Friedgen and his assistant coaches

I've been wondering who has the right to hire and fire assistant football coaches -- head coach Ralph Friedgen or athletic director Deborah Yow.

Let's go to the contract language.

Friedgen’s contract gives him a limited right to hire and fire assistants. He can't buck her wishes.

“The coach shall have the right to select and retain nine assistant coaches, subject to the approval of the athletic director,” the contract says.

Not sure what to read into "subject to the approval of the athletic director" but it seems pretty standard.

Depends on the Athletic Director and his/her priorities. It could be anything from a rubber stamp because the AD gives total control to the HFC or it could be a way for a micro-manager to have final control over them.

Depends on whether the AD completely supports the HFC and gives them complete autonomy to hire who they want and pay them accordingly or whether its more important to share department funds proportionally among twenty seven sports and balance the budget.

Has DY always given RF everything he wanted and needed to run the football program his way and give him every opportunity to be successful or did things change when RF needed to hire and pay the assistants he wanted and needed when Taaffe and Blackney left?

Or did RF drop the ball and just make poor choices? Did he get who he really wanted or did DY restrict his choices by limiting the amount of money he could pay the new assistants? Has RF been loyal to a fault to some of his assistants?

I've heard varying stories for the last nine years.

Would love to be a fly on the wall during these meetings and know the truth about their work relationship (as well as that of DY with GW). Seems to me there have been some instances where DY has gotten in the way of her two money makers and restricted their ability to run their programs their way.

Another episode of "As the Turtle Squirms".

I didn't understand why RF went outside the staff to fill the D coordinator position. I thought Seamonsons success in Boise last year would get him a shot at the job. I think the AD may have intervened.

Hey Terps06, the AD gave Ralph $82 million in capital improvements over the last five years - improvements Ralph said he needed to win. Oh and haven't you read Ralph's book, "MY WAY"? I think that says it all - the AD hasn't interfered.. Ralph has made a mess of the program - time for him to man-up and accept responsibility.
