Terps basketball commitment game recaps

Terps point guard commitment Bobby Maze scored 26 points yesterday, while Maze's teammate and potential UM power forward target Ken Bowman had 23 points and 11 rebounds.

But those performances weren’t enough to get Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College a win. The Blue Dragons fell to Coffeyville Community College, 78-74, in the quarterfinals of the Region 6 tournament.

The loss means HCC will miss its 11th straight NJCAA Tournament.

"It's a tough situation. I wasn't prepared for this," Maze told The Hutchinson News. "There aren't too many words to describe it. You have to be in this position to know what's going on, but it's definitely one of the most disappointing things I've had in my 21 years."

• Maryland women’s commitment Dee Liles’ sophomore season for Gulf Coast (Fla.) Community College is still alive.

The Lady Commodores beat Central Florida Community College, 68-45, in the finals of the Region 8 Florida Community College Activities Association tournament. With the win, Gulf Coast (32-1) advances to the NJCAA tournament.

Liles, who was named FCCAA Player of the Year, had 12 points and eight rebounds in the win.

“We just knew we wanted to win this,” Liles told the [Panama City, Fla.] News Herald. “We just settled down we didn’t rush anything. We knew Central Florida was going to come out and get us.

“We had no doubt at all. We knew we was going to win that championship. We knew we had the better team.”
