Poll question: What's next?

Thanks to an unusually long Wednesday (Sean Mosley’s noon press conference + waiting in the office to post the Matt Wieters story until 1:30 am = exhaustion), I’m going to lazily recycle a topic from last week with a new twist.

I asked ‘Recruiting Report’ readers who they most wanted to be Maryland’s second 2008 basketball commitment, and offered a list of Mosley, Chris Turner, Quintrell Thomas and Andre Young.

The poll results overwhelmingly favored a Mosley commitment, so it seems as if readers got their wish.

Now with Mosley on board, Young and Maryland going separate ways and Ralph Sampson emerging as a possibility, a new question must be posed:

How should Maryland handle its current scholarship situation?

Gary Williams and staff could use another scholarship on a 2008 player, or they could bank it and have two to work with for the class of 2009.

Here are the 2008 possibilities:

  • Chris Turner -- Three-star shooting guard from Durham N.C.

  • Ralph Sampson -- Four-star center from Duluth, Ga.

  • Quintrell Thomas -- Four-star power forward from Elizabeth, N.J.

And here are some 2009 kids with Maryland interest:

  • Isaiah Armwood -- Five-star power forward from Montrose Christian

  • Tristin Spurlock -- Four-star small forward from Montrose Christian

  • Maurice Creek -- Four-star shooting guard from Oxon Hill

  • Naji Hibbert -- Four-star shooting guard from DeMatha

  • Wally Judge -- Four-star power forward from Bladensburg

  • Andrew Fitzgerald -- Four-star center from Towson Catholic

  • Terrell Vinson -- Four-star power forward from Montrose Christian

    Hey Matt,
You do a great job. I love the updates and info. What do you know about Kim English and his college choices or choice? I remember reading that he was planning to go to prep school this upcoming year. Is that still his plan? I heard he was very skilled and wonder who's looking at him.

    Thanks

Save it for 2009. The 2009 class is deep. the 2007 class was big enough that we can live without an added freshman next season. We covered the major needs and depth doesn't seem to be a major concern next season. Hold off and hopefully pull in a balanced class that you can groom toward 2011 when the big 2007 class is gone.

They should take Sampson Jr. if they can get him. He looks like he will develop into a big time big man. And Jennings has made it clear he plans to be one and done so they still would probably have 2 scholarships for '09 anyway. If they can't get him then they should bank the scholarship and have as many as 3 for '09.

Will any Scholarships free up? I know we cannot see the future, but will anybody leave early? Not make the Grade? Transfer?

So much Local Talent that we will not be able to recruit them.....with only one or two Scholarships available. I guess that may be the case all the time, we seem to be back into Baltimore again, hopefully we can keep that window open.

bank that baby. we have a solid amout of bigs and guards. you don't want a team of unhappy players because of playing time. with a 2 yr difference players can learn and then play. plus the class of 2009 offer some interesting possiblities. The kid Armwood is a keeper out of the James Gist mold

Bird in the hand. If a talented big man like Ralph Sampson or Quintrell Thomas wants in you take him right now. Even though basketball recruiting is going extremely well right now this is still Maryland where just about anything can go wrong. Take another good 2008 guy and then go all out and land one of the Montrose Christian kids.

If Gary seems to think the roster is solid with the current 2008 recruits, then the Terps should hold on to the scholarship for the 2009 class. There is no point in recruiting a guy like Sampson just to have him sit on the bench for a year behind Burney, Gregory, Walker, Neal, etc. Instead bank on landing two 4-5 star players in 2009 so that the team is consistently being replenished with young talent.

Don't forget Greg Echenique, '09 big from New Jersey. I'm hoping we shut it down for '08 and bring in Echenique and Armwood in '09.
