living room sucking up to his parents. END OF STORY WAKE UP PEOPLE

Gee,Bob,what happened,Gary refuse to shake your hand or give you a position on his assistant coaching staff, seeng how much you know about basketball,or something?Seems like you have a personal ax to grind. And for those of you who think Gary is going anywhere soon, you don't understand College basketball economics that's for sure.He sure gets your panties in a wad doesn't he?

Bob,
You and the others need to stop harping on LAST year. Yep, the Terps didn't finish where we would like.

So now how about thinking about next year? The Terps have 3 recruits coming in- Bobby Maze @ Guard, Gus Gilchrest, a PF/C, and one of the best players in Baltimore, Sean Moseley.

How about talking about them, and the Terps prospects for next year? Complaining about GW is like complaining about the weather- do it all you like, but there's nothing you can do about it.

Bob, I hate to sound like the grammar police but for heaven's sake, please learn to spell "recruit". And would it hurt you to capitalize Hahn, Dickerson, and Patsos (note the spelling on that one too)? Believe it or not, a well written rant carries (and reads) much better than a poorly written and spelled one. Not to mention that you have said the same thing repeatedly now.

No, I am not happy with the recent performance of the team, and yes the head coach has to take responsibility for that. But there is still a lot that I like about Gary and the way he runs his program.

Bob,

Do you cut/paste the same pathetic message from every UM post you respond to? Nice touch using your full name. It kind of clarifies things for the rest of us.

Keep up the good work Ray Ramano. Say hello to your wife Debarah and your brother Robert, won't you. Seriously, good job Matt.

Rob

You know we put up with another coach in this town for a very long time to , with everybody trying to get him fired. His Name was BRIAN BILLICK and guess what happened one day he got his pass pulled. I never once said that gary deserved to get fired or should get fired, what i am trying to make you idiots see is the fact that this program has steadly gone down hill for the past 4 years. All everybody whats to do is talk about last year, If that was the case we wouldn't be having this conversation right now. People we are talking about 3 out of the last 4 years this program has had to settle for the Nit . That is totally unacceptable for a program like maryland. If you don't see the comparison between the men and women's teams between be able to recuirt and not being able to recuirt like brenda friese then i must have been missing something watching this underachieving bunch. Danno wants to talk postive about the incoming recuirts for next year well with the teams track record for bust outs what makes you think that they will be any better off. When have you seen a freshman come into md and have a impact season like other major
schools do.the ANSWER IS NEVER>

He had an offer from Creighton? He should have gone there. They have a sweet stadium and great fan support

Bob,Not only did Gary upset you apparently by not offering you a job, but you must be pretty upset with your English teacher as well. To call us idiots because you seem to feel that you are the only one qualified to notice the falloff in the success of Gary's program is rather sad.Right now the program is in a bit of a down cycle, but with 3 excellent RECRUITS coming in,like many I can see light at the end of the tunnel. As to Brenda ,she has done a great job over the last 4 years. Get back to us after she has been around a while longer , only then can she be evaluated next to a man who has been doing it for 20 years in a much more compeititve recruiting environment.

Gentlemen, you need to off Bob's case. His reasons are valid and unless you're blind and dumb anyone can clearly see that Gary is living in the past and can't contend in the recruiting wars. Look at the number of highly touted Maryland high players that venture off to success everywhere in the USA. U of MD should never let their gardern be picked clean. Gary is not a good recruiter or judge of talent and he simply cannot motivate the average talent he been signing. Lefty may not have ever one the big game but sure could land the big talent.

unfortunately, the past is a harbor of the future in the terps case. even with the class supposedly coming in, and we still dont know if these guys qualify, can anyone predict with certainly, that they work out. look, we have had to go down the juco road a lot lately, is that a sign of good recruiting or lazy recruiting. i imagine some could call maryland the juco center capitol of college basketball. i am sorry, but, the program has sunk steadily since the national title. it is mostly coaching causing it. i also dont think graduation rates help overall with his teams progress. they dont look like a very smart team on the court or it is a lack of coaching.

