Hargrave update, other tidbits
Just a few random tidbits from this week …
• The Hargrave Military Academy’s post-grad football team had a successful week, traveling to Moon Township, Pa. and blasting a squad made up of Robert Morris University players, 30-0.
According to Cadets assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Troy Davis, Terp commits Zach Brown and Devonte Campbell both had nice afternoons. Brown (a 6-foot-1, 210-pound linebacker) notched a sack and Campbell (a 6-foot-3, 240-pound tight end) caught a 60-yard touchdown pass.
“I see he’s improving overall,” Davis said of Campbell. “He’s had some things to work on from an on-the-field standpoint. He’s working on some things with blocking. As far as catching the ball, he’s done a wonderful job with that.”
Brown has been solid as well for Hargrave, according to Davis.
“He’s got a lot of upside to him,” Davis said. “Coaches right now are just trying to improve him on his fundamentals.”
As for their recruitments, both were originally members of the 2007 class, but took a post-grad year to get their academic situations in order.
Campbell committed to Maryland last February to much fanfare, while Brown quietly pledged around that time as well – with the full intention of enrolling at Hargrave first.
Both have academic hurdles to clear before they matriculate to College Park, but Davis expects Campbell and Brown to eventually be Terps.
“I can’t say for sure … but I believe if [Brown] qualifies [academically], he’s going to Maryland,” Davis said.
• This is old news for the TerrapinTimes.com message boarders, but yesterday the D.C. Sports Bog broke down a feud on Maryland’s Rivals.com premium message board recently between two posters – one of whom is ESPN anchor and UM alumnus Scott Van Pelt, who posts under his real name.
There’s no recruiting content in the post, but it’s a really interesting take on anonymity, public figures and sports message boards.
• The Key School’s Julian Maldonado missed his senior season of lacrosse due to an injury, but that didn’t stop the class of 2007 standout from getting a chance to play in college.
Per a University of Pennsylvania press release, Maldonado, an attacker/midfielder, is part of the Quakers’ nine-man recruiting class that will make its Penn debut as freshmen this spring.
Maldonado, 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, was a four-year letter winner in lacrosse, basketball and soccer at Key. He led the lacrosse team in scoring in his sophomore and junior seasons.
• It’s a busy week for John Carroll guard Mike Maczko. The 6-foot-5 senior will make unofficial visits to the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Central Connecticut State, Quinnipiac and Princeton. Maczko is one of eight potential Division I prospects for the Patriots.

Matt - did you get a chance to ask if Brown has a written Terp offer?

Corn T,
I asked all sorts of variations of that question, but the best I could get was that one quote.
My read on the situation is that unless there is some MAJOR miscommunication between the staff and Brown, then he's a commit -- provided he takes care of all that academic stuff.
For purposes of this blog, I'll continue to refer to him as a commit, but I've never seen such an "is he or isn't he" situation involving a recruit. I'll speak with the Hargrave coaches again soon and hopefully keep cracking away at this apparent mystery.

Matt - here is the link for the Hargrave game. Click on the date and the article appears. The article, which is probably written by a student, said Campbell's TD was 73 yds. I'll go with your coaches number.

Hmmm that is quite a discrepancy. Not sure which one to believe, quite honestly. Thanks for the link though.