Bob/Frank

No I'm not blind, dumb or an idiot. Gary is not a great recruiter, never was, never will be. He lets his assistants do most of the work, just like all the other "great coaches". However, Gary has lost about 8 assistants in the last 5/6 years so the recruiting has been very uneven at best.
As to why Gary can't keep the local players, have you ever considered that for many high schoolers, college means a chance to "get away" even if it is only 200/300 miles. Not everyone wants to stay local. Gary did get two of the top ranked local big men last year, but they haven't worked out...yet.
The biggest disappointment this year was Gary's failure to adapt. This year's recruits just couldn't play under Gary's style of play, but Gary never changed to allow these new players to get a little experience. A little zone now and again would have been nice to see.
No I'm not blind, dumb or an idiot. I just don't believe in crucifing someone who isn't there to defend himself.

If we can get Dante Taylor, that will be better. He is 29 in Scout's top 100 and Echenieque is 37.

Hate to do the Bubble-bursting, but folks, UMD has NEVER consistantly recurited the top dogs!! Albert King, Mike Jones aside, Cole and Comcast is filled with NON-NBA type, well-coached, playing-hard, lower top 20 teams. Only two Terps EVER can be considered NBA All-Stars (Stevie Francis and John Lucas...and potentially Len Bias). Yes Blake, Dixon, Keith Booth, Bison Dele, Jasikevicius, Massenburg, McMillen, Joe Smith, Wilcox, Buck, etc have received checks, but no stars. UM was about top 200 recruits playing hard, smart ball and are coachable - names like Branch, Elmore, Shue, Walt, Derrick Lewis, Coleman, Baxter, Mustaf, Manning, Gatlin, Adkins, Ernie Graham, Morley and Rhodes...Not top 100 headcases - Mike Jones, Caner-Medley, Gilchrist etc. Few NBA stars, 1 National Champs, 3 ACC crowns in 88 years of hoops says we are not UNC, Duke, UCLA, Kansas, Kentucky or even G'twon. Get back to being GOOD ENOUGH to be GREAT, Gary and Fans! Amen, Amen, Amen!

Unless my math is wrong in order to sign Bowman from the JC in Kansas this year and Donte Taylor or Spurlock for 2009, the Terps will need to have two players transfer.

Buck Williams not a star?!?! are you kidding me? he had the best, most consistent pro career out of *any* Terp and was a perennial NBA allstar.

Len Elmore was certainly a top 100 player, if not top 20.

Who on the current Terp squad is even a a pro prospect?

Frank i appreciate your support. Listen i have never said that gary should be fired, i get sick and tired of people defending him, when in the good times he got all the glory well deserved mind you, but this hasn't been a 1 year slide fellows this is the last 4 years. If you can't see an alarming trend then i am missing something. If this would have just been last year we wouldn't be having this conversation. As for brenda this isn't just a 4 year wonder She has done her recuirting every place she ever coached. You know gary deserves a great deal for taking a program that was dead 19 years ago to one of the better ones in the country, but he has to take some heat for the downward slide of this program as well. And that is the overall point of what i am trying to say. At what time does it become critical after 7 out of 9 years in the nit or give me a number. I will stand by what i said if this program isn't in the top 25 every year and i mean every year then GARY is not doing his job . End of story and you can make all the excuses that you want..

Looks like the guy pulled a Crystal Langhorne. Is he good enough to make that program worth anything? The highlight reel doesn't compare to some of the top HS stars I've seen.

Hey guys I have read all those comments and there are some good ones, but you have to look at the MD program as a program that has fallen from the championship ranks and ask youself how long will it take to get back. You can say all you want about the people they have had in the past but none of those people can help this program right now. The Men program biggest enemy right now is the womens program. They have been to the dance won it and are on pace to do it again, or at least get very close. Brenda has won a title she is getting top talent, and from listening to what there recruits say after they sign they talk more about the her and her program then just the University of MD. I understand that MD had a lot of problems this year, but i have watched every game this year and I don't know of one game that they could not have won. These players, this team was in every game and for the most part had a lead at some time or another and had a mental break down at one point in the game and lost. There is not one recruit in college basketball that say's I am not going to this school or that school because of the assistant coach, it's because of the head coach, and or his style of play for his team. Gary is a great coach no one on this blog can deny that, but he needs to change his style to fit his team.
